Who Invented Acrylic Nails
In 1954, Fred Slack, a dentist, broke his fingernail at work, and invented the first artificial nail as a realistic-looking temporary replacement. After experiments with different materials to perfect his invention, he and his brother, Tom, patented a successful version and started the company Patti Nails:
Before focusing on nail products, Fred Slack III was an innovator and pioneer in the dental industry. He was in the forefront in the development of the first high impact crown and bridge materials, the first powder/liquid composite filling material, the first direct bonded orthodontic adhesives, and the first hybrid composite.
Patti Nail Company
He began working in NSI’s parent company in 1960, started by his father Fred Slack Jr., which at the time was developing and manufacturing dental products. He used his knowledge of dental technology, acquired at the University of Pennsylvania Dental Laboratory, and worked on the characteristics of acrylic polymer/monomer chemistry with DuPont, Rohm & Haas, and Imperial Chemical of UK, to name a few.

Health Risks of Artificial Nails
If fitted properly, artificial nails are usually not problematic. However long term use and poorly fitted nails can seriously damage the nail bed and hamper natural nail growth. The most common problem associated with artificial nails is a bacterial infection that may develop between the false and natural nail.
When artificial nails are applied to the natural nail surface, minor types of trauma to the artificial nails which can happen from something as harmless as scraping a nail against a firm surface can cause separation of the nail from its nail bed. This allows bacteria and fungus to potentially enter the separated area setting up an infection.
So for these reasons it is important that you get your nails done by a professional nail technician and also to have your nails removed in the proper manner also by your nail technician so as not to cause any damage to the natural nail.

Health Benefits of Nail Enhancements
Acrylic nails help conceal or fix broken, damaged, short, or bad nails. It also helps prevent people from biting their nails, breakage of nails, and protect splits. They are used when people are not able to grow the length and strength of natural nails that they desire. This problem can be solved by using certain nail techniques such as nail tipping, sculptured nails, nail wrapping, or acrylic overlays.
However Acrylic nails usually make natural nails weak, thin, and breakable when removed.

What are Acrylic Nails Made From
Acrylic Nails are made by a mixture of Liquid and Powder
- LIQUID: Is a complex mixture of monomers, cross-linkers, stabilizers, catalysts and other additives.
- POWDER: Is a mixture of polymers and copolymers that contain the initiator, colorants and other additives.
Accelerators, Initiators, Catalysts and Energy are needed by all artificial nail enhancement products. If one is missing or compounded improperly, chemical reactions will happen much more slowly or not at all.
For these reasons it is important to get your nails done by a trained nail technician as the incorrect mixture of the products can cause problems with your nail enhancement and may even harm the natural nail.

Acrylic Nail Powder
Coloured Acrylic Powder
NSI Acrylic Powder
As an option from the pink and white nails, French Tips, you may also get any coloured acrylic powder.
There are many to choose from and it is also possible to mix the different coloured powders and make your own unique colour. Or you could use the white acrylic powder to lighten a particular shade.
My favourite is to mix the Black acrylic powder with a little white. This gives a lovely shade of grey.
