What Causes Hair Breakage?

Understanding the root cause of the problem is the best first step to solve any problem including hair breakage. So what causes hair breakage?

One of the most common causes of hair breakage is not enough amounts of certain vitamins and minerals. vitamin B, vitamin E, iron, zinc and silica are important vitamins and minerals necessary in maintaining healthy hair. Not enough water can also contribute to hair breakage.

External factors that contribute to hair breakages include:

  • Chemical hair treatment including perms and relaxers

  • Excessive heat from hair dryers, curling irons, etc.

  • Braids, if too tight can cause hair breakage.

  • Pulling or brushing while your hair is wet. Your hair is weaker when it's wet.

What You Can Do To Stop Hair Breakage

If the problem is dietary, you can fix the problem by eating sunflower seeds, almonds, walnuts, flax seed oil and green leafy vegetables. Plenty of water is good your health and helps minimize hair breakage.

Here are some other practical tips to stop hair breakage:

  • Trim split ends regularly. Split ends can lead to splitting the entire length of a hair strand. To prevent this, make sure that your trim split ends regularly to prevent it from getting worse.

  • If you like to curl your hair, use hair curlers instead of curling irons.

  • Towel dry your hair instead of using a hair dryer.

  • Use a soft-bristled brush and a wide toothed comb. Avoid combing or brushing roughly specially when your hair is wet.

  • Shampoo at least once or twice a week. Using shampoo everyday can remove the natural oil from your hair making it dry. Make sure you don't shampoo two days in a row unless you have really oily hair.

  • Use hair moisturizers.

  • Hot oil treatment can be done at home. Below are instructions on how to use hot oil treatment.

Hot Oil Treatment At Home

  1. Put a few spoonfuls of virgin coconut oil in a bowl and heat it for 20 to 30 seconds in a microwave oven. (You can use virgin olive oil if virgin coconut oil is not available).

  2. Massage hair and scalp with warm virgin coconut oil.

  3. Cover your hair with shower and leave it on for about an hour.

  4. Wash and shampoo your hair thoroughly then apply conditioner.

  5. Do this twice a week.
