Lipstick & Hair Color Choices to Enhance Your Skin Tone

Updated on March 2, 2015

Finding the best lipstick shades and hair colors to compliment your skin tone is the best way to bring out your natural beauty and radiance.

There are a few methods listed below which can help you determine what type of skin tone you have.

Here's a great testing method called the vein color test. If you have blue-colored veins in your inner wrists, you have a cool skin tone. If you have green-colored veins in your inner wrists, you have a warm skin tone.

Here's a great testing method called the metal test. If you are still not sure, try the metal test. Find a person to give you an honest opinion on how your radiance is shown more with a gold or silver necklace. When you look more radiant in gold, you have a warm skin tone. When you look more radiant in silver, you have a cool skin tone.

There is one skin tone type that is called neutral skin tone. When you notice that you have blue-green colored veins, it is a sign that you have neutral skin tone. A high percentage of African American women have this neutral skin tone, and the best attribute of this unique tone is it allows you to wear both warm and cool colors. With neutral skin tone, all colors look good, however, you most likely will sway to one side (warm) or the other (cool). For instance, a warm color will look "good" on you, yet a cool color will look "even better".

Once you have determined your skin tone type, there is another interesting factor involved with your skin tone assessment . It is called your skin's "undertone". One's skin undertone is a subdued color that modifies your skin tone. Cool skin tones mostly have blue undertones in their skin, while warm skin tones mostly have yellow undertones.

You can have cool undertones with any depth of color to your skin. In other words, you can have fair skin tone with cool undertones, medium skin tone with cool undertones, or dark skin with cool undertones. The same holds true for warm skin, which can be found in the fairest of fair and the darkest of brown skins.

Now that everyone has completed their skin tone tests, you can start choosing the complimenting lipstick and hair color shades that will bring radiance to your beautiful skin tone.

Fair Skin Tone

Lipstick Shades - Pinkish beige, cherry reds, and nude shades will accentuate the porcelain features of fair skin. Those with cool undertones should choose light mauve, light mocha, and nude shades.

Warm undertones should choose sand, shell, or nude peach. Try to stay away from lipstick shades like darker browns and yellows that can make you look "washed out".

Hair Colors - Some of the great hair colors that will compliment your fair skin tone are light honey blonde, golden blonde, strawberry blonde, golden brown, golden mid-level blonde, warm chocolate browns, auburn, dark browns, and deep chocolate.

Try to stay away from reds and colors with orange highlights. Violet, blue, and white colors can wash out your natural coloring. Too much ash coloring in your hair can make you look older, pale and drawn.

Medium Skin Tone

Lipstick Shades - Plum and raspberry compliment your pink undertones and create an overall glow. Those with cool undertones should choose rosy pink, cranberry, and pomegranate. Those with warm undertones should choose bronze, copper, and cinnamon. Try to stay away from lipstick shades that are too pale that can make you look "washed out".

Hair Colors - Light and mid-level blonde, dishwater blonde, sandy or beige blonde, platinum blonde, coffee and mid-level blonde, aubergine, mahogany and burgundy reds, blue/green dark browns would be great hair color choices.

Olive Skin Tone

Lipstick Shades - Light brown, dark berry will accentuate your olive skin tone. Since olive skin tone complexions are a combination of cool and warm undertones, similar to neutral skin tone complexions, they can wear both cool and warm undertone shades.

Hair Colors - Some of the great hair colors that will compliment your olive skin tone will be light ash blonde, dishwater blonde, sandy or beige blonde, platinum blonde, coffee and mid-level blonde, aubergine, mahogany and burgundy reds, dark browns or black, blue-black, cool ash browns, deep coffee brown, medium ash brown, raven blacks, clean blue-based reds, and fire engine red shades for a dramatic look.

Try to stay away from gold, bronze or warm red tones because these can give you a sallow look. Also yellow-based colors used on your hair and skin will blend and make you look ill, washed out, or exaggerate any yellowness in your skin.

Yellow Skin Tone

Lipstick Shades - The best lipstick shades for this skin tone type is a rich, deep brown or deep berry. Yellowish undertone lipstick shades are also complimentary to your skin tone which is similar to the brown undertone lipstick shades recommended for the medium and olive skin tones. Stay away from bright oranges and reds since they have yellow in their color mixtures.

Hair Colors - Light honey blonde, strawberry blonde, golden blonde, golden mid-level blonde, golden brown, warm chocolate browns, dark browns, and deep chocolate.

Try to stay away from red and colors with orange highlights. Violet, blue, and white colors can wash out your natural coloring. Too much ash coloring in your hair can make you look older, pale and drawn.

When you have light, medium, or dark brown skin tone, you can go in one of two directions - toward brown or purple. Try caramel or walnut colors for the daytime, and plum or wine colors for the evening time.

When you have unique blue-green colored veins, it is a sign that you are neutral skin tone The special and awesome attribute of having neutral skin tone is being able to wear warm and cool colors because you look great in both! What a treat to live in a world that offers so many beautiful colors!

Light Brown Skin Tone

Lipstick Shades - Pale to deep pink, taupe, peach, and red.

Hair Colors - Vibrant hair colors are extremely popular in these current times. Copper shades are more earthly and natural than a fiery red for light brown skin tones. Choosing copper shades also create a warm and flattering look. Keep your eye out for the word "burnt" as the color name on the package.

Medium Brown Skin Tone

Lipstick Shades - Red, medium to deep pink, bronze, magenta, and medium to deep brown.

Hair Colors - The hair color shade selection is identical to light brown and medium brown skin tones. Copper shades are also more earthly and natural looking than fiery red for the medium brown skin tones. Choosing copper shades will create a warm and flattering look. Keep your eye out for the word "burnt" as the color name on the package.

Dark Brown Skin Tone

Lipstick Shades - Deep red, fuchsia, magenta, chocolate brown, and bronze.

Hair Colors - Gold is another shade that adds new depth to dark hair. During the warmer months of the year, this shade adds a fresh light element to your hair. Keep your eye out for the words "honey" or "yellow gold" as the color name on the package.

Thanks for this post! I definitely can find that it is a struggle to find a shade that really complements my skin tone, especially throughout the year when I go from a tan/olive in the summer to fair in the winter. I haven't tried a dark berry color before, but I think I will now!

Thank you for the tips. I always get frustrated picking out lipstick colors. Your hub has really helped out. I will focus on nude, light mauve, light mocha, and cherry red. I think first I will try cherry red, because I am always worried about trying red lipsticks. They always look too harsh, but now I think it is because they had a lot of orange in them.

    Voting up and useful!
