Luscious Lips ~

Lipstick has been a staple cosmetic product for me since as long as I can remember.

As a Make-Up Artist, lipstick was always the final touch to looks I created from the natural looks to the vibrant shaded lips.

Through the years looks change as do fashions however I have always worn what I like at that particular time, regardless of what may be deemed as "not fashionable".

That's not to say I don't experiment, I do, and often mix different lipsticks together to create different shades. A great way of using up the last bits out of your lipstick tube and making your lipstick bits into a brand new shade.

How to Make Lipstick ~

Why follow the crowds when you can create your own individual looks that suit your personality, complexion and pockets?

Making your own lipstick as in homemade lip gloss and lip balm, is easily doable, full of less chemicals and may be customized to your own preferences in texture, ingredients and color.

Since commercial lipsticks are fundamentally made up of wax, oil and emollients there are various regular ingredients that fit the bill at home.

Here is a simple basic lipstick recipe which moisturizes and protects the lips. It may then be tweaked for different textures and colors.

Lipstick Textures ~

Matte Finish - Add 1/4 tsp Bentonite Clay

Creamier Texture - Add more wax than oil

Sheer or Glossy Texture - Add more oil than wax

Lipstick Shades ~

Food Coloring:

Natural additive free food coloring used sparingly may be used and mixed together to create your own shades.

Natural Sources:

When using natural fruits and vegetables mash up skin and pulp and push through a sieve. Powders work better for color intensity. Any powders should be very fine or else will give a grainy texture. Use a mortar and pestle, coffee grinder or blender to achieve the finest form.

Red - Strawberry, Raspberry, Cranberry, Red Currant, Beetroot, Red Cabbage, Elderberry, Pomegranate, Cherry and Purple Carrot.

Pink - Dragon Fruit, Infused Hibiscus, Red Cabbage, Purple Sweet Potato, Beet Juice and Red Radish.

Purple - Alkanet Root, Beetroot, Blackberry, Blueberry, Plum, Grape and mixes of red and pink options.

Browns/ Tan - Cocoa beans, Cocoa Powder, Cold Tea, Coffee, Cinnamon and Turmeric.

Peach - Carrots, Turmeric.

Red Lipstick Recipe ~

1 tsp Beeswax

! tsp Shea Butter

1 tsp Coconut Oil

1/8 tsp Beetroot Powder

You Will Need:

1-2 lipstick tubes

Dropper (or cosmetic syringe)

Glass Jar, Bowl or Measuring Jug

Saucepan of simmering water

  • Melt the beeswax, shea butter and coconut oil in the glass jar by sitting it in the small saucepan of simmering water. This will not take long, so keep an eye on it.
  • Remove from the stove and add the beetroot powder sparingly and stir. Add more if a darker shade is required.
  • Add in any essential oil if you wish (1-2 drops only).
  • When all the ingredients are combined and the consistence is still liquid, transfer by dropper into your lip tube up to just below the top as it may expand as it begins to cool.
  • Leave aside in a cool temperature or the fridge to solidify.

Alternative Base Ingredients ~

Waxes - Carnuba Wax and Emulsifying Wax.

Butters - Cocoa Butter and Mango Butter.

Oils - Sweet Almond Oil, Olive Oil, Castor Oil and Baobab Oil.

All the waxes, butters and oils mentioned (including the ones used in the recipe) may be purchased from Mountain Rose Herbs who stock everything you need for homemade beauty products at reasonable prices and are excellent quality.

I'm more of a lip balm girl, but if I wore lipstick I would definitely try this out. I like the natural coloring options. My mom wears lipstick, so I may try to make this for her. Pinned.

Great instructions! I made lip balm when I was younger - it seems sort of similar. I never thought to make lipstick, probably because I never really wear it, but it looks like a cool project! If I did wear lipstick, I know I'd be trying this out. Pinning!

      Hi Mary,

Appreciate you taking time to comment on this. I go through phases of wearing just lipstick or gloss or even both. Some days I prefer a balm, particularly in the hot weather. I always love your ramblings so ramble away whenever you feel the need! LOL Thanks for your votes of confidence, and for pinning!

Don't ask me why but I've never really worn lipstick. Well, honestly its because everything turns red on my lips. That being said, this is a great hub. Almost all women wear lipstick and can spend a fortune AND if you're like me (with celiac) you can't wear most lipstick anyway. Sooo, leaving my rambling behind, this is a great hub!!

Voted up, useful, interesting and pinned.

You never fail to amaze me with your range of beauty product recipes! Most lipsticks on the market dry my lips out like none other. I love the idea of making my own to create something that would be a little easier on them but still allow for great colors and textures. Thanks for another awesome resource!
