Lip Enhancement, Augmentation & Lifts

Updated on August 17, 2013

Lip Enhancement Options

Everyone wants full lips these days and there are so many methods of plumping up the lips that it is hard to know where to start.

The best advice on this issue is to know what you really would like to achieve, and also to know what your flaws really are.

Are your lips really thin? Are you battling aging issues? Is your upper lip actually too long?

Knowing what you want to fix and what your options are will help you in your quest for fuller lips and reduce the chances of a poor result and wasted money.

Easy Lip Augmentation

If you like your lips and want to make the most out of them -Lip Explosion, Lip Venom, and Luscious Lips are just what the doctor ordered. These are the best lip plumbers on the market and they actually make your lips appear fuller for hours. Brushing the lips with a toothbrush before application will create circulation and remove dead skin cells, allowing for smooth application and ultimate penetration for lip plumping.

Lip Augmentation Via Injection

If minor plumping through massage and application of lip glosses with plumping power are not enough, there are numerous injectables such as Restylane and Juvaderm, available to create added fullness with correction of wrinkles on the upper lip too.

When used in moderation; lip injections are great, however, there are numerous examples that we are all aware of that demonstrate their limitations when attempting to make a drastic change. In the hands of a highly skilled doctor or nurse, lip injections can slightly change the shape of the mouth and make it more attractive. But if you are looking for a dramatically different looking mouth, it is best to have surgery and get the look you want, rather than attempting to save money, or avoid the surgery with something "less drastic." The end result will often be very drastic. Ducky!

Injections are not permanent and will have to be touched up every 3-6 months depending on the filler you are using.

The Area That Will Be Removed During Surgery

Bullhorn Lip Lift

There are many cases in which injections are not the best answer. We have all seen overly inflated lips that look like a ducks bill that is often caused by too much filler. In that case the patient may have benefited from the bullhorn lip lift instead of injections.

This method of lip augmentation is quite possibly the best way to permanently enhance the lips. When performed by an experienced plastic surgeon it will have a natural look that gives balance to the rest of the features.

In the photo on the left, the part that is penned in the shape of a bullhorn is demonstrating where the skin is removed and then sewn back together, with the scar being concealed around the base of the nose.

The result of this procedure will leave a larger lip surface area in which the patient may apply lipstick, and the lip is all natural tissue. No lumpy, or misshapen areas that are common side effects of injecting the lips with a foreign substance. A permanent enhancement is created with this procedure unlike lip injections.

Before & After Bullhorn Lip Enhancement

Bullhorn Lip Augmentation

Sometimes this procedure is also referred to as "upper lip shortening" because the upper lip is actually reduced in order to give the upper lip fullness and a better balance of lips to nose measurement.

*** The above photo is an example of the typical result of a bullhorn lip lift. The lip in the first photo shows thinness and the area above the lip seems long and out of balance. The photo on the left side shows the improved shape, fullness and balance of the upper lip in relationship to the lower lip and nose.

A fine full face example of the bullhorn lip lift and how it can actually make the whole face appear younger, and create harmony and balance to the features.

Gull Wing Lift

Gull Wing Lip Enhancement

The gull wing lip lift is a more invasive procedure in which a thin flap of excess skin it removed from the top lip. The lip is then sewn back together, creating a fuller, tighter, and more pleasing shaped upper lip.

The above photo shows the "after" a few days after surgery. Note the stitches are still present along the lip line.

Cormer Of Mouth Lift

COML Lip Lift

The Corner of Mouth Lift or "COML" is done when the corners of the mouth droop downward. This is a sign of aging, however, some patients have this characteristic when they are young. A facelift can not correct this problem because the lateral pull of the face, as in a facelift, is not the proper angle to fix the problem of mid face sag. Moreover the point of pull being at the ears is too far away to significantly correct the mid face issues.

With the COML procedure, a small triangle of sagging skin from each side of the lip is removed and the lip is tucked in for a more uplifted and youthful appearance, as the corner of the mouth is relocated to give a "happier" expression to the mouth.

It is very important to have a physician who has performed this procedure at least 1000 times. Be sure and see many before and after photos of his patients, as if this procedure is done too aggressively the result is the "jokers mouth" that we have all seen on too many celebrities.

@ carol7777- Yes, lip injections scare me. From what I have seen, the lifts look more natural. Thank you for stopping by.

@ MizBejabbers- Yes, we have gone very extreme when it comes to what is considered beautiful these days.

@teaches12345- Thank you for the comment. I think lip lifts are very interesting because it's a minor procedure that really enhances the whole face.

I found this really fascinating to read. It is amazing how they can transform someone's looks with just a snip here and there. I am not brave enough to do it -- yet. Thanks for sharing.

What is wrong with thin lips? We are so bombarded with what is sexy and desirable from Hollywood that we will endure any kind of pain and the possibility of misfigurement to attain impossible beauty. I have seen more than one actress with lips that look like a pig's snout from the profile view. Now that is really sexy! Interesting hub, though. I'm not knocking your efforts. I just get chills when I think of some of the procedures. Thanks.

Maybe not a bad idea..However I have seen some pretty scary looking lips. For those who want to have fuller lips as long as they don't overdo it..can be good.
