Grizzly Long Hair Feather Extensions

Updated on May 17, 2013

Hair Feather Extensions - the Latest Rage in Hair Design!

Hair feather extensions have become the hottest new rage in hair design. Being a leftover hippie from the 60's, this newest craze not only sparked my attention but attracted the artist in me. So much so that I bought my sister-in-law a do-it-yourself hair feather extension kit so she could not only do my hair but start "feathering" all of our friends and families hair too (she is the designated hair color/stylist/artist among our family) I haven't taken the plunge yet (only because I have a very important meeting to attend this month and have to appear very "proper"), but once my meeting is done all the stops are being pulled. I'm not only going to have feather extensions put in my hair but I've also opted to do some fading color in my hair to do something really "different:" (The artist in me is just begging for some more color)

How to do your own Feather Hair Extensions

What Way Would You Like Your Feathers??

I bought my grizzly hair feather extension kit on EBay. It comes with some longer grizzly hair feathers (these are the ones with the pretty "grizzly" pattern in them) The kit also came with smaller brightly colored feathers of different types (feathers can be from a multitude of birds including emu, ostrich and roosters among many others) The hair feather extension kit also comes with beads for crimping the feathers into your hair, a pair of small pliers to do the crimping, a tool to thread the hair into the bead - and even some bonus hair "tinsel" to thread into my hair if I want (the hair tinsel is man made - imagine Christmas colored tinsel but very very thin - adds a nice little burst of color to your hair) I have included links to EBay products here for the various types of feathers and feather extensions kits available to you.

Besides the hair feather extension kits for the do-it-yourself-er, you can also buy feathers in lots, singly, with or without clips (temporary hair feather extensions that you just clip in) And if you absolutely don't want to do-it-yourself, many hair salons offer hair feather extension services. Just call your local beauty salons and ask if they do hair feather extensions. They will probably know what you are talking about and if not, keep searching. Hair feather extensions are so popular this summer that many salons are now starting to do them.

So How Do You Sport Feathers in Your Hair?

Basically what you do is choose some small strands of your hair, thread them into the threader and put your hair feather extensions in - then use the crimping bead to hold your feathers in place. The hair extensions can last 2 weeks to 3 months, depending on how aggressive you are with your hair. You can wash, blow-dry, straighten and reuse your hair feathers. They are very fine and silky so they blend right in with your hair. The crimping bead is small and you can even get the beads in matching hair colors if you want to make sure the bead does not show. My kit came with different colors of crimping beads.

The feather hair clip on extensions are self-explanatory. You can use the clip on hair feather extensions if you just want to jazz up your hair for the day, don't want to wear them to work - or you like to change the colors of your feathers frequently. I personally like the idea of them being in my hair for a few weeks, so I'm opting for the more long lasting feather extensions.

Hair feathers have become so popular that even celebrities like Steve Tyler and Jennifer Love Hewitt are starting to sport their own feathered look. As hair feathers catch on even more, you will see more and more people wearing them. Any type of hair can have a hair feather extension installed. I've even seen some very nice extensions on women with short hair. You can choose feathers that blend in with your hair (for a more subtle look) - or you can dress up your hair with feathers in reds, purples or dramatic black (some grizzly feathers come naturally black - when you order your feathers you can picked dyed, natural or synthetic) I am going to go with a somewhat subtle look with some long grizzlies, a little splash of color with some smaller feathers (probably teal or greenish blue) and my hair color will fade from one color to another as it heads down my back (I have long hair and I'm going to have a friend that's a colorist do that part)

Soon I will be posting my own pics with my own feathered look - I'm really looking forward to it and have a feeling that I will be using hair feather extensions for months, if not years. I am always up for trying something new - and hair feather extensions look like alot of fun!!

@Robin) lol it looks like even the little ones are into this newest hair rage. How cute! I absolutely think you could do these feather extensions yourself. I'd like to see pics of your daughters feathers. I plan on using the kit at the beginning of Oct. after my "meeting". I'll be posting pics of how my feathers look.

Feathers in the hair are all the rage right now with the girls in our community. Even our three year old wanted a feather! I wish I had read your Hub before I spent the money to have the feathers put in my girls' hair; your do it yourself way is much cheaper! They love their feathers but they are just one color and were about $20 a piece with the girl putting them in. I'm sure I could have done it myself. I think I'll buy the kit from eBay to add more! Thanks, Dorsi!

Thanks Mike for stopping by and reading. I guess there is such a shortage of feathers now that they are making synthetic grizzly feathers. I also heard that the fly fishing companies are also short now on the feathers they use for lures. Who would have thought...lol???
