Recovery from Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery in Costa Rica

Updated on November 16, 2010

Cosmetic surgery recovery suites are providing a much needed service in Costa Rica.

Being able to stay out of the limelight while their bodies heal and having someone available to look after them while recovering after a cosmetic procedure is attracting more and more visitors to the peaceful place we know as Costa Rica. In the past, outpatients were sent home immediately following their plastic surgery to recover in the comfort of their own homes. Depending on what procedure they had done sometimes full recovery could take up to several weeks. Hospitals frowned upon what they considered well patients walking the halls with bandages because it looked unappealing to other patients and visitors. The niche for cosmetic surgery recovery suites was born.

One million tourists vacation in Costa Rica each year. More vacationers have been squeezing in cosmetic surgical and minimally invasive procedures into these. Costa Rica’s world-class medical care and affordable prices have made this possible. Visitors have figured out how to incorporate a good time with a little nip and tuck. Cosmetic surgical procedures require a bit more rest but minimally invasive procedures and dental work could be easily fit in around your eco tours or beach outings.

There is a small Inn in the mountains about twenty minutes away from the International Airport of San Jose, Costa Rica where there is such a place. It caters to the cosmetic surgery clientele and industry. Plastic surgeons recommend it. It is one of the best recovery centers there. It has excellent service and spectacular views. The Inn started off with 16 rooms and last count had 32 in total. It caters to recovering patients and their families. It is very quiet and peaceful, conducive to a no stress relaxed environment to help aid with healing as expeditiously as possible. It is not a resort. You will not find a pool, tennis court nor a lounge here. It is a wellness recovery center. They do have a spa on site to pamper you even further.

All Inclusive Cosmetic Surgery Packages

If you have ever dreamed of having any type of cosmetic procedure done but thought it was too expensive here or embarrassed because people would find out at home, you can have it at a fraction of the cost in Costa Rica without sacrificing service, quality or experience. Thousands of people have been extremely satisfied with the high quality medical and cosmetic care being offered. Plastic Surgeons are extremely professional, the staff friendly and attentive and the hospitals clean and well-equipped, just like in the US. Costa Rica’s cosmetic surgery prices average two thirds less than in the US and Canada, thus making it a popular destination for plastic surgeries and dental work.

At this place they have even designed all inclusive cosmetic surgery packages at relatively low and affordable prices. While they do not include airfare and taxes they do include airport transport, all transportation to and from doctors appointments and follow ups which is invaluable as you don’t have to rent a car or taxi, available 24 hour care after surgery, wireless internet, direct calls to the US and Canada, and three balanced meals a day. Their surgery select packages also include surgeon fees, anesthesia and medications.

All doctors affiliated are specialists in their field with years of experience, many are members of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery. From what I was able to tell while there they have a strong client base of American and European patients. From their website I pulled the following surgery package specials for comparison. The same procedures in the US are much higher and are not all inclusive.

Paradise Cosmetic Inn is pleased to announce special surgery packages

Breast Augmentation – 7 days at Paradise Cosmetic Inn $ 3,800.00

Liposuction – 7 days at Paradise Cosmetic Inn $3,100.00

Tummy Tuck – 12 days at Paradise Cosmetic Inn $ 4,500.00

Breast Reduction – 10 days at Paradise Cosmetic Inn $ 4,100.00

Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) – 8 days at Paradise Cosmetic Inn $ 2,500.00

Rhinoplasty (Nose) – 7 days at Paradise Cosmetic Inn $ 3,300.00

Otoplasty (Ears) – 6 days at Paradise Cosmetic Inn $ 2,400.00

Smart Lipo – 6 days at Paradise Cosmetic Inn $3,500.00

Costs include: surgery, surgeons fee, anesthesia, pre and post op appointments, customary medications, transportation to/from the airport and to/from the surgery and primary doctor’s appointments, meals, nursing assistance. Wireless Internet Access for Laptops, Private Bathrooms, Direct T.V. and Telephones (Complimentary direct U.S. and Canada calls (after 5:00 P.M), High Speed Computer, In-Room safe.

These packages don’t include airfare or taxes. Ft. Lauderdale to Costa Rica airfare has never been more reasonable! Check the fares at the airport Air, as $160 Round Trip

Affordable Dental Care

While I am not inclined to have any voluntary surgical procedures done myself, I did visit a dentist while on vacation there and had my teeth laser whitened. The dental office was modern, clean and as well equipped as any US facility. While here in the United States laser teeth whitening runs over a thousand dollars I paid $150 dollars . It was simple and painless, best of all I was very happy with the results and paid a fraction of the cost it would have cost here.

A few friends needing extensive dental work have also traveled to Costa Rica . I first heard of this from an older gentleman friend that had been quoted $20,000 US dollars to have extensive dental work done here a few years ago. He told me about he would travel to Costa Rica , spend a week there basking in the sun between dental appointments.. When you are talking of saving thousands of dollars it becomes a no brainer. His total cost with airfare and lodging and all the dental work he needed, not at this particular place, was under $4500 total even when you consider he went back a second time for follow up. His was not an elective procedure, he desperately needed the work done. Dentists here are willing to finance, but he still would have had to come up with the down payment. Whatever the case may be, if you happen to be suffering from tooth decay, need crowns, root canals, bridge work, fillings, or just for esthetics, looking to improve your smile with veneers or tooth whitening, you can get a quote through this place. Since I originally went there on vacation and had not scheduled for anything more, the Inn’s front desk handled the appointment for me, took me there, and picked me up to bring me back to the hotel.

As I write this hub another friend with similar dental problems is staying at this Inn. He called yesterday to thank me and my husband for the referral. In his words , it was so tranquil he was about to throw himself down the mountain. They took advantage of the sights and booked a tour to an active volcano in between root canals.

I had the pleasure of meeting a few ladies while staying there too. One was an American correction officer from Michigan and was having her first facelift. The other a German lady having multiple surgeries done. She had a tummy tuck, a facelift and breast implants. I saw her again after her surgeries all bandaged and looking kind of scary and rough but she was doing remarkably well. She admitted being addicted to plastic surgery and described it as the best gift she could give herself. I don’t know about all that, I can think of better gifts to give myself, but I always say - to each their own.

Enjoyed this hub. I didn't realize people combined vacation with cosmetic surgery. This is something to consider in the future. Talk about coming back from a vacation looking amazing!

What a great comment. Thank you for adding to this thread and letting readers knw about your experience with plastic surgery. Good to know Bolivia is comparable to Cosata Rica and seems to have competitive cosmetic curgery packages. Thanks for your post!

      Very good thread!!

I had several procedures done in South America, at MakeoverTravel clinic.

MakeoverTravel is medical organization that provides all inclusive plastic surgery packages with the same services than Paradise Cosmetic but in Bolivia plastic surgery is cheaper than Costa Rica.

For example if you visit makeovertravel's website (www.makeovertravel. com) you can check their price list and they provide the same packages but they are much cheaper and they give you more nights in a 4**** hotel.

Comparing some prices (they all include: surgery, surgeons fee, anesthesia, pre and post op appointments, customary medications, transportation to/from the airport and to/from the surgery and primary doctor’s appointments, meals, nursing assistance… etc.)

      Breast Augmentation – 10 days 4**** hotel $ 3,200.00

      Liposuction – 10 days 4**** hotel from $1,900.00

      Tummy Tuck – 10 days 4**** hotel $ 2,700.00

      Breast Reduction – 10 days 4**** hotel $ 3,200.00

      Facelift – 10 days 4**** hotel $ 2,990.00

      Rhinoplasty (Nose) – 10 days 4**** hotel $ 2,200.00

      Porcelain crown $ 350.00

      Dental Implants $ 700.00

So Bolivia is 30% cheaper than Costa Rica.

I did at Makeovertravel the following procedures:

      - rhinopalsty

      - breast augmentation with silicone implants

      - Liposuction

      - Buttock augmentation with fat injection

      - 14 days in a 4**** hotel

      - Transportation

      - bilingual assistant

      I paid $7,000.00.

I asked a quote in Costa Rica,, they quoted me 11,000$,, in the US they quoted me $30,000.00!!! :-)

So I did a great deal and I am very happy with my outcomes.

If I had to, or wanted to get plastic surgery done again, I would definitely do it again at MakeoverTravel. I could not believe how fast I recovered, I admit, it was very uncomfortable the first week…but obviously with any surgery there will be some discomfort. I don’t know what kind of technique my surgeons used but whatever it is… it’s working very well because my whole experience was great!!

I think we could all use a little nip and tuck here and there, lol but would you really subject yourself to it? I wish I was braver!

There is much more to Costa Rica than affordable cosmetic surgery. If you are serious about visiting you might want to check out my other hub Retiring in Costa Rica: My Honest Travel Review. Costa Rica is a great country with reasonable fees for everything under the sun. Hope you get to visit sometime.

Even though going "under the knife" scares the death out of me, due to horrific stories told by others, in the future I might just check out Costa Rica. Makes you definitely think about how much we are being "over-charged" in the US, thats for sure. Thank you for an informative Hub! :)

You are welcome Maddison. Costa Rica really is a great alternative for cosmetic surgeries and the cost so much more reasonable. Good Luck!

Wow, thanks for the dental tip! We have no insurance at present and this would save us a great deal. I have Costa Rica on my list to visit anyway. Appreciate it!
