Developing your own personal style

Updated on May 9, 2014

In her own words...

“Lock up your libraries if you like; but there is no gate, no lock, no bolt that you can set upon the freedom of my mind.”
Virginia Woolf, A Room of One's Own

Create who you want to be

So many times, I think we get caught up in "Trends" and really kind of fail to develop our own personal style. Now, personal style can mean many things to many people. To me, it's how I feel about myself when I walk out the door. Do I feel confident? Am I comfortable? Do I question my fashion choices? Notice I don't ask myself, "What will other people think?" I'm over and done with those potentially negative thoughts. Some people may think I look great and some may not. What other people think is none of my business!!!

When you think good about yourself, you feel good and when you feel good, you look good. It's a fact. You can put a pretty dress on an unhappy woman and she still looks unattractive.

Feeling good about yourself and creating who you want to be has to begin with positive internal dialogue. Admit your mistakes when you make them but don't beat the hell out of yourself. Always tell yourself good things about you! Believe it or not, after a while, you will begin to live up to the very things you have told yourself. That is a huge part of creating who you want to be. Your personal style will occur naturally during this wondrous process, merely as the result of your own happiness and confidence.

When you think about personal style, think about tactile things that really speak to you. Make a list of 10 of these things for yourself. For me, below are my 10 things that I absolutely love that have become a big part of my personal style.

1. Black and neutral colors.

2. Wedge heels, because they're comfortable!

3. Hombre hair (I like the best of both worlds!)

4. Citrus fragrances

5. A smoky eye

6. Silver jewelry with blue topaz or turquoise stones

7. A black or pinstripe fedora

8. A nice, golden tan. Just a bit. Not too dark. Just healthy. I use Publix brand self tanner.

9. Mood lip gloss. It goes on clear and then pinks up a bit. Looks healthy & natural.

10. Metallic white painted nails or a French manicure. Makes you hands and feet look neat and tidy all the time.

There are so many more things that I like, too many to list them all here but I can honestly say that most of these things are dailies for me. If you know what makes you feel good, you will never be bored. I never feel like I'm wearing the same things over and over.

Just take the time to think about all the things that make you feel good....a certain color, a certain smell, a texture, the way something feels. Use these things to create your list. Try these things out for a week and I promise you will find yourself happy, confident, less preoccupied with yourself and how you look but yet people will compliment you continuously on how great you look, because you are happy. Remember, this is for you, from you.

Give yourself this gift of personal style by creating who you want to be, who you truly are!

Because you're HAPPY!

Remember always what I said about positive internal dialogue. Tell yourself good things and you WILL live up to your own expectations!

Just be you

You are unique in your own special way. Flaunt your quirks! It's o.k. Really. Own it. Respect it. Love it.

Personal style, find yours

Journal

Get inspired by compiling a fashion journal with photos of things that you love, that speak to you. Take photos of things you like while out shopping and add those to your journal. Use photos and cut outs to experiment with putting different ensembles together. Try putting things together that might not traditionally go together.

Our own royalty

As the First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama has the greatest sense of style that we've seen since Jackie O. Her wardrobe choices are definitely spot on but it's that winning smile, happiness that really makes her shine. She is a lovely combination of intelligence, beauty, athleticism and warmth. She really is United States royalty. A great style inspiration.
