How to Wear Combat Boots

Updated on October 3, 2016

Combat Boots are Now for Women!

Combat boots were originally designed for soldiers during war-time.  However, with its rugged, masculine but stylish charm, it has made a comeback last RTW season.  I am personally obsessed with combat boots because it's a must-have style item that can be worn out. No more trudging around on pained feet because I just had to wear my "going out" heels.  Combat boots are perfect for evening because they can easily be dressed up or down. In this edition of the "how to wear guide," I'll show you several ways to wear combat boots with style!

Combat Boots with Denim

One fun way to wear combat boots is with denim. Rachel Bilson here wears her combat boots with a sundress and casual denim jacket. (Yes, the denim jacket is also back in style.) Although she is sporting a dress, the look is overall, very casual and works perfectly for a day-time look.

Jeans, of course nowadays go great with anything. But with combat boots, especially with the taller variety, I highly recommend a tucked in skinny jean or a scrunched, straight-leg jean. How else will you be able to show off the boots!

When purchasing my first pair of combat boots, I had a hard time deciding on a tall boot versus a short one. I went with a medium-height boot because I'm petite but also because a lower boot would be easier to mix in with other outfits.

Quickie Fashion Tip

Because the combat boot style is already so masculine, don't over-do the look, because it can look cheesy.  If you're wearing black, rugged combat boots don't top that with a black top, leather jacket and ripped black jeans.  Break up the look with a pastel color, soft contrasting fabric or glitter!

Combat Boots Military Style

I know combat boots originated from the military, so why not take it back to its roots? I absolutely love the military detailing in these outfits. Olive green and leather always look fab with masculine-style boots.

When wearing a statement piece, such as the tassel-embellished Balmain jacket, be sure to keep something neutral and plain. Such a plain black tank top or a plain white tee-shirt.

I'm also not a huge fan of denim mini-shorts with heels but if you can pull it off, more power to you!

Combat Boots with Evening Wear

This is one of my favorite combat boots trends! I'm always a sucker for the perfect masculine/feminine style mix and this satisfies that completely. Wearing combat boots on the red carpet was probably a big fashion risk, but one that paid off.

The evening attire sets off the rugged look of the boots and melds perfectly. There's nothing better than a puffy ballerina dress with some dirty combat boots, as I say!

Quickie Style Note

I recently purchased my third pair of combat boots (because I was wearing them constantly), in a heel format.  Pretty much its the same laced boot look but with a stacked heel.  I am absolutely in love with them, and call still be fancy when going out!

Where to Wear Combat Boots?

I love dressing down my combat boots as well.  My go-to look has been wool tights (it is December!), a beige sweater dress with a cinched trench coat.

Purchasing

When purchasing your first pair of combat boots, I would start basic.  Get a medium-height, black pair of lace-up combat boots.  See where you go from there.

Style Tip

My all-time favorite place to wear combat boots, is amazingly, the airport. It's a fantastic way to maintain a stylish look while still being completely comfortable for traveling!  The ones I wear do have the lace up, but have a zipper on the side as well, so that its easy access during the security screening!

A fashion statement not for older women. Only the young could get away with this look. Voted up, marked interesting.
