How to Choose Makeup for Your Teenage Daughter

Updated on January 17, 2014

Help Her Find The Best Makeup

Discovering that your personal makeup arsenal is being frequented by your favorite "mini-me" teenager is a bittersweet, yet exciting opportunity for mother-daughter bonding. Establish boundaries early on in a loving and fun way by planning a trip with your daughter to find the best products for her to look and feel her best.

Should She Even Wear Makeup?

At this stage in her life, your daughter likely wants to wear more than just blush and clear lipgloss or mascara.

The point of makeup between age thirteen and eighteen is to help her to feel confident and diminish her insecurities. The most common insecurities, such as undereye circles are usually allergy-related, while oily acne-prone skin usually accompanies puberty.

If it helps her to feel more confident while still staying natural, then the makeup has done its job.

Why are you considering buying your daughter makeup?

Coastal Scents Eclipse Concealer Palette

This palette is best for both light and dark (red or yellow undertone)skintones. If you are light, you may use the darker shades as eyeshadows! If you are dark, you can use the yellow shades as highlighters, but you will likely not get use out of the really light shades, unless you want to get creative on Halloween ;)

Clear Complexion Tips

Start with choosing an oil-free concealer to cover blemishes. At this age, she does not need the coverage of a full-cover foundation makeup, unless her skin is very dark, with severe acne or unless she has a severe skin condition that makes her self-conscious.

How To Find Out Her Undertone

The majority of women have a warmy undertone with a yellow base, but very fair skins might have a pink undertone with some pinky beige. When choosing a shade of concealer, yellow-based concealer neutralizes slight redness.

If there is extreme redness (such as in skin conditions like rosacea) green neutralizes the red, but will need a medium coverage foundation on top to cover the slight grey 'cast'.

If she has a fair to medium or olive complexion, choose the concealer that looks closest to the color just above her jawline. Do not choose a color close to the t-zone color since this area tends to be more on the pink or reddish side.

Choosing The Right Shade For Dark Skintones

If she has a darker complexion or is African-American, she will have two or three shades of an undertone, ranging from light to dark. The undertones in the majority of dark skintones are usually red but can be blue. Choosing a concealer for darker skintones is a bit trickier, since the skin surrounding the face by the hairline is almost always darkest and lightens as it goes into the middle, by the nose. Choose a concealer that is in between the three tones you see; not too light and not too dark. You will know if the shade was too light if using the product gives her an "ashy" look. Do not blend this concealer into the darker edges of the face, only use in the lightest to medium-dark areas. Usually, makeup-artists will use two or even three different foundations or concealers for darker skintones. Since this can be expensive for most people, I highly recommend buying a concealer palette which will last throughout the year.

How To Apply Concealer

If she is using a product such as Proactive or something else that dries the skin, be sure to apply a good oil-free moisturizer five minutes prior to concealer application.

Using clean fingertips, apply the concealer straight from the makeup palette or jar. Very gently and quickly tap the area that needs full coverage. For a more sheer application, rub and blend the concealer in.

Primer and Palette Deals!

Urban Decay Mini Stardust & Eyeshadow Primer Potion Duo
Urban Decay Mini Stardust & Eyeshadow Primer Potion Duo

Urban Decay Primer in ‘Original’ is known as the best in the industry. The original goes on clear, so it may be used on EVERY skintone. This exclusive little set comes with a highly-pigmented sparkly purple eyeshadow by Urban Decay.

Beyond Clear Mascara

So now that her skin is perfect, the last thing you want to do is to go on a Kardashian beauty mission (although that's probably what she wants). You want the makeup to define her features and natural beauty without all the boys calling the house.

The most important thing for her to learn is the importance of eyeshadow primer.

Eyeshadow primer will not just make the eyeshadow color intensity "pop" but it will also keep her shadows on and smooth the texture of the shadows. It will also absorb excess oils on her lids which can cause her eyeshadows to crease.

The best eyeshadow primer is unfortunately pretty costly but the truth is, investing in the best eyeshadow primer you can buy will make even the cheapest pharmacy eyeshadows look amazing!

Do an experiment for yourself.

Go to your nearest Sephora or Ulta and smear a small dab of Urban Decay's Eyeshadow Primer (this primer was rated #1 in the cosmetics industry) on the back of your hand. Allow one minute to dry, then take a brush and any color eyeshadow tester you see in front of you. Using a brush, apply a color onto the "primed" area of your skin and then the area on your hand with no primer and you will see a huge difference.

This set includes an allover brush, a crease brush and a smudge brush; all the brushes you or your daughter needs for practically any look!

Applying Eye Makeup and Eyeshadows

The best way to apply eyeshadow is with an eyeshadow brush. There are several kinds of brushes depending on what kind of eyeshadow and what kind of application (sheer or heavy) you are looking for. For your teenager, you will probably want an allover eyeshadow brush (which will distribute pigment evenly over the entire lid) and a smudge brush (to soften the eyeliner stroke immediately after it is applied).

High quality makeup brushes tend to be expensive, so another option is to go to Michaels, AC Moore or any art-supply store; there you will find genuine sable or teklon (nylon) brushes for much cheaper than department store prices.

There are so many eye makeup application tutorials for her to watch and learn on Kandee Johnson is my favorite Youtube makeup artist; her video tutorials are entertaining, diverse and informative. A few practice runs with her vlogs and you'll both be creating celebrity looks like pros!

What Color Eyeliner Should I Buy?

What most young girls have a tendency to reach for is the black eyeliner. For daily use, this is just too much and may give off the wrong message; try to coach her to save the dark, smoky eyes for only special occasions. If she insists on black eyeliner, make sure she never, ever leaves the house with bright lipstick on as well, since only one feature should be accentuated to avoid makeup overkill; recommend a light or clear gloss instead.

Accentuate her eyecolor with a specific eyeliner color. One makeup-artist trick you probably don't know is to choose a liner that is opposite (complementary) and darker than her eyecolor on the color spectrum.

For example, if her eyes are blue, a reddish bronze eyeliner will bring them out since orange is the opposite of blue.

If her eyes are green, a dark magenta or deep, reddish purple will make the green "pop."

Experiment with colors and check out a real color wheel to see exactly which colors are closest to the opposite of her eyecolor. If there are several shades in her eyecolor, go with the lightest flecks of color to determine its opposite.

Make sure you buy her a waterproof eyeliner and remover so that the liner doesn't make her look like a raccoon after gym class. Waterproof eyeliner should always be capped immediately after use since they will dry out very quickly. If she needs help applying the eyeliner and smudging, there are infinite tutorials on to learn from.

When it comes to waterproof eyeliner, drugstore brands like the ones by NYC Cosmetics are just as effective as the expensive ones. Be sure to sharpen before each use for a creamy, precise line.

Nivea Lip Care A Kiss Of Flavor Strawberry Tinted Lip Care SPF 10 (Pack of 6)

This is my favorite slightly sheer reddish lip balm with a touch of strawberry! This lip balm usually retails in CVS for about 2.99 each, but on Amazon its much cheaper when you buy six at a time.

The Best Lip Balm Or The Best Lip Gloss?

The rule is, the stickier the lip gloss is, the longer-lasting it will be. If it is more emollient, like a lipbalm, it is likely to need more applications throughout the day.

Choosing a lip product for your daughter all depends on the occasion she will be using it for. Is it for daily use or are there lots of events coming up that she will be attending?

For a daily alternative to makeup lip products, Nivea and Burt's Bees makes some beautiful and hydrating lip balms in an array of colors (some in the Burt's Bees brand could even pass for lipstick!) while the Nivea ones come in sheer colors and shimmer finishes.
