Fashion Tips: What To Wear and What Not To Wear

Updated on February 15, 2013

Lately, fashion seems to be one of the concerns circulating throughout the minds of young women and men. Not only has fashion made an impression on the youth of today's society but it seems to also have made an imprint on the children as well. Fashion can be seen as a way to express yourself creatively, show off your originality, and make tons of money while looking absolutely fabulous. The ideas of what to wear and what not to wear are shown all of the time on t.v., in magazines, or on billboards and posters. The whole idea behind fashion is that it is forever changing due to the demand of the consumers, the ideas of the designers, and the overall expectation of the consumers wanting something new, different, and unique. The worst thing that someone can do in fashion is wear the wrong outfit, at the wrong time. Therefore, in the minds of most fashion will always be changing for the better and will always remain timeless. In the next few paragraphs or so, I will list ideas or what to wear, when to wear it, and what not to wear.

The main thing to remember about fashion is to always remain true to yourself. Whatever outfit or clothes you decide to wear should always express who you are or how you are evolving as a human being. The picture above is of an outfit that you can wear whether it is in the fall or in the winter. The lights colors with a touch of brown shows off an easy breezy look that you might want to go for. The style of this ensemble shows off sophistication and class with an edge of sass. The outfit gives off a fun vible with a lot of personality with the light blue and brown colors. This outfit can be worn to a gathering with friends, to a movie theatre, or on a date with an associate.

In case you were going to go out on a hot date or spend a romantic night with someone you love, the outfit above would be a perfect choice. It is elegant and sultry not too short to be considered a clubbing outfit but not too long to be considered for a more formal occasion. The shoes that go along with the necklace show off the beauty of the dress and really accomplish the goal of complementing the dress. The overall shape of your body for this dress can be just about any shape as long as you don't have too much of a muffin top that might make you look too overstuffed in this dress or unflattering of the sorts. The side ponytail and the lipstick also help for this look to be even more seductive and well put together. The overall ensemble of this outfit is a win win to impress or to keep yourself looking nice at all times. This type of dress can be worn during the summer time or pre-fall season. Also, this look can even be worn in the wintertime if you would like or if you have to appropiate coat that goes along with this look.

In the picture above, you see nice green pants and a black and white striped cropped shirt with strapped black wedges and brown satchel. This look is a perfect look to be casual or to dress yourself in while you're in the house with nothing more to do. The style of stripes are always in and very fashion depending on how they are designed and how you dress them. The best way of using stripes is to keep it simple and chic while still maintaining that fun vibe that the green pants bring to the entire outfit. This look can be for all sizes and for anyone of a particular age. If you are a plus size person then the best route would be to wear the the cropped shirt a little longer than you would wear it normally and to wear green pants that are comfortable instead of the regular green pants pictured above in order to avoid being uncomfortable. Elongating the shirt really helps to cover up any unflattering parts of your body that you don't want to be seen by anyone else. The green pants in this outfit help to bring in a form of color for those who love color and really like to wear it but don't necessarily know what to wear it with. Instead of choosing a colored shirt to go along with these pants, I would recommend a striped shirt of course or a polka dot shirt or even a white long sleeved shirt that will complete this look. This way you will look professional and always ready to go out if you receive an unexpected call from friends or family.

In the picture above there are two women dressed in two black jumpsuits of different styles. The first black jumpsuit is strapless and has more flare at the bottom paired off with tan heels, whereas the second one has a v neck and short sleeves paired off with black heels and pockets. This outfit is perfect for the spring or for the summer. It is cool, casual, and simple enough to draw looks for any and everyone. This look can be pulled off by women of all sizes. It gives off such sophistication and such a polished look. It doesn't matter how big or small you are, as long as you have the confidence and the right attitude, I'm sure the only thing people will notice is how good you look in this outfit. The best thing about this outfit is that you can have some or no make up depending on the look that you want to give off to others. This outfit can be worn with a black belt or a colored belt as long as there are nice colored heels to go along with the outfit instead of black pumps to avoid being too matchy matchy. Your hairstyle for this look can be in a high bun, straight, curly, or even wavy.

The picture above is of a fun polka dotted dress with four buttons on it. This dress can be worn in the summer time or right before the fall season starts. It is a great outfit for a picnic, a trip to the zoo, or even a walk through the park. It can be worn in many styles, whether it be long sleeved or short sleeved or strapless or spaghetti strapped. The polka dot style itself can be used in shirts or skirts that come to the knee of course or earrings or fun little bows that go into your hair. Polka dots can be expressed in many ways such as accessories that will surely get you a compliment from one of your friends. The hairstyle choice for a polka dot dress of course should be either wavy or curly to give off that pretty and fun look. The make up for this outfit should be little to none to really show off the natural beauty of your face and to avoid using too much makeup that might be a little too unflattering for this look. The shoes for this look should be either wedges or flats because heels could really look give this look a total thumbs down by making the outfit and yourself looking a little bit out of place.

The picture above really shows of a style of its own. In both pictures there seems to be black strapped wedges. Although, in one picture there are leopard shorts and a long sleeved top and in the other picture there are striped shorts with a short sleeved top. Both of these looks are two separate styles that could be interpreted as playful and fun or casual and sleek. This outfit can be worn in the summer time. I would suggest that this outfit should be worn out to lunch, shopping with friends, or for a fun time on the beach minus the heels or wedges of course. The colors that you could match with leopard shorts are dark colors not too bright to take away too much attention from the shorts. The tops that could be worn with the striped shorts are with light colors that aren't too dark or overbearing.

One of the best pieces of advice I would give is to not I repeat not wear mixed matched clothes. The picture above is just a complete mess of trying to class too many colors and stripes together all at once. I would understand the outfit more if it even looked a little bit more fashionable. Okay, I lied, this outfit is just atrocious. The patterns mixed with stripes or the bright colored dress with high stacked wedges is just wrong wrong wrong. Not because of the fashion rules in general but because it is not flattering or an attention getter that might attract people to give you a compliment or for you yourself to feel good about how you look. I do not see this as high fashion or even fashion at all. The only people that could pull off this look are celebrities mainly because they are see as people who are rich and powerful and there is always some idiot out there who would find this look absolutely gorgeous on them because of their status. No No No I refuse try your hardest to avoid too many clashing colors or patterns that don't make up an outfit as a cohesive whole.

In the picture above there are females wearing bright colors whether it is in dress form or skirt form. Bright colors are fine but I feel as if too many bright colors in one outfit is overdueing it and should be avoided. For example, If I were to wear a bright green shirt with pink straight legged jeans and yellow heels,I would look like a really good painting gone wrong. Overdueing it on brightly colored clothes is very distracting and will attract attention that you don't want from people wondering what on earth you have on. If you are to wear bright colors, I would say to wear them in the summer or the fall at best. The hairstyle for this look should be in a high bun to help you to look more polished.

The above picture not only breaks the fashion rules but it is absolutely disgusting. For a woman to show off her body in this form is only going to gain her attention from one type of men or dirty looks from women. The whole point of a woman's body is to dress it up with class and showcase off the curves and shape. This dress does nothing to the woman's body but to leave out any mystery that it should give off. It is strapless and gives too much for a man or woman to look at. This outfit can't be worn out to eat, to the movies, shopping or anything like that. If this outfit were to even be worn at all which I hope that it wouldn't be, would most certainly be worn by a celebrity since they feel as if they can sometimes pull off these sort of looks. I personally feel as if you are putting yourself in a bad position to be laughed at, scoffed, and treated unladylike.

I strongly suggest as a woman or a male for you not to wear overly baggy clothes. Yes, I understand every once in a while with that straight legged colored jean or pattern print you would like to wear it with a white long sleeved sheer top. Okay that is fine and all. I mean as in don't wear overly baggy clothes that don't show off your shape or the curves of your body. As far as a man goes, don't wear clothes that are going to make you look as if you don't care about yourself or your overall well being. The darkness of the baggy clothes just makes it look even more dreadful and tacky more than before. The main thing as humans that we notice about each other are how we dress or a first impression of someone when we meet them for the first time. It is always to make a good first impression, you never know when you might run into someone new.

All in all, as long as you remain true to yourself, your own personal style will show through by the clothes you where and the hygiene that you uphold. If you feel as if your own personal style is different than the tips that I have given you then go for it. Even though others might not agree at first, there is someone who will like the way that you look simply because you are being yourself. If your trying to copy styles that you see about then you aren't being true to yourself but you're just going along with what is hot. The best way to utilize any new style that is being thrown out is to add your own little twist or style to it to make it your own. If you are a plus size woman I would say to avoid wearing overly tight dresses or skirts and to wear colors such as black and brown to hide any muffin tops. There is always a right outfit for every occasion as long as you dress accordingly.

Well, styles have certainly changed over the years. That model in the last set of pics with the little hat reminds me of something I can't quite place my finger on. Very interesting to see different points of view on styles. I agree that the sheer cut out dress is like a scream for attention. We were always told that horizontal stripes made a person look wider than vertical ones. Times change, don't they? Quite interesting.

@moonlake I don't think that age should determine whether you are old or not. The way you feel on the inside and the way that you dress accordingly to the way you are shaped helps you to be youthful and fun; showing off your personality to others and also helping yourself to feel better about who you are as a person.

Went clothes shopping today found nothing. It all looks so old looking. I know I'm old but I don't want to wear the things I saw today. Enjoyed your hub. Voted up.

@donnah75 i also enjoying watching fashion shows and having some knowledge on what is in and what is not. I feel like you are able to pull off florals as long as when you wear it, it doesn't remind you of your grandma or make you feel as if your a lot older than what you actually are. You just have to find that floral print that fits you and is styles a way that expresses who you are. also, with the mixed patterns i would say the same thing as long as it hides any unflattering parts and shows off your curves.

Great hub. I enjoy watching the fashion shows and trends, but I only buy in when it reflects who I am, as you advised. Apparently florals are in, but I don't know if I can pull it off without feeling like my grandmother. Mixing patterns is in too, but like you stated, I don't get it. Fun read...voted up
