Whether you decide to go to the salon or bleach and lighten your hair at home, these tips will be sure to help you. Going blonde may sound like it will be an easy task that will be simple to maintain, think again. It's not always as simple as just wash and go. Once you achieve the colour you like it is so important to take care of your hair properly.

Protect Your Blonde Hair from Damage

Bleach works in your hair by removing all colour, either natural colour or colour from previous hair dyes. The process of bleaching hair can be very damaging. That is why it is important to keep your hair moisturized. If you don't provide your hair with moisture your ends will get brittle, and maybe even cause breakage. Having this kind of damage doesn't look or feel good, and no wants that. To help with this there are great products on the market you can use.

Protein for Your Hair

Your hair is made up of keratin. Keratin is a type of protein that is found in your hair, skin, nails, and teeth. When the keratin in your hair is damaged by bleach your hair will be damaged as well. Look for hair care products that specifically say they contain keratin or protein. You can buy keratin/protein shampoos and conditioners, also look for a deep conditioner. Use the deep conditioner at least once a week. Using those three products will greatly help your damaged hair.

DIY Deep Conditioner Recipes

You can also choose to make your own deep conditioner for your hair at home. That way it's all natural and you know and control exactly what you are putting on your hair.

Avacado Deep Conditioner

Keep Your Blonde Hair from Being Brassy or Yellow

Now you know how to keep you hair from being dry, you need to know how to keep it that perfect blonde. Blonde hair can tend to turn brassy or yellow looking. If this is a look your not wanting to have, then these tips can help.

Why does blonde hair get brassy and yellow you may ask. Well if you have naturally brown hair the undertones of your hair are red. These undertones are what causes the brassy colour. If you have naturally blonde hair your undertones are yellow, and this can make hair look yellow after bleaching. To help with these issues there are a few products you can use to cancel out the brassy or yellow colour in your hair.

You can buy purple or blue shampoo and conditioner, which is made to help tone blonde hair. I know this may sound odd to some but it works. If you were to look at a colour wheel it shows that the opposite colour of orange is blue, and the opposite of yellow is purple. These opposite colours help to neutralize the yellow and orange.

If you need more toning you can also go to the salon, and they can apply the right toner to your hair. Toner is a semi-perminent glaze that neutralizes brassy and yellow tones. Toners are also available to buy so you can do it yourself at home.

DIY Blonde Hair Toner

I had purchased purple hair dye previously, because I wanted a couple purple streaks. I had lots of it left over, so I used it to make my own hair toner.

What I Used:

  • hair conditioner that is white
  • Manic Panic semi-perminent hair colour cream in Ultra Violet

Squeeze conditioner into a bowl, make sure there's enough to cover all your hair.

Add a tiny drop of Manic panic to the conditioner. Mix well. You want the mixture to be a very pale purple. If you add too much it may leave a purple tinge in your hair, so be careful. When i tried this I left it in my hair overnight with a shower cap on.If you feel timid about leaving it in that long try doing it for 10 or 15 minutes. After I washed it out my hair no longer looked brassy my hair was soft and a very nice platnum blonde.
