What's so Good About Facial Cleansing Brushes?

If you are thinking about getting a battery operated face brush but are not sure which one you should choose or what the real benefits are, I'm going to give you a clearer picture so you can make an informed decision.

In the past years their popularity has exploded and is a favorite beauty gadget for consumers and even skin care professionals. Their mission is to leave the skin amazingly clean by getting rid of skin's impurities and reveal a smoother and better complexion.

The problem is that there are many brands available and this makes our choice more difficult. Among the best well known brands we find Clarisonic, which carries an expensive price tag, and more affordable brands such as Olay or Sonic. So, the question is... which one?

The main benefits of using this type of cleansing brushes include:

1- Thoroughly cleansed skin
2- Gentle exfoliation
3- Clearer skin
4- Smoother and glowing complexion
5- Reduce pore size & blackheads
6- Ability to clear away make-up residues, oil and dirt
7- Increased blood circulation
8- Leave the skin ready for hydration
9- Better absorption of skin care products

7 Tips on Buying and Using your Cleansing Brush

When buying and using a cleansing brush there are few things you should take into account for maximum benefits.

1- Buying a brush that is right for your skin type is important. Most brushes are for all skin types but if your skin is sensitive go for one with a gentle brush that won't irritate the skin. Also some brands incorporate a brush head for sensitive skin so look out for that.

2- Some people use their brush every day but this can be too harsh on the skin, depending on your skin type. Sometimes less is more and I would recommend watching how your skin reacts after using the brush. Overusing your facial brush can have adverse reactions for the skin such as irritation, redness or broken capillaries. It is recommended to use it at night to get rid of make up residues and debris. Discover what work best for your skin and adjust its use accordingly. If you find that is too harsh for your skin use it every other day or just twice per week.

3- Is also important to use the right skin care cleanser with your brush. Some brushes come with their own lotion included when you buy it the first time. If there is no lotion with your brush look out for one that is gentle on the skin, hydrating cleansers give very good results. You don't want to get one with exfoliating action because the brush itself acts as an exfoliating tool and it will be too strong for the skin.

4- Breaking out when starting using this toll is not uncommon because the dead skin cells that are being shed can clog the pores but this will normalize as the pores clear out and the skin gets just to it. If you experience this problem it can take from 2 weeks to 1 month to clear the skin. If you find that you have blackheads, open pores or uneven skin focus more on those problematic areas.

Some people find that this tool helps with their acne but if you are thinking to buy one for acne issues do your research first. Some skin care experts recommend using it for acne problems but the key is to make sure you are using a brush with soft bristles and that you careful massage the area avoiding going over inflamed zits. Don't overuse the brush as this could irritate the skin.

5- I prefer cleansing brushes with rotating heads over those that only vibrate because I find them easier to use and slide over the skin. Just apply the cleanser and leave the rotating head do all the "dirty" work.

6- It is essential to maintain your brush really clean. Wash it with soap and water every time after use. To get rid of the bacteria cleanse it with an anti-bacterial soap or with alcohol.

7- It is not a good idea to share your facial brush with a family member or friends, so say no if someone ask you, no matter how nice they ask!

Although there are many facial cleansing brushes on the market most of them work in similar ways and the main difference is the price. I have decided to review 2 popular and affordable facial brushes for those who want to try one but don't want to spend a small fortune.

Two Affordable Top Rated Facial Cleansing Brushes

1- Olay Pro-X Advanced Cleansing System

It is claimed that the Olay advance cleansing system is as good as the more expensive brands and many reviews I have read back this claim. It was designed by a team of dermatologists to cleanse the skin six times better.

1- Two speed rotating system. The slower speed is used for daily cleansing and the faster speed is used for gentle exfoliation.

2- Water resistant which means it can be used in the shower.

3- Replaceable brush head with soft bristles.

4- Cleanser to exfoliate the skin. I'm not a big fan of using exfoliating products with a facial brush as this can, sometimes, be too harsh for the skin. See how your skin reacts and if you think is too strong for your skin type switch to a more gentle cleanser.

5- It works with batteries (included in the kit: 2 AA Duracell batteries)

It can be used on the face and other parts of the body such as legs, hands, décolletage & neck.

How to Use it

Just dampen your skin and the brush head with a bit of water, apply the product on the area you want to cleanse or in the head brush. After turning on the brush massage over the area for about one minute and rinse with water. Be careful not to go too close to the eye area.

Don't forget to cleanse the brush every time after use with anti-bacterial products or alcohol. Remember that a dirty brush can spread bacteria and do more harm than good.

You will know is time to replace the heads when they become worn down, approximately every 2 or 3 months.

Is the Olay Pro-X Advanced Cleansing System for you?

Many reviews claim that there are not big differences between this brush and the more expensive ones and the majority of consumers are happy with the results. The main benefits obtained for those who have used this brush are:

1- Improved skin texture
2- Glowing skin
3- Smaller pores
4- Fewer blackheads
5- Healthier skin

Other benefits include:

  • Smaller than other brushes which this makes it easier to hold and pack when traveling.
  • Affordable
  • Long lasting battery

On the other hand there are consumers that are not as happy, and the biggest complains they have about this product are:

1- Not as powerful as more expensive brands such as the Clarisonic.
2- Leaves the skin irritated.
3- The battery compartment is hard to open.

If you are still undecided on whether to buy this product or not I will say that if you don't want to spend a great amount of cash to give the Olay brush a go. Try it first, and see how your skin looks and feels. Give it time to work and if you decide that this is not the brush for you return it and get your money back.

2- ToiletTree Facial Cleansing Brush

The manufacturer claims that this cleansing tool will help improve problems on the skin such as large pores, lines and wrinkles, grease, blackheads and dry patches. The main features are:

1- Water resistant brush and straps.
2- Rotating heads
3- Four heads with specific actions.
4- The heads include 2 for the face, normal & sensitive skin, 1 for the body and 1 pumice stone.
5- One speed
6- Battery operated (4 AA batteries, included).

How to Use It

Dampen your skin and the head of the brush, apply the cleanser and gently massage the brush over the area for one minute, avoiding the eye area. Rinse with water.

Even the manufacturer states that you can use the brush daily, keep an eye on how your skin reacts and if you find it to harsh, reduce its use to every other day or even twice a week for very sensitive skin types.

Replace the heads every 2 or 3 months and cleanse the heads daily with an anti-bacterial solution or alcohol to avoid the spread of germs.

Is the ToiletTree Facial Cleansing Brush for You?

I have to say that I have been reading lots of reviews about this specific brush and although most of them are positive, it has negative reviews too.

What’s good?

Besides all the great skin benefits that come with this brush there are other positive points:

1- Competitive price.
2- Great choices of three brushes and a pumice stone attachment.
3- Good and comfortable size to hold and use.
4- It comes with a string so you can hang it in your shower or on a hook.
5- Long lasting battery
6- Great customer service. You know a company has a top notch customer service when the president of the company himself is getting in touch with unhappy customers, answering all their questions and doing his best to solve their problems.

What's not so good?

After reading many reviews these are the biggest complains I have found:

1- Some users found that it has little power.
2- It could do with more than just 1 speed.
3- Some found this cleansing brush too abrasive while others found the bristles too soft.
4- It stopped working for no apparent reason.

Bottom Line?

The ToiletTree cleansing brush is reasonable priced, perfect for those who don't have the money to invest on a more expensive model or simply refuse to pay big money for a face cleansing brush. For what I have been reading the company stands behind the product and if you decide to buy it and want to return it for whatever reason they will send you a replacement or give you a refund.
