Hairstyles and Hair for Bald Women

Updated on January 27, 2013

There are types of women who are bald, those who had undergone chemotherapy-- (radiation treatment), those who have major illness or those who had just chosen to be bald for fashion purposes. For women who are bald because of some illnesses, they can still accessorize to accentuate some features specially their facial features. For those who have chosen to be bald as fashion statement, this is not a problem, they like their bald head, so they are comfortable with it.

There are also various hairstyle (as you may call it) even for those who are bald because of treatment or loss of hair due to various reasons. The important thing is to have the aura and confidence that goes with a bald hairstyle specially for women. I can see that for women who had chosen to be bald it is a courageous act as society expects women to have hair, preferably longer one, and having a short hair is a form of being "different".

I will first discuss some reasons behind hair loss:

Both men and women can have problem regarding hair loss. There are several reasons why we suffer from hair loss and for discussion purposes I will share what I researched about it. According to researches conducted and observations it is due to these reasons stated below:

  • Deficiency of major nutrients like protein and Iron
  • Some body cells are inactive due to some illness for example thyroid problems
  • Because of some illness or infections -- or as a result of radiation -- Chemotherapy treatment (but hair loss will return after radiology treatment)
  • Exposure to poisons in the environment
  • patchy hair loss--maybe caused by ringworm
  • dandruff--scaling of the scalp where in it mostly occurs with children

Another term for a certain type pf hair loss is “alopecia areata” and this terms simply means hair loss in the underlying skin of the hair and the cause of this one is unknown. Usually the other "patch" will be bald and the next spot will follow.

If you are dealing with hair loss and you are not undergoing radiation treatment, here are some steps to do to grow your hair:

  • Apply Minoxidil --- this has been known to stop hair loss, just apply it topically to scalp, but once the application is stopped the hair loss continues too.
  • Transplants -- this one involves moving hair plugs from areas where hair grows exist and then putting them in the bald spots. The results are permanent although it is risky and very expensive too.
  • Aloe vera shampoos or the juice of it are proven to induce growth of hair too. Just apply the juice topically in your scalp regularly and use Aloe Vera shampoo. I like the natural Aloe Vera stems which you can buy from Asian stores, and I apply it regularly in my scalp to replenish hair loss.
  • There are lots of hair grower products available in the market but be careful and read the labels because they damage also hair follicles

It has been said that hair will grow after it sheds through, but then if you have some major illness, this may cause the derailment of growth specially if you are under stress and then your body needs also new cells for the hair growth. This may cause shedding of hair and it will take time to regrow it.

Bald women and their hairstyles:

  • You can put a scarf on your head with a style, make the color of the scarf the same as your clothes or have a contrast. Black bandanna is always beautiful and goes with different color of clothings. You can actually learn the steps and art of putting scarf in your head when you look at the video here.
  • You can also use hat with different sizes, choose a hat that goes with the style of your clothes and color too,
  • Use wigs if you like, just choose the color which is okay with you, black is basic or brown or blond depending in your original color of your hair
  • Or just carry it bald -- for those who are into radiation treatment, sometimes this can be a traumatic experience specially if they are use to having long hair etc, but for those who just wanted to be bald and make them as fashion statement, they just flaunt it and carry it because they like to be bald in the first place.
  • You can also use earrings, necklaces and other accessories to accentuate your face.
  • You can also use wigs and just choose a hair wig that is not so noticeable and avoid those which looks fake like wigs which are colored.

I have to tell you you are incorrect in one area, when you say that hair will return after radiation treatment. I had a form of bone cancer in my skull which was treated in 2007 with radiation. The hair will never grow back in that one large spot on my head where the cancer was. Please don't tell people I have ringworm :-(

What a kind and caring art-ticle for women who have been forced to show far more skin then they like on their heads, You offer many alternative looks for them, most of which enhance their beauty, although I am not turned off by a woman who has a bald is the eyes that are magnets to me, not hair follicles. great HUb~~~~MFB III

Hi Amy, I applaud you for other woman wouldn't like to be bald, and for you thinking that you need to restore your hair and going bald. of course being beautiful isn't only hair, those things we feel are the most important ones, you are beautiful and the feel is the most important ones, Thank you dear, Maita

My head is shaved purely by choice. My hair was very damaged from coloring too much, so I decided to shave it off and start over. The first time was scary for me, but now I like the simplicity a shaved head offers. I have been a slave to my hair for a good 25 years, and I needed a break. I thought I'd grow it back immediately, but I may never grow it back now. I have never know such freedom. There are no more bad hair days, hairspray, curling irons, flat irons, hair color, or hours spent trying to make my hair "perfect." Women need to know they have choices. Hair does not make a woman beautiful. Be proud of your head, and know there are plenty of people who find women with shaven and bald heads beautiful!

Nioxin shampoo prmotes hair growth in a major way. I believe it was orginially designed for chemotherapy patients but I use it just to get my hair to grow faster within a couple of months i had NEW hair growing along my hairline. I have been using it for approx 8 years and swear by it. My ex husband who HAD a receding hair line even loves it. you can feel it working on your scalp, its a tingling sensation it just feels great!

Yes, society and we as part of society should be more accepting too, I am just thinking that long hair in tropical and warmer countries must ne a sacrifuce but they can be used to it too, people should be used to seeing bald women so that they will become a norm specially for those who don't have a choice but to become bald too,

      Thank you Cheeky, Maita

Hi Rev, I agree with you 100 percent, society has got to accept it and then it will be a norm, beauty is skin deep or hair deep hehe, the truth is we become a society that is always on the look for the physical beauty, beauty from inside is always and should be what we are after to,

Thanks Rev as usual you comments are nice, Bless, Maita

Yes Truth, it could be a real issue for women and it is good always to know that there are people who don't look at those bald women differently specially those who are bald not by choice, Thanks Truth, Maita

Hi ehern, yes some features accentuate bald womens features too, but for some who doesn't have a choice they go bald but then they also look beautiful specially when they talk, my point is that beauty comes from within not form being bald or what,

Thank you ehern always for dropping by, I hope you feel really better now, Maita

Hi mystihorizon, oh that is sad for your friend, it is my opinion that it is the people around who should just understand and try to comfort people who don't have a choice but to be bald, as I have said it can be a traumatic experience also, your friend is lucky to have friends who are supporting her too.

And yes also, even if there are women who are bald, they can still look beautiful, they just have to accentuate their features more or help with accessories, it helps, but then at times who cares about looking good outside, inside is more beautiful

Thanks so much mysti for droppng by here and sharing your experience, I appreciate it very much, Maita

Hi BK, toxic dyes and perms, oh those substances, I always thought they could be harmful, yes, I touched on alopecia but then I need also to learn more about it, will go and look for your hub about this same topic, thank you always, Maita

Hi hello, thanks for your comments and Have a good day, Maita

Hi Dohn, yes for some and women being bald is inevitable too, but at least it is good to know that they can stil accentuate it, I mean even if you are bald by choice or not, you can still become beautiful, thank you Dohn,

I agree with you too that most men wouldn't like a bald woman by choice, but wearing a wig is always an option too,

This is a great hub, Maita! Some women have no choice due to baldness but can look really good. In warm countries, its easy to go without it. Hair can be a drag, its true we get so hung up about it. Men suffer terribly, and more when they fight it. Society is getting more used to the truths about baldness.

This is a wonderful hub and I am glad to see it. When men begin to lose their hair, many are opting to go bald and it appears to be acceptable to society. It is not so acceptable for women who society wants to have hair. It is sad that we are a culture that is so focused on our own definition of outward beauty, that we miss the real beauty.

I think that if more woman, by choice or necessity, go bald, society will become accustomed to the look and begin to appreciate it. Wouldn't that be a tremendous gift to the next generation of women?

      Thanks Maita

I guess features play a great role in how you look bald. Some women are just beautiful even without hair. But the thing is, if from sockness or not, they must keep their self esteem high so a compliment goes a long way.

I have an excellent female friend who has Hyper-thyroidism and she has no hair anywhere on her body and chooses to wear wigs, (which are expensive for the decent ones, and then they only last about 6 months before they need replacing).

This is a great hub to make people realise just how hard it can be for women who lose their hair for whatever reasons and to let them know they can still look good.

In her past my friend experienced a lot of cruelty from men who laughed at her once they got "close" enough to find out the truth, and as a result her self-confidence has really suffered even though she is now in her late 30's. She even attempted suicide when she was much younger as well as self harming.

I can't begin to imagine what this must feel like for a woman, and my friend is the closest I can get to understanding. Fortunately when she visits us she feels totally comfortable about taking off her wig and relaxing knowing we don't treat her any differently and never will.

I was surprised - when I wrote a hub about hair loss - that so many women responded with hair loss issues. There were so many issues including alopecia - and one often overlooked - the use of toxic dyes and perms.

      I like the scarf ideas!

I like the fact that you mentioned that baldness in woman is not by choice (as with men) as it well could've been caused by chemotherapy. To be honest, I don't know any guys that like a woman with a bald head, but I'm sure that there are some out there that do!

I think that you should do one on wigs, Maita. What do you think?
