How To Wear & Where To Buy A Women's Tutu Online

Updated on January 29, 2012

Tutu's aren't just for ballet dancers, or children playing dress-ups as fairy's. They're also a timeless classic fashion item for women, representing the ultimate in femininity.

A Tutu is the perfect skirt for parties and formal events. It can be worn as a classical feminine piece or rock-star chic - even Gothic, depending on your desire and your own fashion style.

Layered ruffles of Tulle make up a Tutu Skirt, it can be a flirty micro-mini or a farytale long ankle length skirt.

Though sometimes difficult for adults to find in store, they are easily purchased online in a variety of styles as outlined below.

Party All Night Tutu Outfit:

This black ruffled mini-Tutu with white lace trim, teamed with black stockings, long socks and high-heels is the perfect Tutu for partying the night away!

Because it's an eye-catching flowy skirt you could get away with wearing almost any of your favourite black fitted tops with it. It will look cutest with a plain black bustier top or singlet top, making it a versatile piece which you could also wear with Opaque or Fishnet stockings.

Black or other bold rich colours work best for night-clubbing in a Tutu - pale colours such as a soft pink or baby blue may look too out of place in a nightclub - and beware that pale colours could 'glow' under fluorescent lighting even reveal what you're wearing under your skirt.

Party All Day Tutu Outfit:

If you're planning to wear a Tutu during a party, concert or on a date during the day time choose a Tutu which isn't too short - and team it with a cotton singlet or T-Shirt.

A light colour Tutu is a great choice for daywear - teaming it with your own flat shoes or boots will keep it cute and modern (Try not to team shoes to match the colour of the Tutu as you may look like you just stepped out of ballet class if you do this!).

A fitted Tulle slip dress is another great choice for parties from day to night!

The Tutu Worn As A Petticoat:

A Tutu is the perfect way to dress up a flowy dress or skirt.

Just match the length with your chosen piece to give your outfit body and femininity.

Tulle Tutu's trimmed with lace edging also look great worn as a petticoat under-garment.

You don't have to match the Tutu colour to your outfit, the contrasting colour can make your outfit more exciting!

Tutu For Formal Wear:

Tutu's are just as elegant to wear to formal events such as weddings, Proms, and cocktail parties.

For most formal events it's appropriate to choose a modest knee to ankle length Tutu.

A silk, satin, beaded top, or tops with boning or ribbon will suit your Tutu for formal wear. Halter and bustier tops will also suit this look. You can accessorise with high-heels and hair accessories to further dress up your outfit.

Formal wear stores also stock Tutu Dresses - Usually a boned bodice with a layered tulle skirt.

They are also a popular choice for bridal wear.
