Dog Tag Symbolism And Meanings

Dog tags are worn by military personnel for a variety of different reasons. The dog tag identifies the wearer and a variety of different associations, such as blood type and religious preference. Commonly, dog tags are used to identify the dead and wounded. Dog tags can save the lives of these brave men and women based on the information that is provided on the tags. The U.S. Military requires everyone to wear two dog tags. If a soldier is deceased, one dog tag is collected and one is left with the body, if war prevents the body to be left.

Although not known as dog tags, identification tags have been used in throughout history. Australia, Canada, China, Finland, and dozens of other countries have identification tags for their military. Not only does dog tags provide an identity, they can hold deep symbolic value. It doesn't get any more personal then the value of the dog tag with the wearer.

Identification tags were used as early as the Civil War. In 1863, General George Meade's troops wrote their names and unit information on paper tags, which were pinned to their clothing. Soldiers began to make identification tags out of anything that they could use, such as wood. Tied with a string, they would where this prized possession around their neck. In 1899, the first official identification tag was issued and became mandatory in 1913.

Dog tags can be very symbolic to the wearer and all of those associated to the soldier. At this time, we'd like to thank all men and women for their service. Every single one of you shows great bravery and courage in all that you do. May God watch over all loved ones that made the ultimate sacrifice. Watch over their family and friends, comforting their heart and soul. Amen
