What Does Olive Oil Do for Your Skin?

The properties of olive oil are beneficial not only for our health but also for the skin. Is used widely in the Mediterranean cuisine due to its health properties and its distinctive flavor and it has been used for centuries by the Greeks, Romans and Egyptians who new about its amazing benefits.

The Egyptians, for instance, used olive oil for body massages, hair care and to elaborate perfumes. Greeks and Romans discovered its healing properties and used it as an ointment in athletes and fighters.

It is rich in essential fatty acids that help to restore natural moisture levels of the skin and for that motive is added to many cosmetics to ensure that the skin remains hydrated. It is also of benefit to improve acne conditions and eczema. The cosmetic industry is filled with olive oil skin care products and we can find them in the form of facial moisturizers, serums, cleansers, soaps, shampoos, hair conditioners, hand creams, body creams and even make-up.

The antioxidant substances we can find in olive oil are called polyphenols and these protect the skin from free radical damage, delaying aging skin and wrinkles. Olive oil is packed with vitamin E as well as oleic acid and polyphenols, which help to smooth and boost the skin's elasticity. It restores moisture to the skin and promotes skin cell regeneration too. It has anti bacterial properties, and with olive oil a little bit goes a long way.

Applying it to the skin can improve certain skin problems such as dry skin, stretch marks and aging skin. When combined with other ingredients, it could be a perfect match to relieve and improve the skin.

Is Olive Oil Good for Wrinkles?

There have been several studies about the efficacy of olive oil when applied to the skin. These studies have found that olive oil is efficient on preventing and diminishing lines and wrinkles. Is beneficial for the skin because it contains antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Also its high content in fatty acids helps to restore natural moisture levels in the skin.

Research has also found a relation between consuming olive oil and wrinkles. In this study those who consumed olive oil on a daily basis presented fewer wrinkles that those who consumed less or not olive oil at all.
