How I Cured My Seborrheic Dermatitis Acne
My Review of Unblemish
This is a post I have been absolutely dreading. Who in their right mind would post super zitty pictures for the world to see?!? Apparently, I would, because if there is just one person out there
Let's rewind to just before the Holidays last year. It was about a month and a half after my wedding (I will never be more thankful for this fact), and I was getting ready for my husband's office holiday party. Now, thanks to the liver-killing Accutane I was on in high school, my face is usually 99% clear. Not this weekend! I had about 3 huge, deep "friends" on my chin. At the time, I thought it was just really awful timing, put a ton of makeup on them, and off we went to party.
Let's take a look at the Before and Afters...(I'm cringing as I'm pasting in the 'Befores'). These were all taken roughly at the same time at night after a shower. I am not wearing makeup in any of these pictures. The first picture is without anything on my face. The last two are after applying all 4 Unblemish products.
Not only did they decide to stay, but my face got worse....a lot worse, and I finally scheduled an appointment with my dermatologist. Not to fear, she said! I was diagnosed with seborrheic dermatitis. She explained no one really knows why this happens, but it's really easy to fix. Perfect!!!! I was given a prescription for a face wash and gels and was told it should clear up in about 2 weeks.
Wrong! Two weeks later, there was literally no change. That's when I decided to play doctor. I tried oils, washing my face more, not touching my skin, ridding my house of all things sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate, etc., etc. At one point I had this genius breakthrough and realized it must be the metal on the zipper of my jacket that was touching either side of my chin, so I started wearing scarves to block them from my skin. In February, we left for our honeymoon in Costa Rica, and I was certain the sun and warm air would clear it right up. Nope! Nothing helped. I mean, NOTHING!
Nothing quite describes being 34 and having the skin of a 14 year old hormonal mess of a teen. The stress, the anxiety; it was awful! I had seen a friend from high school post pictures of products by Rodan + Fields (the Proactiv doctors) that were helping people get rid of wrinkles, age spots, redness, and, of course, acne. I tried Proactiv when I was younger, and the only thing it did was bleach my clothes, but when you're as desperate as I was, you'll try anything! I contacted her, ordered the Unblemish regimen, and very anxiously waited for the delivery.
I started noticing a difference in 2 weeks. The spots were definitely getting smaller, and I wasn't having any new breakouts. About 1.5 months after I started, my face was almost completely clear!!! I know everyone always says "I was a huge skeptic, but...", but seriously, that's what happened. I still have my monthly hormonal struggles, but I finally feel confident walking around without makeup on again! I am, and will always try the all-natural way first, but when those don't work, sometimes you have to bring out the big boys. This stuff worked (very quickly) for me. Period.
As much as I love this regimen, I do have 2 cons that everyone should be aware of:
1. It contains benzoyl peroxide, so it may still bleach your clothes. I have found that putting it on immediately after the shower, then doing my hair/makeup, then waiting to put my clothes on just before I leave the house in the morning stops any chance of bleaching. You're just giving the cream a chance to dry.
2. While my acne cleared up, I did notice tiny, darker clogged pores. I'm not sure why this happened, but for me, it is worth it for how much better my overall skin looks.
If you know anyone who is going through something similar, please, PLEASE share this with them! No one should have to walk around like this, but more importantly, no one should have to feel as insecure as adult acne can make you feel. Please message me if you have any questions!
