Home Remedies for Hair Loss and Hair Growth without Chemicals
The problem of hair loss and thin hair is very common among the people of all ages.
Mostly the hair growth of the scalp stops after reaching a length of 2-3 feet due to the vitalization loss of hair follicles. Exceptions of the unusual length of hair growth appear due to the abnormalities in hair development.
Hair loss occurs both in men and women. In the normal hair growth cycle, everyone sheds about 100 hairs each day, but the excess of it is a distressing development. In women, the hair loss occurs on the top of the head or temples while men lose hair on their temples. Men are more likely than women to go completely bald.
The people often find themselves at loss to have proper hairstyle due to thin hair. In the US about $3.5 billion each year is spent to stop hair fall.
It may occur due to several reasons. The chief among them is the hormone imbalance, deficiency of nutrients in the diet, negligence to take proper care of the hair, pollution, sunburn chemical changes in the body, use of synthetic shampoos, dyes, hair oils, etc.
Structure of Hair and hair Loss
The hair is made of a protein called keratin and the loss of it causes hair fall and grey hair. There are several reasons for the loss of production of keratin in the body including age, heredity, diet, improper care, stress, etc.
The hair follicle holds each hair into the skin. The base of the hair follicle is formed by the hair bulb in which the living cells divide and grow to build the hair shaft. The blood vessels nourish the cells in the hair bulb and deliver hormones for the growth and structure of the hair at different stages in life.
The hair loss may be due to a loss in the functionality of a pseudogene which helps in the production of keratin.

It supports growth and reverses common forms of hair loss. But there is no evidence that it works for everyone and can stop hair loss due to chemotherapy, drugs or chronic hair pulling.
This remedy is safer and causes no side effects.
The effectiveness of rosemary depends on the causes of hair loss.
1. Alopecia Areata
A research in 1998 was conducted for the effects of aromatherapy using rosemary oil on people with hair loss due to autoimmune disorder or Alopecia. Here 44% of participants improved within 6 months.
2. Genetic Hair Loss
A study in 2013 proved that the rosemary oil caused hair growth of mice in testosterone-related hair loss. It was theorized that the oil prevents DHT from binding to hormone receptors that enable it to attack the hair follicles.
It can neutralize the effects of DHT and can prevent the genetic hair loss too. DHT or Di-hydro-testosterone is an androgen that gives male characteristics. It miniaturizes hair follicles and contributes to male pattern baldness (MPB).
3. Better than Medications
A 2015 study proved that in DHT-related hair loss, both rosemary oil and minoxidil (a popular hair regrowth treatment) caused equal hair growth in 6 months.
It proved that rosemary oil promotes hair growth in the long term. It is better than growth medications which cause allergies and skin irritation. Minoxidil often causes scalp-itching.
4. Scalp Health
A study in 2016 found that it led to blood circulation and skin health in rats. So it can prevent the hair loss by improving the health of hair and scalp.
5. Scalp Infection
Another study in 2017 found that rosemary oil may kill some fungi and bacteria and helps in hair loss is due to infection or unhealthy scalp.
6. Other Types
A small research finds that rosemary oil also reverses other forms of hair loss.
Preparation of Rosemary Concentrate
Steep a handful or two of dried rosemary leaves to a liter of boiled distilled water for 5 to 6 hours. Longer steeping gives higher concentrations.
Count the number of hairs in a small region to check the progress of slow growth.
The care and repetition of use are needed, as the results appear after several months.
How to Use
Apply the diluted oil directly on the scalp.
Add one part of oil to 4 parts of liquid soap.
Add 10-12 drops of rosemary oil to a shampoo, and wash daily.
Dilute a drop or two of rosemary oil in a carrier oil, and leave overnight for better effects.
Perform a patch test.
Keep it out of the reach of children.
It should not get into the eyes and mouth.
It is not safe in all concentrations or for all people.
There is no research that it could replace standard treatments.
The safety to use it alongside Minoxidil or other drugs is not certain.
Avoid use during pregnancy and breast-feeding except under medical advice.
There is no evidence that it works for childhood hair loss or it is safe on their scalps.
15. Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse
Vinegar is being used since ages to flavor and preserve food, heal the wounds, and clean the surfaces. Hippocrates (460-337 BC) acclaimed it for infections, ulcers, and sores. The Romans used it for hair shine and dandruff.
It helps in hair loss causing scalp conditions, including flaking, dandruff, and psoriasis.
Apple cider vinegar and hair growth
The rinsing of hair with apple cider vinegar helps in hair growth. Though a little research testifies it. But the benefits are reported and one can give it a try.
It stimulates the hair growth by increasing the blood flow in the scalp.
It cleans the product buildup left by the styling creams or shampoos, and thereby unclogs the hair follicles to remove dandruff.
Its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties combat yeast and irritation. It also removes the build-up of dead skin cells, flakes, and itching.
Balances pH levels
The alkalinity of shampoo causes hair friction, breakage, dryness, and hair loss.
An ideal pH of hair lies between 4 and 5 and the vinegar balances this level to make the hair smooth, strong, and shiny.
Cuticles and Curls
The acidity of vinegar makes the hair cuticle smooth. It removes knots and tangles, and reduces the frizz of lifted cuticles, thereby enabling the hair to reflect light in a better way to attain a glossy and healthy glow.
The shampoos and conditioners weigh down individual hair strands, while vinegar rinse aerates the curly hair and gives a bouncy look.
Prepare a mixture of 2 to 4 tablespoons of vinegar in 500 ml water. Wash the hair with shampoo and rinse. To avoid eye contact with vinegar, tip back the wet head. Pour the mixture over the entire scalp, leave it for 2-3 minutes and then rinse off.
Vinegar should not be used on wounds.
Adverse reactions to excessive consumption are rare.
Hypokalemia or low potassium in blood was reported on daily consumption of about 250 ml vinegar for 6 years.
The low pH of the mixture may irritate the skin and damage the delicate outer hair cells of the ear.
16. Use Hair Pack or Rose Water in Summer
Don’t keep the oil applied on hair in summer as the oil itself is sticky and the stickiness increases with sweating, which causes hair loss. So it is better to apply the oil at night and wash the hair in the morning. Wash the hair twice a day in case of excessive sweating in summer.
The weekly use of a hair pack reduces the stickiness of the hair caused by sweating. Strawberry, milk or orange juice could be added to the hair pack.
The stickiness and dandruff caused by sweating could also be removed by washing the hair with rose water once a week.
Diet and Other Remedies for Hair Loss
It is better to focus on the diet to increase the regrowth of hair. here are few drinks and eatables that are known to boost the hair growth

Refrigerate the mixture in a covered glass bowl. By using a wooden ladle, take one tablespoon, half an hour before each meal thrice a day.
2. Orange Peels
The intake of a tablespoon of dry powder of orange peels with water twice a day replenishes the need of required nutrients in the body needed for the growth of hair.
The orange peels could be boiled in sugar and refrigerated for further use.
3. Armenian cucumber or snake melon
The regular intake of Armenian cucumber or snake melon increases the growth and length of the hair. It contains silicon and sulfur, which help to increase the length of the hair.
Regularly washing the hair with the water or juice of snake cucumber is also beneficial for the growth of the hair. It also delays the process of hair loss.
The intake of cabbage is very beneficial for the hair. The juice of cabbage replenishes the need of sulfur to the hair and thereby helps in hair loss by strengthening the hair. The vitamin and silicons in cabbage help in the growth of new hair.
Benefits of Hair Plucking- A New Research
A research team led by Prof. Cheng-Ming Chong, of the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California, found that individually plucking hairs from the back of a mouse led to the regeneration of hairs. These findings were published in the journal “Cell”.
They discovered that the damaged hair follicles induced hair regeneration in the surrounding areas.
To test this theory and the team plucked 200 hairs from the back of a mouse in several different patterns and found that,
- Plucking the hairs from an area more than 6 mm in diameter did not regenerate new hairs.
- Plucking hairs from a region 3-5 mm in diameter, however, led to the regeneration of 450 to 1,300 new hairs.
- The new hairs even grew outside of the plucked area.
- The stimulation of hair follicle by hair plucking may lead to new hair growth.
- Hair plucking triggers 'distress signals' to encourage new hair growth.
- The research may lead to potential new targets for treating alopecia.
Through molecular studies, the researchers found that the growth of new hair was due to a process called "quorum sensing".
How it Works
In simple words, the plucking damages the hair follicles. This damage triggers the release of inflammatory proteins. Then these proteins send a call of "distress signal" to the immune cells to rush to the site of the injury. The immune cells activate signaling molecules, like tumor necrosis factor-alpha or TNF-α.
These molecules at certain concentrations encourage both damaged and undamaged hair follicles to produce new hair.
Prof. Chuong senses wide implications in these findings. It is possible that minor damage to organs could also stimulate some regeneration. A parallel process may also exist in the physiological or pathogenic processes of other organs, though not as easily observed as in hair regeneration."
But it has not been confirmed that plucking could be effective for human.
In the future, the pathway may be followed with some cream or injection?
Till then try plucking a few hairs here and there until you become totally bald.
Avoid Stress to Stop the Hair Loss
Stress is another reason for hair loss and grey hair. The signs of stress appear on hair and skin. During the stress, the body releases the hormones in which work goes against the overall system of growth and repair of the body and the hair is no exception.
So it is advisable to avoid stress, cultivate happiness, and have a positive outlook.
