Home Remedies for Teeth Whitening - How to Whiten Teeth for Free

Updated on December 21, 2016

Most movie stars, celebrities and models these days all appear to have flawlessly white teeth making the rest of us all strive for similar perfection. In many instances famous people end up paying dental practitioners hundreds of dollars to whiten their teeth or put on a bonding agent over their teeth. Some celebrities have a jaw filled with capped teeth, whilst some undertake other sorts of dental whitening treatments. The harsh truth is that this all works out to be an really expensive bill and these are procedures that demand a great deal of maintenance.

Here are some very affordable alternatives you can try to help whiten your smile!

Home Remedies for Teeth Whitening

Here are several home remedies for teeth whitening.

If you try any, let me know in a comment how you get on!

  • Mix equal amounts of lemon juice and salt to form a paste. Apply this to yellowing spots on teeth, its said to be one of the most effective tooth whitening remedies by some people. ( see further below about lemon juice)
  • Rubbing some walnut tree bark on your teeth is also said to remove stains from them, you could also try hardwood ash as it contains potassium hydroxide, an effective teeth whitener
  • Mixing equal amounts of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide (a teaspoon or two of each, careful not to swallow!) and rinsing well is another method of how to get whiter teeth.
  • Washing your mouth out with salty water can also help keep them clean and white, as can adding a little salt on top of your toothpaste, this can make your mouth feel sparkling clean
  • Try rubbing your teeth with the inside of an orange peel, some people have also used banana peel for this!

Preventing teeth stains and discoloration

As always, prevention is better than cure, if you smoke, quit, you'll be healthier too! Also avoid drinks such as coffee. Smoking and coffee are bad for teeth as these can stain teeth after a while.

Other methods

Methods people have used include brushing with lemon juice or cider vinegar, I recommend against these as they are said to be too abrasive and could wear away the enamel on your teeth after time!

The 1/8th part of my teeth are yellow near the gum line. I was told because I had tetracycline while I was wearing braces many years ago. The rest of my teeth have a nice cool white color. It's just the top that looks awful. If I just smile lightly you cannot see it unless I get real happy and smile too much then it shows. Can i just apply the whitening stuff to the top

I just tried brushing with the baking soda and hydrogen peroxide for 2 minutes. It killed my gums. I have like 4 white spots on my gums that are throbbing. Has anyone else experienced this?

Great suggestions! I've tried many products to whiten my teeth and most of the results were poor and I had tooth sensitivity as a result. The only product that truly worked for me was Power Swabs, which I experienced no sensitivity. My teeth remained white with little maintenance. It was a quick and easy method to whiten your teeth. Best whitening kit out there!

I tried the hydrogen peroxide and baking powder one. I used 6% of the peroxide and that still burned my gums..

Has anyone got a way of whitening your teeth that's ACTUALLY effective?

      Thanks :)

Hydrogen Peroxide is a powerful bleaching agent that all teeth whitener uses for whitening purposes. However, it is not recommended to us this yourself at home, because if you over use it, it will end up damaging your teeth and enamel which you totally do not want this happen!

BEFORE you try all or one of these suggestions, please try brushing your teeth after every meal for at least 2 minutes. You don't need any mouthwash, but doing this for even under a week can improve the colour of your teeth, as it will restore them to your natural colour. However; the salt and water combo for a mouthwash is probably your best bet. I would recommend a teaspoon of salt to every 300ml of water. This may be strong, and taste horrible (you can hold your nose if you wish, so you cannot taste the mixture). However, if you are going to try to whiten your teeth with the baking powder and hydrogen peroxide, MAKE SURE you get only a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution. Some solutions of the peroxide are around 30% or higher, this is most commonly used to for bleaching hair. So please do make sure it's only 3% strength, as if you don't. Your mouth will burn constantly for hours and your mouth will produce blisters and in if the blister gets a cut or bursts. It may become infected. NOT GOOD! as some of the people on the site have experienced! D: Oh and also; i've heard that vinegar. Lemon juice + salt mixed to a paste can help

Natural remedies like baking soda and hydrogen peroxide do work. The problem is the taste/smell. Just brush with toothpaste afterwards or use a mouthwash. Don't swallow peroxide! :)

what i and all my friends used to whiten our teeth,(because we had winter formal coming up in 1 month) was:

~2 table spoons of ground up liver, and sand,

(the sand is nescisary to help rip appart the liver cells)

      ~2 H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide)

mix the ingredients together and brush 3x daily for 2 weeks.

how this works is the peroxidase that is release out of the ground up liver cells combines with the H2O2 and goes through a chemical change, that naturaly whitens teeth. the sand is a little gritty to deal with, but its no bother if u want super white teeth! just rinse with lemon juice to exted the whitening proscess.

it worked for us! our dates all notice the results in our teeth come winter formal time!

I couldn't help but respond to the rejection of using baking soda and hydrogen peroxide but the willingness to buy the teeth whitening products or "let the professionals whiten your teeth". I have been on computer for several hours now looking into both of these options and I am not concerned at all about using the baking soada and peroxide because hydrogen proxide is EXACTLY the "whitening agent" used in the best products AND the agent used by the dentist. As for it working for some and not others, well depending on your teeth, some will be sussesful and others wont find it to be all that helpful. This is the same with ANY route a person might take. Ck out what i am saying. Just some fyi for anyone who doesn't realize it.

Trick: I couldn't believe it! Experiment with the amount of salt you use. Moderate to heavy salt(y)water (it tastes terrible ,I know, but try it). Gargle & swish with your mouth closed for 1 min (timed) -repeat step 1 at least 5 times. Rinse and then add salt to toothpaste and brush. And tongue brushing is very underrated. My breath smells and feels so much better now and my teeth are whiter and they feel stronger! I can get away with every 3 days. My dentist saw a big difference. Anna's comment is a bit scary. Who doesn't brush their teeth for months at a time?!

Very interesting read. I read a few articles on home made whitening systems, and it apparently works very well. I will have to give it a go :)

I've actually invested in a home whitening kit for myself which i will be documenting in my main website, just to see if it works...

The reason why people prefer to buy, is because, the results are quick. THat does nto mean that they work, it just shows exactly how much paint (non toxic, but not good for you either) the toothpaste and whitening products have. if you brush your teeth and they become whiter right away - you either painted them, or you haven't brushed for months before that.

Salt water is a nice mouth cleaner. For whiter teeth, I use the EverBright gel at; you just put this gel on your teeth for a short time each morning and then rinse out your mouth.

I have REALY bad teeth and its mainly from not brushing for months at a time, and now i regret it. im deffinetly gonna try the salt water and rubbing them with the inside of an orange peel, but i don't think ill use the whole hidrogen paroxide and baking soda thing cause of what everyone is saying about it. oh yeah and also, does anyone know how to get rid of a cavity? or atleast make it less noticable?

any sugjesstions would be great.thx again.:)

I agree that damage will probably occur with repeated use of lemon juice or cider vinegar. The potential for damage, however, would not due to their abrasiveness (a wearing away by friction). It would be associated with the acidic nature of these liquids (which have a pH on the order of 2.3 to 3.4). These acids would literally DISSOLVE away mineralized tooth structure (enamel and dentin) with each use.

I brushed my teeth less for a while, substituting salt water rinsing and making sure I hit all the hard to reach spots when I did brush my teeth. My dentist commented on how exceptionally clean my teeth were the next time I went in (overdue as always). I don't know what's so great about salt water, but it works wonders (supplementing tooth-brushing).
