How to find the perfect cut and style for your face shape

Updated on May 21, 2013

Knowing your face shape before getting your hair cut is important as certain styles will frame and flatter your face best.

Finding the right hairstyles for you depends on the shape of your face. To help you find the perfect cut and style for your face shape, determine whether your face shape is round, oval, square, long or heart shaped.

Figure out your face shape by standing in front of the mirror and tying your hair into a ponytail so that your hair is pulled back off your face. Draw an outline on the mirror around the reflection of your face using a lipstick, a bar of soap or anything that is easily wiped off the mirror. Take a few steps back to examine your drawing.

Oval face: An oval shaped face is like the shape of an egg. Many styles will suit you. You can have your hair curly, straight, short, long or in between. Keep your hair type in mind. You may want to find a cut that suits your lifestyle. For example, if you're a busy mom who is always on the go and you have very thick hair, you may find it much more manageable to opt for short or medium length hair. If you prefer having long locks, you may want to get your hair layered so that it can easily be put up in a ponytail.

Celebrities with oval face shapes: Megan Fox, Eva Mendes, Jessica Alba, Cindy Crawford, Mariah Carey, Tyra Banks

Square face: A square shaped face is squared off near the jaw. Show off your cheekbones without making your face look boxy by adding face framing layers. Because you have a square face shape which appears very defined, keep your cut and curls soft. Wavy textures look great too. If you're daring enough, you'll be able to pull off a short style.

Celebrities with square face shapes: Jennifer Garner, Sandra Bullock, Paris Hilton, Angelina Jolie, Demi Moore, Lea Michelle

Round face: Shoulder length or mid length hair suits those with a round face shape. Straight hair or soft waves are perfect textures. Avoid very short hair styles though which can overemphasize the roundness of your face. Part your hair on the side with volume at the crown of your head. This will elongate your face so that it won't seem so round. Have your bangs soft and wispy rather than blunt. Go for side bangs for a feminine, flirty look.

Celebrities with round face shapes: Kirsten Dunst, Drew Barrymore, Kelly Clarkson, Cameron Diaz, Ginnifer Goodwin

Heart shaped face: A heart shaped face is round on the sides but thin toward the chin. Help balance your features by adding fullness near the jawline. Chin or shoulder length hair will suit you best and this will also show off your nice jawline. If you prefer long hair, use a large barrel curling iron to get soft, wavy ends or simply have soft layers that start below the ears.

Celebrities with heart face shapes: Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Love Hewitt

Long face: Having bangs and having chin length or shoulder length hair suits those with a long face shape best. It will make your face look perfectly proportioned. If you prefer having long hair, add soft layers around your face. Having a side parting will make any style look great. Having curly or wavy textures will look even better!

Celebrities with long face shapes: Sarah Jessica Parker, Gwyneth Paltrow
