Coral and Environment

Coral islands are known for their natural beauty. However, these islands are endangered. Governments and environmentalists treat this as environmental problem. Large numbers of governments have already banned or restricted excavation in coral islands. This step of governments made it difficult to find gem quality coral.

Coral is becoming rare and rarer. Hence, coral price is growing higher and higher since few years. It is possible that this beautiful gemstone will be scarce in the market and price will shoot up. The stone is becoming a nice tool for investment according to many gem dealers. This has attracted many investors to invest in coral.

There is no difference in rate in both the variety as gemstones can be processed several times in its life cycle. I can not tell anything without seeing the coral.

It is possible that one is original and another one is either fake or treated. fake and treated gemstones fetches much lesser price.

      Hi Jyoti,

recently my astrologer suggested me to buy "Red Coral" of Italian origin. I contacted few of the"Red coral"gemstone dealers, they showed me some "red coral" ranging between Rs, 1200/ to 2200/ All of them were looking very much identical. Later I contacted few gold smiths, they showed me many items and asked me whether you want to buy new one or re-processed one? When I asked the difference between the two, the reply was that both are original of Italy only, but the difference is that "over the period of time this gemstones particularly "red coral's" size gets reduced and they are re-processed and bring back to the required size and again it comes to market for resale".Now, the look wise both were looking very much identical but the difference in the rate is something like Rs.40./per gram (the processed one) and the cost of virgin material is Rs,1200/. to 2200/. per gram. I collected sample of both the variety and approached one more reputed gold smith and placed both material before him. This gentleman indicated the virgin material as the processed one and the processed material as virgin .

I will be very much grateful yo you if you kindly advise me how to assess the gen unity of "Red Coral"

      Kind regards,

      Dear Roychoudhury,

Thanks for comment. The artisan is polishing a ruby rough that is coated with black foreign material. Of course, this gemstone is not coral(in video Shaping gemstones).

I apologize that I do not have any video of coral manufacturing. However, most of the Gemstones are shaped in similar way.
