How to Style Easy Updos for Every Long Hair Type

Updated on February 20, 2012

When planning for a special occasion, often the first thought after ‘What will I wear?’ is ‘How should I style my hair?’ Many choose to go for the up do hairstyle option for these events. Updos look beautiful and when they are styled right, they stay in place throughout the night. If you go to a salon to get your hair styled updos can easily cost you $50+. If you’re not ready to fork over the big bucks, your best route would be to ask a friend, or DIY (do it yourself). There are tons of videos on You Tube with step by step guides on how to style gorgeous updos. There are also some that may make you look like a rat just nested in your hair. Going through each video and looking for the right one is often time consuming and frustrating. This article is a collection of my favorite up do hairstyle videos by hair type. I hope this will help ease the stress of those endlessly searching for the perfect up do.

Hair Type

There are a lot of factors when considering your hair type.  For this article we are going to use the ponytail test.  Take a regular sized elastic band and sweep your hair up into a pony tail.  Now count the number of times the band wraps around the hair.

·         3+ times - fine hair

·         2-3 times - medium hair

·         1 time - thick hair

These are the three basic types I’ll use for this article.

Fine Hair

Fine hair is actually really great for updos.  The lightness of the hair helps the style to hold longer.  One thing that is vitally important is using products.  Applying a heavy hold mouse before drying your hair is a must for those with fine hair.  You are also going to want to get a strong hold hair spray for the finish.

Gorgeous braids!!!!

Wow! This hair style is gorgeous! Her hair isn't too long or too thick, so it's a great option for those not blessed by the hair gods....like me. Braids are become popular again, but they're not your typical french braid. Add some sparkly bobby pins or fresh flowers to dress it up even more. This style would also be great with some curled tendrils framing the face.

Gorgeous Little Twists - Double Pony Tail Updo

This video is longer and the style is a tad bit harder to do, but it is worth it at the end. I love this elegant, yet modern hairstyle. This hair do would take forever with thicker hair, but with fine hair it's pretty fast. I love the decorative bobby pins she uses on the side. It would also be simple to stick small flowers into the hair for a wedding or prom up do.

CUTE messy bun!

I can't believe how easy this style is. I think it would look cool with a thin band or ribbon around the head also. If your hair is extra long or thick this might not work as well though.

Medium Hair

Medium hair is awesome.  It's not too thick, and not too thin.  Styling is a breeze.  You won't have to use too much product, but spraying the wet hair with a spray gel before styling would help with the hold.

Pretty Braided Bun!

I absolutely love this easy, pretty bun. This hairstyle works best on medium and thick hair. The braid would be to small with thinner hair. I love the decorative feather. It's an easy way to use this trendy fad with out looking like a chicken. Leaving small tendrils of curls along the front would also look nice with this style. Awesome up do!

Beautiful Super Fast Bun

Buns are awesome in medium textured hair. I love the use of a stick in this hairstyle for added interest. I would use a prettier accessory for a more formal occasion though. It would also be a good idea to pin this bun once you are finished for extra hold.

Very Knotty!

This up do looks very cool at the end. In the video she did forget a step. After she pins the very front section, she makes a top section of hair before starting on the three pony tails. This is what she used to create the bun that the knotted pieces are styled around. This hairstyle takes more time, but is so gorgeous and different! It could also be done on thicker hair.

Thick Hair

Thick hair is so gorgeous, but not the easiest when you are wanting an updo. The weight of the hair is sometimes hard to work with. Styles that sit low on your head are a good option. Also, look for styles that are sectioned off around the head before styling. This will break up the bulk.

Double Side Buns

This up do is great because the buns are low on her head. You could also make just one big bun. This hairstyle can be dressed up by adding ribbons, flowers, or pretty combs.

LONG thick hair

Your hair wouldn't have to be quite that long to do this. This hairstyle is very complicated looking, but if you break it down into the different steps, it wouldn't be that hard. It works well for thick hair because of the many sections. Dress it up by using sparkly clips.

Polynesian Pony

This hairstyle is so cool!! Very unique. It's wonderful for thick hair because of the two pony tails. I love the addition of the flower at the end. You could choose a flower that matches the season; small poinsetta or red rose for winter, wildflowers for spring, tropical for summer, or deep colored flower for fall. I think this up do would be perfect for a beach wedding or reception! Medium hair types could also pull this off.

Remember to have fun with your hairstyles and find the right look for you.  Trying different up do hairstyles can change your look with out the scissors, and styling you hair at home can change your look with out the wallet!  Good luck and have fun!
