How to Get Sun-Kissed Blonde Curls Like Bee in "The Babysitter"

Updated on October 16, 2017

Prepare Yourself

If you aren't a blonde but you would like to be it is highly recommended that you consult a professional stylist and choose a trusted salon to lighten your strands. If you aren't sure where to go, get recommendations from friends and family. Or you can browse salons in your area and read their reviews, search on instagram, or check out StyleSeat. If you are more of a do it yourself kind of girl here's what you will need to get and maintain your best blonde ever.

1. Deep Conditioning Hair Treatment/Mask

2. Bleach and Developer (Usually comes with gloves and applicator)

3. Toner

4. Shampoo and Conditioner

Deep Conditioning your hair for 10-30 mins before starting the process is essential in ensuring less damage.

Bleach and Developer

Bleaches, also called "lighteners," are used to lift some of the natural color out of the hair, and make way for new color. Developer is the chemical that strips out your natural color. Think of the volume of your developer as the amount of lift or lightening you want to achieve. The darker your hair the higher the developer you will need. If your hair is damaged however, you may want to opt for a lower volume and then repeat the lightening process again after a few days/weeks. Start on clean, completely dry, detangled hair. When bleaching your hair remember to work quickly and efficiently. ALWAYS start at the ends of your hair because your roots will lighten faster. Use the application brush to avoid messes and coat the hair evenly. Comb through if needed. Watch Youtube tutorials if you aren't sure where to start.

Watch your hair and keep track of time to avoid over-processing.

Toner

If you want to go blonde you need toner. It is usually purple or blue tinted and it keeps you from walking away from your journey with brassy, yellowish- orange hues instead of the ashy blonde bayalage or golden girl next door locks you were looking for. Toners alter the undertone of a hair color, but do not lift the shade and the more you wash your hair the more you will need to use it. If your hair is already a nice blonde but you feel it needs a little kick then you need an ammonia based toner which will be listed below. If you aren't sure what undertone you are looking for Blond Brilliance has a great range of shades to look into, or you can try Wella Color Charm.

Shampoo and Conditioner

Using purple shampoo after processing your hair is like a security blanket to make sure the tone of your hair comes out exactly as you want it. You can even leave it on for a bit to give your hair a gorgeous metallic undertone. The conditioner you use afterwards can be any regular conditioner for color treated hair.

The Style

Grab your heat protectant, curling wand, clips, comb, and hairspray! It's time for styling.

1. For best results make sure hair is in a mostly straight state. Divide completely dry and detangled hair into however many sections you need.

2. Spray the section you will be working on with heat protectant.

3. Start in the back and wrap varying size pieces of hair around the barrel of the wand and hold for no longer than 10 seconds. If you have optional temperature controls then adjust the heat according to your hair type. Here is a guide to how that works.

4. In the movie Bee has a dynamic mix of curls and waves in her hair. To achieve this alternate the direction that you curl your hair. Pull some of the pieces out and leave others as more of a curl.

5. When you get to the front of you hair be sure to curl it away from your face.

Once everything has been curled and cooled take out all of the clipped pieces of hair and run your fingers through your hair and flip it around. If needed, take a brush and tease the roots of your hair in sections from underneath. Then use a volumizing or texturizing hair spray all over and you're good to go.
