Selecting an Engagement Ring filled with diamonds and love not anxiety

Updated on April 8, 2014

Selecting the right engagement ring could be quite enjoyable, finding the perfect engagement ring to fit your finger and your budget can cause you an unwelcomed anxiety you didn't expect when this whole exciting project began.

Many proposals occur with the engagement ring already picked out; others choose their engagement rings after they've announced their engagement. We all would love to have the lavishing large gems like lady Gaga and other Hollywood stars proudly display, but the reality is not many can afford the lavishing lifestyles we watch on our televisions day in and day out.

The first step in selecting an engagement ring is setting a budget. You are starting a whole new life which will bring with it many unexpected responsibilities, setting a budget will help you shy away from looking at the rings you cannot afford, thus eliminating some of the stress and sadness you may feel if you can't have that large bling.

The second step is finding a good reputable jeweler, the best way to start is by doing some research in your local area, ask other married couples, ask your neighbors, co-workers and friends. Once you've compiled a list of the jewelers, visit them all without making any commitments to purchasing anything until you've visited each and every one of them first.

Budget set, jeweler found, you are now ready to start selecting the best engagement ring to fit your style, comfort and budget. For me, comfort was the most important, the plan is to wear this ring regularly, my ring never comes off my finger and it has become a part of me. There's no point in going through all the hassle of selecting a ring only to have it sit and only be worn occasionally.

A little research on the internet and you can quickly empower yourself with enough information to be dangerous and ask the right questions when you are faced with the jeweler. The center diamond comes in various shapes, sizes, color and quality. You may be able to get a smaller center stone with a stunning engagement ring setting that will visually make it look larger. Any good jeweler will advise you on the various options you have to achieve your dream engagement ring goal without breaking the bank.

Many jewelers offer custom engagement ring designs, if there's nothing that took your breath away during your selection process, custom design the engagement ring you've always dreamed of, there's nothing more special than having a custom engagement ring you can call your own.

During this entire exciting, yet anxiety filled time, try to remember the purpose of this selection process, the love you share and have for each other. If you were able to get your perfect ring, that's a bonus, but I'm here to tell you that once your life begins as a married couple, new house, maybe new babies, and your life is filled with all the responsibilities that you unknowingly signed up for, all these smaller issues of selecting engagement and wedding accessories will be a thing of the past. Live, laugh and love are the important things in life that will outshine any diamond you could ever wear on your finger.
