Gray Hair Hairstyles and Looking Fabulous

Updated on September 20, 2011

Having Gray Hair is Cool

It used to be that when women started getting gray hairs it meant that they were too old to be attractive. Women are refusing to think that way anymore and it's about time. There are so many accomplished older women that they have blown the stereotype of gray haired women as marginal players to smithereens.

Let's take a look at some fabulous women who have accepted going gray and do nothing to hide it. And their gray hair hasn't slowed them down, they continue to make great contibutions and are acknowledged leaders in their field. They continue to take care of themselves and their gray hair by sporting haircuts and hairstyles that make them look gorgeous. In fact they look so good that some of the younger fashionistas have caught on and are sporting fake gray locks themselves! Who'd have thunk it?

Celebrities Who Proudly Show Off their Gray Mane

It used to be that Hollywood wasn't kind to older women with their gray hair and relegated them to minor character roles. But with more older women as executives, directors, producers in their midst, there have been more flexibility. You can never get rid of the aura of the starlet in Hollywood because it always needs new blood, but now there are some fabulous older women with gray hair who are still busy.

Jaime Lee Curtis was best known as a scream queen for her role in Halloween. However she has become a versatile actor. Not only has she taken roles in comedy and drama, but she's also taken action roles as well. She has been the ingenue, the sexy prostitute, the brave wife, and the fun Mom. Once her hair had grown gray, she made no attempts to hide it preferring a natural look, and Hollywood still likes her and keeps giving her roles.

Diane Keaton used to be a Hollywood starlet in her breakout role in Woody Allen's Annie Hall but she has had a diverse career in front of the cameras and now makes high grossing movies behind the camera. She still acts but most people now think of her as a director as well. Her beautiful coiffed gray hair hasn't slowed her down at all.

The modeling world used to only feature the skinniest young women on photographs and the runway. But as the population gets older, there has been more demand for mature models. Who says you can't have long hair when it turns gray? Certainly not Yasmina Rossi with her beautiful long silvery locks, she is still being photographed and she is still being hired as a model.

Eileen Fisher is known for designing casual clothes with natural fabrics and wearable styles. And for that, women buy her clothes and love wearing them because they feel comfortable and they look beautiful. Fisher knows that style can be all about the essentials and reducing the excess and it reflects on her hairstyle. The classic pageboy will always make you look polished, even in silver gray hair.

Folk singer, Emmylou Harris, still keeps on rocking and has a loyal following attending her concerts. Women have looked up to her before because of her songs and way of singing, now women also look up to her for her long singing career and because she still continues to look the natural beauty.

Gray Hair is so Trendy

Young women are starting to look at these and many other accomplished older women with their gorgeous gray locks and want to look that way too. In fact for young Hollywood, sporting gray hair is very trendy. Here is Kelly Osbourne, Ruby Rose, Pink, and Pixie Geldof with gray hair coloring and edgy styles. And Lady Gaga sporting long gray hair on the cover of Vanity Fair is startling.

Gray hair is no longer a source of shame and being relegated to the margins of society. It is just another hair color. So if you see a gray hair, don't get depressed, don't think that your life is over, don't think that you're old. Gray is just another color. Picking the right hair style for you is still what's important and having gray hair doesn't mean you stop living and stop looking good.

I like having hair, so a buzz cut is not for me. I have had short short hair and people thought I was gay, lol. I have gay friends so don't go there. I am not gay, I want to attract the guys.

If my hair would ever get around to turning more gray, I would let it go. Does it hurt your hair to color it gray like bleaching does? Where do you go to get gray colors, I can't find any here.

This is a great hub that says a lot about how us Baby Boomers are aging. It's humorous though that one of your ads on this Hub is for a product that is said to reverse Gray Hair. I love mine.

Hi grandma's house, I'm wondering if they are coming out with some new shades of gray hair color, because the color's so popular now.

Thanks kimh039 for the info. I might be able to use it for a later hub.

I think since I'm blonde that I'm going white vs gray, but it's kinda nice to see young people experimenting with gray - if for no other reason than to see what they'll look like in it! I use a shampoo called So Silver that I get from Great Clips that helps keep the brassiness out of blonde and gray hair that builds up from chemicals in the water that can make light hair look dull. Thought I'd pass that along if anyone wants to get a shinier look without coloring. Thanks for the interesting info here, Flightkeeper. I enjoyed the pictures too.

Lot's of people look wonderful in grey hair but there are some of us that just look - well - like a sea hag. I'd love to let my colour go natural but it just looks bad with my warm skin tones. Good article! Now if they would just come out with shades of grey hair colour so we could ease the transition from colour to natural or pick one that works with skin tone!
