How To Grow Long, Luscious Hair

Updated on February 21, 2014

I don't claim to be an expert on hair, but since my own hair measures about 5 feet in length, I do know a few things about growing hair from personal experience.

I hope that you aren't expecting some miracle solution that will help you grow ten inches of hair in a month. Unfortunately, growing hair takes time and lots of patience. If you hear someone claim that they can do it otherwise, I'd be very cautious before taking their advice. However, there are several things that you can do to obtain healthy hair and speed up the growing process - if you're willing to pay the price.

My lovely sister.
My lovely sister.

You may have noticed that women from the same family often have the same hair growth patterns. If you should see a woman that grows hair well, the chances are that the other women in her family grow hair well too. The same is true for women who cannot grow hair well. This is because heredity many times plays a big role in how our hair grows. In fact, my sister has extremely long hair and has written an article with pictures that describes her long hair journey. You can check it out here.

You may be saying, "My family members just aren't hair growers, so I'm stuck, right?" Not necessarily. Many times family traits are inherited because nutritional habits are also passed down. Nutritional deficiencies can be inherited just the same as hair color. The good news is the cycle can be broken, but it takes patience. With proper nutrition, deficiencies can almost always be reversed, but sometimes it takes several months or even years to completely reverse.

Curly hair is beautiful in it's own way whether long or short.
Curly hair is beautiful in it's own way whether long or short.

If you have very curly hair, you may have a hard time growing it long. Curly hair rarely grows long, however, it's certainly not impossible. Curly hair is beautiful in its own way, whether it's long or short. That is, as long as it stays healthy!

There are several health situations that can keep your hair from looking its best. Thyroid problems, gastrointestinal issues, and even hormone imbalances. If you don't notice at least some improvement in your hair's quality after several months, you may consider an underlying health problem.

Thankfully, modern science has made it possible to get proper nutrition very easily without having to eat several pounds of the foods that contain the nutrients we need. This is through nutritional supplements. Even when taking nutritional supplements, make sure that you're getting ones of a good quality, or they just won't benefit. Make sure the supplement manufacturer has a reputation for good quality.

Even if you don't have a deficiency, proper nutrition and supplements can be used to boost you hair's growth rate. If you're wanting to add foods to your diet that will help hair growth here are a few you may want to try:

Barley: This nutritional grain is good for a number of things, but it's high content of niacin, a B vitamin, is essential for healthy hair.

High protein foods: Without enough protein, hair is forced into the resting phase, and is shed prematurely. Try adding more lean meats, beans or lentils to your diet. Protein is composed of the amino acids necessary to grow new cells - including hair. (Have you ever noticed how beautiful a Hispanic woman's hair is? It's because of the high protein from the beans in their diet).

Avocados, nuts and seeds: These contain high vitamin E, necessary for healthy hair.

Raw oats and bean sprouts: These contain silica, a very important mineral that is a must for growing healthy hair.

Sufficient fat: Many people automatically turn their noses up when fat is mentioned, but certain amounts of fats are necessary for health in general and for healthy hair. The key is finding the right kinds of fats. EFAs (essential fatty acids) found in foods such as fish, and pumpkin, are extremely important for healthy hair. Also, find a good balance from other plant and animal sources.

Here's a list of the supplements that will help you grow great hair:

VITAMINS: Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Biotin, Inositol, Niacin, Pantothenic Acid, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12.

MINERALS: Calcium, Potassium, Iron, Magnesium, Manganese, Iodine, Selenium, Copper, Silica, Zinc, Sulfur, Chromium

HERBS: Sage, Chamomile, Catnip, Burdock Root, Horsetail

Get great vitamin, mineral and herbal supplements at local health food and/or drug stores, mail order catalogs or over the internet such as on eBay.

Here's Some Hair Tips That I Use:

  • Never brush hair when wet. This stretches the hair and makes it brittle.
  • Be patient when combing out snarls, use your fingers to break loose tough ones.
  • Shampoo the scalp well and the ends lightly. The scalp gets more oil, and the ends dry easily.
  • Shampoo less often. 3 or 4 times a week should be sufficient. This will keep from stripping your hair's natural oils.
  • Shampoo gently. Spread shampoo gently down the length of hair; don't massage and tangle.
  • Don't over-brush. Brushing too often causes breakage. Try using a high quality boar bristle brush; it'll be worth paying a little more for a good one.
  • Pin up or braid. Whenever you sleep or do housework, pin up or braid your hair to reduce breakage.
  • Use LOTS of conditioner, especially on the ends. Rinse thoroughly with cool water. For extra benefit, let set a minute of two before rinsing.
  • Deep condition occasionally by putting a thick layer of conditioner on hair then covering with a thermal shower cap. Blast with a hair dryer a few times, then let set. Rinse with cool water.

So everyone is saying you should only wash your hair like every three days! I am a swimmer so my hair gets wet everyday and has a lot of chlorine. My hair is still very soft and healthy, semi-thick and mid-back length. So what should I do to try and keep the natural oils in my hair??

      Great hub and ideas.

I have also read your sisters hubs and she has an amazing story.

Her hair is beautiful. Like I commented on your sisters hub, today hair just doesn't grow for woman the way it use to (with the few exceptions, your sister being one) we do too much damage today with all the hot techniques out there for our hair.

Colouring and perming does not help either. Back in the bible days the woman had long natural hair due to the environment and of course for the fact they went natural. They had virgin hair.

If you do see a woman with very long hair like your sisters, usually it is hair extensions.

I know coconut oil is good for your hair but for me very expensive. Silica is also good, I now use biotin as it is cheap, however I find it works very slow, too slow. The results wont be out of this world and will start to take effects months and months later, but it helps to some degree.

      Bless you

      Laurie

My hair is wavy, neck-shoulder length and it is thin and not heavy. My hair does not grow a lot, when hair reaches the shoulders then stops growing. It is been like that for years. The ends split. I am 20 years old and I want my hair to be long. What can I do to make my hair thick and heavy? I use the best shampoos and I haven't seen a difference. I wash my hair 2-3 times a week. Every time I see my friend her hair is longer and longer. Also can you tell me what to do to make my wavy hair luscious?

olive oil or tissue oil. massage into ur scalp and tips of the hair. this should work. Also try using horse shampoo, it is supossed to add strength and shine into ur hair. Takin vitamin with biotin in it will help stimulate hair growth while keeeping it shiny and healthy. Hope this works!!!!

Being patient is the key to long hair...I have been using tissue oil in my hair for the past month. I noticed over a centimeter in growth..which is quite good...an my hair is noticeably more shiny and glossy and soft. Always massage ur head in circular motions when washing with shampoo. i do not use conditioner since i use the tissue oil and it does not leave any greasy residue which helps me keep my hair cleaner for longer. Hope this helps you

Try using olive oil...it beats any conditioner and is a natural treatment for your hair. Don't sleep in a tight ponytail...massage in two beaten eggs in your hair, let dry and then shampoo off well...always use a wide toothed comb for your hair. Never blow dry hair when its wet, hair is most fragil;e when it's wet. Try to trim hair a 1/2 inch every three months. I use a leave in conditioner in my hair it's absoultely excellent. It's by Wetline Pro and ccalled 'natural green'. It has horse tail extract, aloe vera and other natural ingredients and helps me grow my hair. I would recommend it to anyone. my hair is very healthy now and is at my mid-back. When my hair is oily, i usually put it up in a ponytail or in a jaw grip and looks that way. I wash my hair twice week. My hair growes quite fast using these methods. Also, when shampooing, massage scalp for about 5 minutes this helps with the blood circulation and helps hair grow. Drinking lots of water is extremenly important since your hair also needs that water to grow. I usually drink about 2 litres or more a day. I hope my comments and suggestions work. Good luck guys with growing your hair.

Hi. I'm a model and I need my hair to be at my waste by september and it's damaged and a little past my shoulders. I was addicted to bleach and I quit bleaching my hair and I take Biotin. I get oil treatments every once in a while. Any advice? I need my hair to grow ASAP! As a model, it's my job to let them damage my hair and use heat, so it's so hard!

Hi, I am 16 years old and I recently had a nasty haircut, leaving less than half of my hair just below my shoulders, and the top 3/4 is just past my ears. All I can do is tie it and braid it back, wearing it down it looks ridiculous. My hair is naturally blonde, pin-straight, and thin. I've literally done everything and I want to get out of this! I just got my hair to reach below my shoulders for the first time in my lifetime (my mom liked to keep it real short during my childhood, which I hated.)

I hope that all your tips help me out, I've been trying all kinds of things but my hair is impossibly slow at growing! I always eat healthy and I am taking supplements but nothing is helping speed it up just yet!

Thanks for a few tips I haven't heard about before as well, like shampooing GENTLY.

Is there anything else I should possibly know about?

I have layers in my hair that are even shorter than my bangs. The results: messy, untamed, frizzy looking, losing my mind over hair. How do I get through this? Grin and bear it? Hi... great tips!

My hair is like oily twords the top of my head but the rest of my hair is very dry. About 2 years ago I decided to dye my hair blonde (naturally red headed) I had very long, thick, beautiful hair. However, I didn't get my hair dyed professionally and bleached it so many times to try to get the 'bleached' blonde look that it totally killed my hair and I had to get about 6-7 inches chopped off. Now my hair is finally starting to grow again.. but there is getting to be a thin spot in the back of my head (my dermatologist told me its just a calic to not worry about it) But I honestly think it's thinning there, this happened before I dyed it so... I was wondering if the vitamins would help more hair grow in that spot and also if you would recommend me using Biolage hair shampoo and conditioner. Thanks for listening!

My hair has always been on the thin side. Thank God I have curls that kind of hide how thin it it, but even with the curls, I still feel my hair is "see through." I've recently resorted to wearing lace front wigs in an effort to have the hair I've always wanted. I've often been very much into health and fitness and eat a proper diet with high protein, however it doesn't seem to do anything for my hair or nails which are just plain aweful. I had my thyroid tested thinking I may have an issue since both my mom and my aunt have irregular thyroids (one hype and one hyper). My doctor confirmed that mine is operating as normal and I am healthy. I recently bought a hair oil "Doo Gro, Mega Thick Growth Oil" which seems to be helping a little bit, or maybe it's my imagination. I also bought a box of Knox gelatin, which I haven't started yet. I am not sure if I should smear it around in my hair or ingest it. I also bought prenatal vitamins which I am afraid to take since I already take a daily multivitamin with fish oil supplements. I instead crushed up the vitamins and put them into my shampoo, which some other hair forum suggested. I am not sure if I am on the right track with all of this... I have never dyed or permed my hair. My hair is pretty much "virgin" hair. I don't use heat styling aids. All I do on a daily basis is spread some leave in conditioner and maybe a bit of curl serum and leave the house. Since I started the wig thing, I don't even really do that. I cover it in a nylon cap and throw the wig on and leave. However, I am worried that the combs in the wig may be damaging my hair... Please help and let me know if I am somewhat on the right track. Also, would you suggest I eat/drink the gelatin or smear it all over my head?

Hey girl. I am 1/4th black, and I've been told because of that it's hard to grow hair? I have no idea if that's true or not. ( I hope not! ) Up to 6th grade, I had long, gorgeous, curly hair that I, along with everyone else loved. But the summer before 7th grade, I had it cut to look like Selena Gomez. -___- DUMB, I know, but ever since then, it's not growing as fast as I want it. I've read literally hundreds of tips. I'm just now starting to do them, and take viitimans for it. I was wondering if you have any tips that could help me? Thank you very much ! And I must say, your sisters hair is gorgeouuuus!

thank you so much "blessedmommy" for the very informative hub. my hair was long last year but when my stylist retouched my highlights she used too much bleach making all my hair eventually fall out over time. prior to my hair falling out it had been growing very fast and was to the middle of my back in long layers. in order to make my hair even i had to cut it neck legnth. it's been almost a year since i've cut my hair and its only grown 2 inches total!

the texture of my hair is medium coarse (i'm a black hispanic) so i wash and treat my hair once a week with a hair oil and try to use the curling iron sparingly. something i notice is that my eating habits have changed since i've had long hair (i use to eat fish 3-5 times a week) as oppose to now where i eat fish seldomly (due to now living with boyfriend who doesn't eat fish at all). maybe this is part of the reason why my hair is growing back so slow or is this all in my head?

Thanks for the tips, I already had quite long hair, just past the mid back area, but I was concerned about maintaining it- having healthy hair and all that. I use to wash my hair every night and always combed it while it was still wet. Due to your advice I've stopped washing it every night and combing it whilst wet and now my hair grows soo fast, and I lose less hairs every time I brush, it just seems nicer too its less dry and a lot shinier.

It's me again. I posted 6 weeks ago and still haven't received any advice/suggestions/response(s) from the OP! There's been quite a few questions, yet no answers. Has the original poster gone on vacation or simply gave up on this website? I took a great deal of time and effort to ask questions and would appreciate some common courtesy!!!

I have been taking 6 pills every night and have seen a significant hair growth, my hair hardly grows and over the past month it has grown 2 inches. I take 4.5g MSM, 5g biotin, and a prenatal vitamin (Citra-natal) which contains omegas/fatty acids. I would recommend this.

      Hello!

Lotsa useful information here... after reading a lot of tips 'n' such, I've still had no luck. Here's my issue...

I am 30 yr old, Caucasian. I have ALWAYS had very thin, oily hair, to the point of having to wash it every day.

It has a natural wave to it that I do not like which in turn forces me to blow dry it straight & occasionally straighten it (maybe only once or twice a wk). My hair also breaks very easily, even when trying to be gentle with it weather it's wet or dry. I also try to wear my hair up when I can but pretty much all hair ties cause more breakage. Even worse, it's at this shoulder length where my clothes rub up against the ends. I have tried hair, skin & nails vitamins, various shampoos & conditioners, oils (which tend to make my hair MORE oily, even when added while my hair is damp after the shower). I also pretty much have to shampoo every day (b/c my hair is so oily) and I try to use a rich conditioner on JUST the ends, followed by a leave-in conditioner but I still have frayed ends that tend to get worse 2-3 hrs into the day due to humidity. I am just beyond frustrated!!!

I've been reading a lot about shampoos, conditioners, vitamins & other treatments but still have no idea what to do. Any guidance would be appreciated! Thanks!

      Hi,

I've always wanted long hair. But my hair has always been shoulder length or less. Mostly because I always end up cutting it or getting layers.

So I decided I wanted to grow my hair out. I have naturally curly hair, so I grew out all my layers and it got a few inches past my shoulders. I loved it! But, I still wanted long hair. So I went in for a trim and the lady cut it up past my shoulders:'(

I got fed up so I bought extensions.

Is this going to damage my hair so it wont grow as fast, or grow at all? They are clip in and I've only had them for a week or so.

As a child i had very thick hair. When i wuz 12 i got short layers and then it became a little thin but it wuz still thick. and then i did it again in april and it wuz okay. but after school reopened again i wuz pretty sick for a month and had to take antibiotics and steriods for my asthma for some time. after that it got a bit thin and then i cut it again. so each time its short its fine but when it starts to get long i tend to play with my hair a lot so i don't know if that's also the problem. so where can i get these herbs? and i also have mild to moderate ezcema so will these herbs also help with ezcema or just the hair?

i am 14 i used to have nice thickish hair. my friends then made me realise that my hair looks thinner and now i cant stop thinking about it!!!!!! i don't care about length because my hair is by my waist i know that it thins out a bit towards the ends but this seems like a lot! also i want to know how to keep from getting split ends and keeping them nice. my friends go on at me because i wash my hair allll the time once a day and they say it strips the oils from you hair and yess i know it does but i cant stand not washing it i wash it less in winter but in summer i swim everyday in the pool and i figure washing it everyday is better then leaving chlorine in it....help??!?!?!?!

This post offers a great deal of advice. As a kid my hair never grew past my neck. A couple months ago my hair reached 1/4" below my bra strap. Unfortunately I had to cut it up to above my shoulders due to the terrible split ends. I want my hair to grow back much faster than it is. I've always wanted to have long, flowing hair ever since I was 4. I'm doing everything I can think of. Please note that I come from a family of all types of hair and all lengths. So my question is, does this mean that some of us are nutrient deficient? I take all kinds of herbs and supplements and I just started using Mega-Tek (which is designed for horses but safe for human use). I know it has a great deal of protein in it and you must be careful about protein overload (which I am). However my hair seems to "love" protein and I counteract it with moisture. I'm in several hair challenges at work and on some of the hair boards. I want so bad to win. My hair grows anywhere from 1/8" - 1" per month. Why is this? Also I recently did a Global Brazilian Hair Treatment (2nd time) and my hair likes (not "loves") it. I'm also taking the Sacred Eden vitamins but not noticing any extra growth. I spent a lot of money on those-several months supply and still have some left!! I massage my hair for at least 5 minutes EVERY night and drink at least 2 litres of water per day. I only wash my hair once per week and do a deep conditioning at least once per month. I've been drinking protein shakes every other day. I'm a trooper, but I'm also very impatient and I hate to lose. Please offer me any advice that you might have other than what I'm already doing. Oh and I go for a 1/2 hour walk each evening for exercise. Is there any hormone injections that you know of or anything else that might speed up the progress of hair growth (from the scalp that is) :) Thanks in advance!

I just wanted to note that one thing that has REALLY helped my hairs health is installing shower head filters. There was a noticeable difference in my hair and skin's health immediately! That being said, I have LA city water, and live in an older building that probably has pretty icky pipes, so this might only help people who don't have great shower water. I didn't realize they even MADE shower head filters until just recently, but it is the best investment in my health I've made! I installed a KDF type filter first, and then a Vitamin C filter below it, then my shower head. The KDF filter is sort of like a Brita filter except they are capable of handling the water volume and temperature (this is key!!! normal faucet filters cannot effectively filter warm/hot water!), and the Vitamin C filter removes and leftover chlorine or chloramine in the water. Vitamin C is also good for your skin and hair, anyway. My lungs are also a lot clearer after showering, as I'm no longer inhaling aerosolized chlorine, so this my be helpful for those of you who also have sensitive lungs. Just a thought!

giubbotti moncler speeded up the growth in several Olympic games. Because of the special designs, outlet moncler was noticed by the official supporters of the 10th French national Olympic held in Grenoble in 1968. Then monclear was the rooster design trademark of France’s logo in next many years. In the winter games, moncler women proved themselves to be excellently suitable for skiing. Their designs of the monclear outlet were not too thick for athletes in the skiing but make the muscles to keep warm for each movement. Thus giubotti created the first skiing windbreak and clothing. It was named “Nepal”, because there are two waterproof cortical shoulder pads for the skiers to put in his shoulder Cornwall equipment rentals. After these, moncler giubbotti saw the potential great success in winter jacket. In moncler jackets women series, moncler branson are worth of being introduced to us with outstanding characters.
