Dreadlock Hairstyles

Dreadlock hairstyles are more popular and acceptable today. It never fails when most people decide they want dreadlock they decide when they have short hair or when they have a chemical process and want to start over.

If this is you most likely you are an African descent with kinky hair. Which by the way is the best hair type for dreadlocks because this hair is already formed in a coil like shape and will easily lock into the form when beginning the dreadlocks.

All other hairtypes will have to use a backcombing method to dreadlocking hairstyling.

How To Start Locs On Short Hair

  1. Dreadlocks can be started on at least a half inch of hair, less if really small spirals which give a kinky look when loose.
  2. The spiral form is seen once hair is twist with a comb end and product s used. It is best to use a barber comb with a very small edge.
  3. Hair is parted with c shapes and in bricklayer rows.
  4. Hair is completed and dried.

How To Make Dreadlock Hairstyle On Short Hair

To start dreads on short hair, the hair must be freshly shampooed with your favorite dreadlock shampoo. You will need metal clips to hold each twist if you prefer a tighter look on root area. However if the hair is very kinky already clips are unnessary, this hair will hold it's form until dry.

The process will get faster as you get practice. I will look as if you are using too much product but the water in the product will dissolve under the dryer. Using too little will not allow your hair to to last long. Using too much may cause it to flake.

Dreadlock Hairstyling Products

  • Metal Clips
  • Metal Barber Comb
  • Dreadlock shampoo
  • Dreadlock styling Gel
  • Hair Sheen
  • Satin Scarf /Loc Soc(While Sleeping)

There are many gels you can use that are made with a non flake formula. Jamaican Dreadlocks Gel line has a non flakey formula and a firmer formula for less kinky hair. I like to spray hair with isoplus oil sheen or a shining product to help eliminate flakiness.

FYI: It may appear that the stylist is using too much gel but remember the gel is filled with water to help application and help comb slide through hair. Once completely dried you will have a firm set dreadlocks to be proud of.

Remember hair can be clipped at root area for a firmer look and tighter hold. Clipping the whole head is optional but I prefer to at least clip the dreadlocks around the hairline for a more neater appearance that will last for about two weeks. Protect your dreadlock hairstyle at night or play with your own Loc Soc hair wrap.
