Natural Ways of Lightening Your Skin at Home

Darker skin due to acne scars can make anyone feel self-conscious about the way they look and how feel they feel about themselves. My son has had quite bad acne and I guess I did too when I was a teenager, so I know that he feels bad about how it looks. We didn't know that you can help it look and feel better just by doing a few simple things like natural skin bleaching. Learn with me how to get a lighter skin and lessen the effect of acne scars at home naturally, and quickly feel better about how your skin looks and feels.

If your acne scars bug you like they did my son, begin with things you can do at home without resorting to stronger measures first.Your skin does rejuvenate to a larger extent but it is easy enough to damage it, so following the rule of least invasive treatments to start with is always best.
Anyway, here are a few things to get started with, and also an explanation of what happens and why, when acne scarring leaves darker pigmentation on your face.

Lemon Juice

Ways to Lighten Your Skin Using Natural Foods Found in Your Fridge

Lemon Juice:
Lemon works as a natural bleach and it can fade away dark spots on the skin. Simply mix equal parts of lemon juice and water and dab it on the hyper-pigmented (darker) spots. Leave it on the skin for about 10 minutes and then rinse off with lukewarm water. For best results do this 2-3 times a day.

The mint leave made into a paste is another simple method you can use to make your skin lighter. Blend enough mint leaves to make a fresh paste and apply on the face. Leave the mint paste on the skin for about 20 minutes.
(You could take advantage of this time to sit quietly in a warm spot; taking the opportunity to relax and perhaps catch up on some reading or just close your eyes.)
At the end of the 20 minutes, gently wash the paste off the skin with warm water. Not only does this paste lighten the skin but it will give it a lovely texture as well.

Potato is another natural food that has bleaching properties and is a common natural way for lightening the skin. It acts as a bleaching agent that lightens patches, blemishes and any dark skin. Here is another opportunity to have a moment or three to relax. Take thin slices of fresh potato and apply to the affected skin and leave them on for about 30 minutes. This allows the skin to absorb the juice and lightens the skin. At the end of the 30 minutes rinse and pat dry.

More Ways to Naturally Get Lighter Skin Food for the Skin

Honey Yogurt mask:
A honey yogurt mask is another natural way to bleach the skin safely that can be used to help fade dark acne spots and lighten your skin.
To make ~ Mix two spoons of yogurt, one teaspoon of honey and two tablespoons of cooked oatmeal together. Apply the mixture evenly on the face and leave it to dry. Another chance to put your feet up and relax. Anytime I've put on a mask on my face, I've taken the option of having a bubble bath at the same time to maximize the effects and just luxuriate!
Once the mask has dried gently rinse it off with warm water and pat dry.

Aloe Vera:

Aloe Vera is a powerful astringent and can be directly applied to any acne spots you may have. It has natural anti-bacterial and anti-septic properties and it can be safely used it as a natural acne treatment. Apply it as needed till your acne fades. (It is also great for any skin condition, especially sunburn. It has a cooling effect on my skin when I have used it for mild sunburn.)

Turmeric and Lime:

Another common way you can lighten your skin is by using turmeric and lime. Apply a mixture of turmeric and lime on the affected areas and leave it on for 10 minutes before gently washing it off with warm water. Both lime and turmeric have bleaching properties and their regular use can help produce a more flawless, lighter skin complexion.

Oddly enough eggs are also excellent for lightening the skin, especially if you have oily skin like me.
To prepare ~ separate the egg white from egg yolk. Beat the egg white till frothy. Rub it gently on the face and neck. Wait till it is dry then wash it off the face gently with warm water.
Egg whites work as a moisturizer for oily skin as well as helping lighten post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation.

Post-Inflammatory Hyper-Pigmentation What Is It?

One of the most common skin ailments affecting people everywhere in the world is acne.

What is acne and what does it have to do with post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation?

Acne results from clogged pores that become inflamed with fast growing bacteria. Even after the acne has healed the post-inflammatory scars can continue to be seen.
When the skin darkens as a result of the healing process this is called Post-inflammatory Hyper-pigmentation. This happens because the skin's response to inflammation is to stimulate melanocytes which discolor and darken the skin.

Generally these darkened areas will lighten over time, but for those who wish to speed up the process to lighten their skin, natural home remedies can be a safe way of slowing melanin production and make acne scars appear much lighter.

How to Get Lighter Skin - Prevention is Better than Cure

These simple remedies can help you lighten your skin naturally at home.

A few more easy ways to help support getting healthy looking skin:

~Use sunblock or a sunblock moisturizer or foundation to prevent the sun's damaging rays darkening areas of pigmentation more.

~Drink 8 glasses of water a day to rehydrate your body and your skin.

~Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables each day so that you are providing your skin with healthy vitamins and minerals.

~If you smoke and you can, reduce how much you smoke or give it up altogether; nothing ages your skin faster.

I hope these simple home skincare recipes will help lighten your skin, and help give you a lovelier look.

Thanks for stopping by - I'd love to hear from you...

Hello fellow hubber! I came across your hub because I started to have some pigmentation on my face and I'd say that lemon works well on me but I mix it with just the right amount of Apple Cider Vinegar. Makes my skin glow as well. On drinking 8 glasses of water, I'm not sure about it after watching Dr. OZ and he said, it is a MYTH. Quite confusing but apparently, liquid intake and not necessarily just 8 glasses of water will rehydrate our skin. Guess, you'll ponder too on this, eh? Voted useful! (:

Hey thanks for the great tips.. i just wanted to know whether lemon and tumeric leave your skin slightly burnt and dry after using it constantly? will you have skin irritations?

When you have achieved the desired lightening affect, you only need to maintain it by reducing the frequency to perhaps once a fortnight, or two or three days every month. Using a good moisturizer will counter the tendency for lemon to dry some skin types, and using the egg white mask will certainly help with that. You would use the turmeric with lime...not lemon. Thanks for your comment..

      Dear Ms. Baker,

I was wondering if I should simply perform one remedy at a time, or use multiple ones simultaneously?

    • Johanna Baker profile image

Johanna Mary Elisabeth Baker 4 years ago from Christchurch, New Zealand

I would suggest one a time and give it a few weeks to observe the effect before trying another one ... if that is actually necessary. In depends greatly on your skin type but a good general one to begin with would be the egg white. I hope this helps...

I had no idea about using mint for this! This is good news for me though, I have loads of it just lying around :) I'm just wondering though, if you had only certain spots to lighten would you just apply it to those areas or would that just cause a blotchy effect?

    • Johanna Baker profile image

Johanna Mary Elisabeth Baker 4 years ago from Christchurch, New Zealand

If you apply it to the whole face the lighter parts will become less noticeable as the darker skin becomes lighter.

Do you need to mix lemon with water

    • Johanna Baker profile image

Hi Joy, you mix equal parts lemon juice and water so if you have 50mls lemon you add 50mls water to it and use that.

      Hi Casey,

You don't add honey to the egg whites and you wait till the egg white mask dries completely before washing it off. Thanks for your question.

Thnx so much, great tips, can egg whites be used everyday as a face mask, cos I ve a dark sunburn on my face,

    • Johanna Baker profile image

Johanna Mary Elisabeth Baker 2 years ago from Christchurch, New Zealand

Face masks should really only be used once or twice a week at most but because the egg white mask is moisturizing as well, more frequently shouldn't hurt. If you get any kind of reaction to increased frequency leave it for a bit and go back to once a week or less. (This should only be the case if you have allergies and would have trouble eating eggs as well)

Hello, pls I had a terrible sun burn on my face,I tried egg whites buh it only reduced it a lil bit,pls I need ur help,I need a faster way 2 get rid of d sun burn scar, its urgent I wud really appreciate ur help.thnx

    • Johanna Baker profile image

Johanna Mary Elisabeth Baker 2 years ago from Christchurch, New Zealand

      Hi edat,

Unfortunately you cannot change a scar but over time it will get lighter itself. For bad sun burn aloe vera gel is good and soothing. Sun burn is damage to your skin and it needs to heal. Once it has, you can try the remedies in my article but be careful to wait till your skin has completely healed first.

      Hope this helps

      Kind regards
