Easy and effective homemade hair treatments

Updated on May 27, 2015

Your hair can be the source of pride and great despair. Somebody is blessed with shiny and naturally thick while others are constantly fighting the battle with dull, greasy and tangled hair. The solutions for this can be many and very often quite expensive. Or, you can use natural ingredients from your fridge and prepare an all natural hair mask that will cost you just a few dollars (or even cents).

Here are some simple recipes for hair masks you can prepare by yourself.

The lemon mask
This is a really simple hair mask. Lemon is known for its degreasing properties and this mask will make your hair all shiny and nice. Take 2 lemons and squeeze them. Massage the lemon juice into your scalp and leave it on for about 20 minutes. Wash your hair. The lemon acts as an antiseptic and improves the circulation of your scalp.

The dandelion-apple mask
Using a mixer, blend 1 tablespoon of dandelion root, 1 sliced apple and 1 small cup of water. Now add 3 tablespoons of green clay and the juice of 1 lemon. Blend the mixture until the mask is homogeneous. Apply the mask and keep it on for some 60 minutes. Wash the hair with a mild shampoo.

Olive oil and honey mask
Here is another simple mask using olive oil and honey. Olive oil gives your hair the needed moisture while honey adds shine to your hair. This mask is prepared by mixing olive oil and honey in equal parts. Apply the mask starting from the ends and finishing on the scalp. Then cover your head with a plastic wrap and a warm towel on top. Leave the mask on for about 30 minutes. Shampoo thoroughly and rinse well. This mask can be used once a week.

The avocado hair mask
This mask is prepared by mixing 1 mashed ripe avocado with 1 tablespoon of honey and 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Apply the mixture to the hair and leave it on for 20 minutes. Wash the hair using a gentle shampoo.

The banana - almond oil mask
Another really simple recipe: just blend 1 ripe banana and few drops of almond oil. Massage the mask into the hair and leave it on for 30 minutes. Wash it away with a mild shampoo.

The papaya mask
This is a mask that is ideal for split ends. Remove the skin and seeds from a ripe papaya and then blend it. Add a cup of yogurt. Apply the mask on the hair and leave it on for about 30 minutes. Wash it using a mild shampoo.

The parsley mask
The mask is made using parsley root. Take 3 tablespoons of parsley root and add 3 tablespoons of castor oil. Mix the two and apply the mask while massaging the scalp. Leave it on for 15 minutes and then wash it thoroughly. Use this mask once a week.

The thyme rinse
This is not a hair mask but a rinse that can help you get rid of dandruff. The rinse is prepared by boiling 7 tablespoons of dried thyme in 2 cups of water for 10 minutes. When the rinse is cool pour it over clean and wet hair. Massage it into the scalp and leave it on. Do not rinse it.
