Body piercing as a body art form has evolved to a whole new level. Before, body piercings were done only on the earlobes on women so that earrings may be worn. It was unusual back then for men to have earrings or studs on their ears. However, due to the wide acceptance of body piercings as an art form, numerous individuals around the world have body piercings on them. It does not matter if you are a male or female, body piercings is fast becoming part of the popular culture. There are many forms of body piercings depending on the part of the body that is going to be pierced. Piercings on the ear for example are no longer limited to the earlobes. Different parts of the body are now cites for piercings. Even the lips of a person can be pierced and fitted with a lip ring.

Piercings are becoming more and more popular especially to the more expressive groups of people because piercings allow them to express their individual styles. Whatever reason a person has for getting a lip ring, that person must know the different ways of caring for their lip ring piercing. Improper handling or cleaning of a lip ring can lead to minor to severe infections. If you have a new lip ring, you will need these following materials for properly cleaning and maintaining it.

1. Soap water

2. Towel

3. Cotton balls

4. Saline solution

5. Soft bristle brush

6. Rubbing alcohol

7. Cup or shot glass

8. Paper towel

Before handling your body piercing or lip ring, make sure to wash your hands properly with soapy water. Dry thoroughly with a clean towel. Make sure that the towel is clean to prevent germs from getting infecting your lip ring piercing. Remember that the your piercing may still be fresh and therefore, germs may easily enter the wound.

Get a cotton ball and soak it in a saline solution made by mixing ¼ cup of warm water with ½ teaspoon of sea salt. Clean the skin around the lip ring piercing with the cotton ball. Rub the surface of the lip ring with the same cotton ball. Hold the cotton ball over the pierced area of the lip for about 3 minutes.

Check your lip ring daily for the presence of plaque. Clean any plaque that accumulates on the lip ring. Removing plaque from your lip ring is best done with a soft-bristled toothbrush. If you are going to fit your lip ring for the first time, make sure that it is sanitized first. You can sanitize your lip ring by pouring two tablespoons of rubbing alcohol into a clean cup or shot glass and allowing the new lip ring to soak in the alcohol for several minutes. If your piercing is still fresh, allow the ring to air dry first on a paper towel before inserting it on your lip ring piercing. Alcohol touching fresh piercings is painful so drying the lip ring first before inserting will prevent this painful experience.

Sensibly written hub; easy to read. I still find the reversal of western and African dress and scarification (including body piercings) over two centuries quite amusing.
