What Is Vanishing Cream?

Vanishing cream is oil in water emulsion, oily phase in composed of stearic acid which gives a shiny and pearly appearance to vanishing cream. Emulsion is formed in situ by reaction of stearic acid with either alkali or triethanol amine to form stearate soap.

If alkali soap is formed, mixture of Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) and Potassium Hydroxide (KOH) is used because they give hard and soft soap respectively if used alone. Vanishing cream differs from cold cream in having smaller quantity of oily phase; hence it is easy to rub on skin and leaves non-greasy film on skin with glow. This combined with evaporation of water, gives cooling effect.

Since creams contain large proportion of water it tends to dry near the top of container. To prevent drying near the rim large quantity of humectants about 15% weight/weight is added to vanishing cream.

Many marketed preparation now integrate sunscreen agents, natural agents to market the product as fairness creams.

Triethanol amine 1.35%
Lanolin 4%
Propylene glycol 5%
Methyl paraben 0.18%
Propyl paraben 0.02%
Perfume Quantity sufficient to make it pleasing.
Water Quantity sufficient to make 100%

Procedure for Making Vanishing Cream:

Step 1. The oil soluble ingredients such as stearic acid, lanolin, propylene glycol & propyl paraben are mixed and heated to 70 degree Celsius in a suitable container generally borosilicate glass apparatus is used in when making on lab scale. For large-scale production Stainless steel containers are used. This makes the oily phase of vanishing cream.

Step 2. The water soluble ingredients such as triethanol amine, methyl paraben and water are mixed and heated to 70 degree Celsius simultaneously in another suitable container. This makes the aqueous phase of the vanishing cream.

Step 3. When both phases are at 70 degree Celsius, oily phase is transferred to aqueous phase in small portions with continuous stirring in manner that a homogenous emulsion is formed. Now, once the transfer is complete it is allowed to come at room temperature all the while being stirred.

Step 4. Perfume is added just before the finished product is transferred to suitable container for the consumers.

Step 5. A suitable label is pasted on the finished product. As per drug and cosmetic act the label should contain following information: -

  1. Name of the product
  2. Contents: Name and percentage of any active ingredient if added to preparation.
  3. Net Weight:  As present in the final container.
  4. Manufacturing License Number as obtained by regulatory authority of your country.
  5. Manufacturing Batch Number: As applicable
  6. Manufacturing Date – Month and year of manufacturing.
  7. Expiry Date – Month and year of expected expiry.
  8. Maximum Retail Price- As applicable.
  9. Place Of Manufacturing- The plant where it is manufactured.

      Since this formula suggests quantities in percentage, you can calculate kgs of finished product as per your requirement!
