Does Frequently Washing Your Hair Damage It?
I would like to know whether your hair can really get damaged when you frequently wash it. I am a 24-year-old woman who washes her hair every day with shampoo while bathing. I read somewhere that when you frequently wash your hair, you make it prone to breakage and you can even suffer hair loss as a result of that. Is it true that frequent washing of the hair is damaging to the hair? If washing my hair every day is not good for my hair, then how often should I wash my hair?
Too much washing of the hair is not the best
As strange as it might sound, it is totally true that the average person increases their risk of damaging their hair when they frequently wash it or wash it too much. This might come as big surprise to many people – especially the clean freaks out there. But you should know that the more a person washes their hair, the higher the risk of them getting their hair damaged. Some of you might be wondering how frequent washing of the hair can be damaging to the hair and what our definition of frequent washing of the hair or too much washing of the hair is. When you wash your hair frequently, you are basically washing it every day. This is simply what too much washing of the hair means. And according to experts, this isn't the best for you.
Why washing your hair too much damages your hair
Hair specialists all over the world often advise people against too much washing of the hair because of how unhealthy it can be for the hair. The average person uses water and shampoo or soap whenever they are washing their hair. Now, excessively using these two things on your hair can be damaging to the hair.
Some readers might be surprised to hear that too much water isn't good for the health of the hair. I am serious when I say too much water isn’t really your hair’s best friend. According to experts, when water gets into contact with your hair, it causes the shaft of the hair to get swollen and produce hairs that are prone to breakage. In addition to this, wet hair is more prone to damage than dry hair is. This is the reason why when you comb or brush your wet hair after bathing, you notice a lot of breakages and hairs falling out than when you comb or brush your dry hair. The longer you hair remains wet, the more prone to breakage it becomes. This is the damaging role that too much water on your hair plays.
Remember that water is good for your hair, but too much of it isn’t really the best thing for your hair.
The damaging effects of too much shampoo and soap on your hair
The biggest danger to the hair with regards to washing it too much is the type of shampoo or soap that is used during the washing process. What does shampoo do to the hair? Since majority of us normally wash our hair with shampoo, it’s imperative that we know that shampoo can easily get rid of the natural oil (sebum) that the hair produces, thereby leaving the hair dried out. Oil is good for the hair since it protects both the hair and the scalp. Getting rid of the natural oil on your scalp and hair is bad news for your hair. It makes your hair dry and not looking very good. The drier your hair is, the more prone it becomes to breakage. And that is what happens when you frequently wash your hair with certain types of shampoos.
Also, in washing the hair, some people worsen things by using harsh shampoos or shampoos that contain strong chemicals and ingredients that are not good for the hair. You should always try your best to avoid using shampoos that contain the chemicals parabens and sulfate. For example, the reason why shampoos that contain sulfate are bad for the hair is because the chemical sulfate weakens the follicles of the hair - especially when used for a prolongedamount of time. When your hair follicles and strands are weak, your hair becomes prone to breakage. This is the reason why I advise you to always go in for shampoos that are totally sulfate-free.
Below are some of the best shampoos that you can use to wash your hair. These shampoos are mild and contain ingredients that are good in tackling hair loss and promoting healthy hair growth. On top of all this, these shampoos are free of harmful chemicals. Try these great sulfate-free shampoos because they are some of the best on the market:
So how often should we wash our hair if we can’t wash it every day?
One thing all hair specialists seem to agree on is the fact that washing the hair on a daily basis is a bad idea. If washing the hair every day is bad for the health of the hair, then how often should we really wash our hair? According to these experts, the average person should wash his or her hair at least once every two to three days. But people with dry hair or people who don’t have much oil in their hair can wash much less frequently than people with oily hair.
While it is totally true that washing the hair every day isn’t the best thing for the average person to do, you should also know that it is not advisable to go for a long period of time without washing your hair. Experts say that it is not advisable to go for more than 14 days without washing your hair since that can cause hair loss. Hair that is left unwashed for a very long period of time will be dirty and so will the scalp. A dirty hair and scalp increases your chances of getting infections which can end up damaging your hair and causing hair loss.
