What Causes Blotchy Skin Tone?
Darker patches of skin are caused by the over production of a chemical known as melanin. This is a process known as hyperpigmentation.

Over exposure to the sun is probably the biggest cause of uneven skin tone, especially on the face. Ultraviolet rays can do major damage to the first few layers of skin. A good tan can look healthy, but the darkening of the skin is a natural defense, it's your skins way of toughening up against the suns rays. Always use a high strength sunscreen.
Skin Trauma and Acne Scarring
Any kind of skin trauma will cause uneven skin tone. Acne scarring is probably the biggest cause of trauma to the skin. The medical term for acne scarring is post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Dark spots or patches of skin are seen where the skin has healed after an outbreak of acne. Soak a cotton ball or pad with a good quality apple cider vinegar, and apply directly to the skin twice daily. The vinegar is quite acidic, so test a small area of skin first. After the vinegar has dried, apply a moisturizer to hydrate the skin.
Organic Cider Vinegar
Licorice extract, or more specifically, licorice root extract, is excellent for getting an even skin tone. It's quite hard to come by, Chinese herbal stores and good health food stores are your best bet.
A staple of Chinese medicine, licorice extract is known to be a powerful anti-inflammatory, and is also recognized as being excellent for fading skin marks and smoothing the skin.
To apply it to the skin, first mix the extract with distilled water and soak a soft cotton cloth in the mixture, apply to the face for 10 - 15 minutes. Another method is to substitute distilled water for warm green tea, and apply in the same way.
