Men Or Women's Knit Hat

Whether it's your first project or your just looking for an easy knit hat, then this is the one. It is great practice for the beginner or even for the experienced knitter its easy to whip up for a gift or to knit for charity..( Homeless shelters are great place to donate these warm hats).

This is a really good project to make for the men in your life, but the women will love it too. It will be the perfect hat for them either way. In fact you could make one for every member of your family as I have. You will need to adjust the size accordingly. Especially if for a child, you may want to try this pattern: Free Pattern For A Child's Hat

Its easy to knit, thick and warm, keeping the head as well as the ears nice and warm, although it looks small it is stretches nicely, I have found it to fit even the biggest head.

I would suggest you use a machine washable worsted weight yarn... Like a super wash wool..You will want something, that can be thrown in the washer and will not felt....Some people that do not knit or crochet will forget and just throw it in the washer and dryer...OH HORROR! for the owner as well as the creator of such beautiful handy work.

USEFUL TIP: When giving away any item that I have knit or crocheted, I always write down the washing instructions or include the label from the ball of yarn.

THE BASICS: If you are a beginner and this is a first project for you, then it will be helpful to know that one of knitting's greatest assets is its straightforward simplicity. Two stitches (knit and purl) plus casting on, increasing and decreasing, are all the basic techniques needed to complete most elementary projects. Once you've mastered these techniques, you are on you're way to knitting expertise.

The pattern is free and you will find the instructions below..enjoy

Lets Get Started

Machine washable worsted weight yarn

Gauge: 24 or 28 stitches = 4 inches in K2, P2 rib stitch.

Needles: Use whatever size needle you need to get gauge. The 4 mm – 5.5 mm range

For circulars, use a small circumference, 12" to 16".

I used a a 16" circular No.8 US (5.0mm)

I Knitted first on a Circular Needle, and then switched over to Double pointed needles when I started the crown.

If you prefer you can do the entire hat on Double Pointed Needles.

Loosely cast on 96 stitches. Join work, being careful that the stitches are not twisted. Place a marker, and work in K2 P2 ribbing until work measures 9.5 inches .

To Shape crown:

To the shape the crown we will begin to decrease as follows: When you find the hat getting too small to work on the circular needle, switch to double pointed needles.

Round 1: K2, P2tog to end of round. 72 stitches remain.

Round 2: K2 P1

Round 3: K2tog, P1 to end of round. 48 stitches remain.

Round 4: K1, P1

Round 5: K2tog to end of round. 24 stitches remain.

Round 6: Knit

Round 7: K2tog to end of round. 12 stitches remain.

Round 8: Knit

Round 9: K2tog to end of round. 6 stitches remain.

Cut yarn, leaving a 6-inch length. With a tapestry or a yarn needle, thread the yarn

through the remaining 6 stitches and pull tight. Weave in the ends.
