Guide to Crochet Baby Booties

Updated on October 30, 2012

Crochet baby booties are one of the cutest handmade products! All baby booties are pretty cute, of course, but there’s just something really special about the work and care that goes into the handcrafting of crochet baby booties. Whether you make them yourself or buy them from someone who crochets this is definitely something you’ll want to have for your own baby (or give as a gift to someone with a new baby in the family!)

Why Crochet Baby Booties?

If you aren’t a crocheter yourself (yet?!) then you may be wondering why you would take the time to crochet baby booties instead of just getting regular baby booties from the store. Here are some of the things that make crochet baby booties so great:

o Handcrafted items are always special. The love that goes into a handmade item is what makes these items so incredibly special. They are treasured for that reason alone.

o This is a crocheted gift that can be saved over time. There are many different crochet baby items including crochet baby hats and crochet baby blankets. However, those tend to be used for a long period of time by the baby and get kind of messed up in the process. That’s great because they are functional but it’s also nice to have a handmade item that can be treasured over time. Crochet baby boots are never worn for long because the baby’s feet grow so fast and they aren’t really damaged because the baby isn’t walking on them yet. This means they can be enjoyed while they still fit and then set aside as an heirloom item to be saved and adored. Who doesn’t keep their baby’s small first set of booties?!

o Crochet baby booties are unique. Parents who are ready for their kids to start showing a cool sense of style can start with a handmade pair of crochet baby booties!

Where to Buy Crochet Baby Booties

If you don’t want to crochet baby booties yourself but you do want to celebrate this great craft buy purchasing a pair of handmade booties then you’re in luck because there are a lot of different places where you can buy these items.

If you know someone who crochets then you can always ask him or her if it would be possible to commission a pair of baby booties. Even if they don’t want to do it they may know another crocheter who does. This is a great way to get a truly custom item without having to make it yourself. Pay your friend fairly for their work.

Some other great places to buy crochet baby booties include:

o Etsy. This online hot spot for purchasing handmade items is a great place to find a diverse range of different crochet baby booties. Some items are already made and ready for sale whereas others can be customized and purchased on demand. Shop around here!

o eBay. Because of the fact that crochet baby booties tend to be a fairly durable item that isn’t worn by a baby for long there are some people who do opt to sell theirs online when they’re done with them. Because of that eBay sometimes has good deals on secondhand crochet baby booties.

o Various online baby stores. There are stores online that do sell baby products and sometimes have these in the mix. You can use Google’s shopping search engine to find them. One example is Quilts Just 4 Kids.

o Local boutique baby stores. You shouldn’t neglect the possibility that there may be local stores in your area that accept commissioned items from crocheters including crochet baby booties.

A note on buying crochet baby booties from big name stores:

Crochet is an art that must be done by hand. As a result, if you find a pair of super inexpensive crochet baby booties in a big store that is selling multiples of the same item then you may want to question who did the work. Some people in foreign countries do get exploited for their handmade crochet work so you should take the time to find out where such items came from! That said, there are a lot of great crochet baby booties out there that come from legitimate sources where crafters are paid fair wages for their work.

I love your crochet articles. I have never learned this art, but I must. I knitted big squares for an afghan and now I need to crochet the pieces together but I don't know how. :(
