Leather Bags Cleaning and Care Tips

Updated on August 14, 2012

Most classic and contemporary bags are made from leather. When compared to any other material, leather imparts an aura of class and elegance to the bags. Being a natural product, it is not easy to clean and maintain leather bags as they are used most often. While you can safeguard it from accidental spills and accidents to some extent, regular care should make it last long and maintain its original grace.

Cleaning Leather

Leather bags are prone to mold especially if stored in damp places. As they wear out, leather bags can look dirty and may need regular cleaning and maintenance.

Clean and condition your leather bag several times a year. Dust, grime and body oils darken leather bags. Apply leather conditioner after cleaning to make them long lasting.

A few leather care tips should keep your leather bag with you for a long time. Moisturize your leather bag with mink oil. The leather absorbs the oil and the pores are not clogged. Mink oil not only keeps the leather clean and supple but also conditions it. Using mink oil, soften and remove the dirt and grime accumulated over the bag.

Another leather care tip is to clean the leather surface with a damp (not wet) cloth. For harder stains you may apply a little pressure (not water) to remove it. Never use cleaning products with alcohol, caustic products or turpentine to clean leather bags. This will discolor and dry out the leather further.

One good leather care tip to remove persistent stains is to apply chalk powder on the stain and let stand for 24 hours. The chalk powder absorbs the elements from the stain caused by blood and food items. Later you can dust off the chalk powder and wife with a clean dry cloth.

Store your leather bags in breathable cloth bags. Avoid storing in plastic as plastic encourages mold and bacteria growth.

Leather Laptop Carrying Case

Leather makes for excellent carry cases for laptops as it is resists tears and punctures, repels moisture, protects from heat wind and cold and is available in a wide range of colors and textures.

To maintain your laptop leather case, use only reputed leather cleaning and protection products. Apply surface protection before using for the first time and after every cleaning process. Condition the leather with a good quality conditioner several times a year. This retains the softness of the leather and prevents it from drying out. After cleaning or when it is wet or damp, dry your leather laptop carrying case at room temperature. Always store it in well ventilated cool dry place covered with a cloth bag or sheet.

Leather Care Tips

Never let your leather bags come in contact with hairspray, perfume or body sprays as these contain alcohol that dries out the leather. . Protect your leather bags from tapes and pins or other sharp pointed objects. Never expose leather to long periods of sunlight. Never use shoe cream or saddle soap and cleaning fluids on your leather bags.
