It seems like everyday now, I run into someone needing a few ideas for tattoos. Whether it is for men or women, a tattoo is something that really needs to be thought through. Even though technology allows for some tattoos to be erased, there are many that can't. Some can be covered with the correct tattoo, but some will have to remain intact. In saying so, I urge you to think your choices through before you choose a tattoo.

For women, the butterfly tattoo and cosmic design has remained very popular. Many women choose the rainbow toned butterfly. The colors can be placed in many different hues. They can be done in two color sets, three, four, and five or higher. A popular choice is purple, violet, green, light blue, pink, and yellow. If your tattoo artist is good, this tattoo looks great on the skin. The sizes can vary, but I would prefer 3inch by 3inch design. But, the ending choice is yours. They don't look right with 5 colors that small, but two will work for those of you that prefer a smaller tattoo.

The cosmic design has became a real popular choice for women. These tattoos include the sun, moon, stars, and other universal items. Some women enjoy the sun turning into the moon in a one piece tattoo. This is usually done with a lite hue of the natural colors. Even for men, I have seen an increase in cosmic design tattoos. One that has became popular is the zodiac designs. The background is done in black and your zodiac star design is imprinted in shades of white and blue. For example, the star pattern is placed on the background. Your star sign's character is placed inside with lite shades of your character's basic colors. It can also be done with the star pattern and you birthstone color. Once again, these are just new ideas to help you decide on your tattoo.

Men and women both have positive remarks for the cosmic designs. This has just recently caught on and the feedback has been very positive. Another design that has caught popularity lately is the gambling design. It has a vast variety of items from playing cards, poker chips, dice, cash, pool table items, poker table, and card designs such as diamond and spades. Many people around here are into gambling and they have placed their hobby and talents in body art. I saw one that had a full flush and flames surrounding it. It is placed in front of a sideways skull with a burning candle. Poker chips and cash are stacked on both sides with a foundation of red velvet. It was a great tattoo. These items can be placed in a variety of ways.

Another design for women is the hummingbird. I am sure it has been used before and many times over, but the colors on this one were quite incredible. It was done in a sky blue and shade of yellow. Silver was used to place the wing action. It looks great on the lower back and also on the side. For a shoulder tattoo, I would suggest the dolphin design. It looks much better on the shoulder then anywhere else. Some of them add blue to catch the water, while others are multicolor.

Now, if you add a background or landscape, the dolphin is a great lower back tattoo. The silver and blue in the tattoos work very good together as you can see above. Personally, I believe water should always be used to portray the background. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing bad about single tattoos. But many times, it can be dull and unattractive. Tattoos are meant to be colorful and they are basically art, well body art. I believe more colors look better. I would advise you to add at least 3 colors, but it is your choice.

Tribal designs have always been very popular amongst men. They look real good as an arm sleeve or full body tattoos. Most men decorate the arms and the chest. Some get matching tattoos on both arms and some just do one side. There really is no personal preference because both usually look good. The same color can be used, but I would advise different shades of the constant color, possibly add a colored outline.

Chinese designs have been popular for awhile among men and women both. They usually get their name written in Chinese or the name of a loved one. Plus, if the name isn't long, they can usually be covered up real easily. Dragons are also used in this culture. The dragon is usually the front piece in some type of background or landscape.

Flower designs are popular among women. They are very popular in Hawaii and in the western civilization. Tropical flowers are used the most. They are usually placed as a front piece with plants and trees as a background. I have seen a few that have waterfalls in the background and they looked really good.

The most important thing to consider is not the tattoo itself, but making sure it is the one you want. I can't stress this enough. Many people rush into getting a tattoo and they end up with one that they do not like. Make sure you take the time to look around. Some people design their own tattoos or paste together different types into one singular tattoo. They are many designs, items, and backgrounds that can be used. In closing, just make sure you give it a second thought when you feel like you have found the right design. The people who do the research are usually happier with the outcome and the choice of their tattoo. Remember, not all tattoos can be erased or covered, so choose carefully.

F, always good to hear from you my friend. I hope all is well and thanks for the expertise. Absolutely. I would agree, I also believe that is why you see this style a lot even in this era. The quality is very good now a days. These tattoo artist of today are the exception. They are just like artist, except on the body. It is amazing what some of them can do.

thelyricwriter: Interesting what has been said about the changing and development of styles. This fact is probably related to why many people are willing to consider them today that might not have done years ago. Seems like the quality of a lot of the artwork has improved over the years also.

homesteadbound: 'I have thought at times I would like to get a tattoo but have never done so. My husband is against it. I really like the tribal tattoos on guys. I saw a couple butterfly tattos I liked in your hub. Very nicely done.'

In a non-committal way, did you guys ever visit a parlor together, and see a selection of the ink artwork? Also, you say you like tribal tattoos on guys but did you know that tribal designs are becoming increasingly popular with ladies, too? (as are faith related designs)

I always have enjoyed watching them play. It reminds me of the old school games from the past. I agree, they are masters of discipline. Army and Navy always is a game worth watching. They are out there playing with heart, not for future checks. That is something special.

You owe it to yourself to watch the Army/Navy game. They almost never have great quarterbacks and they are slow and too small compared to SEC or Big 10 or West Coast. Sometimes they beat a great team. They use old fashioned running games and are hyper-disciplined. When they play each other it is the most intense rivalry around.

Hey there WD Curry. It really is amazing, among my generation, that tattoos were illegal back in that time, which really isn't that long ago. If you had tattoos, you were looked down on. I have even heard the phrase, "that is the devil's work". I love football. I don't follow Army and navy, but I follow this game. The atmosphere is electric. I have seen a trend forming in college athletics. More and more tattoos are being seen and like you say, styles change. What you get is what you get, there is no changing that fact. There are many people these days that do tattoos on the side per say. I knew a guy that basically did his practice work as real tattoos. They seemed to like it, which this was a few years back. None the less, I would say that they regret it. Thank you for your expertise and have a great day.

When I was growing up, the only place you could get a tattoo was in the seedy part of a navy town. They were illegal in most states. When I was at Annapolis, it was almost forbidden for an officer to have one unless he had come up through the ranks. Now, if you watch the Army/Navy game, quite a few players have tattoos. Young people think they are cool. There is still a stigma among the older generations.

I am an artist (known regionally) and I was asked by the Brevard Cultural Alliance to judge a tattoo contest as part of a fund raiser. I had a blast. The art was incredible. I talked with several of the artists and got the lowdown on modern needles and technique. No one cared if I didn't want to get a tattoo. It was just something they were into. The judging was hard. Everyone agreed with our choices (for the most part).

The thing that concerns me is that trends change. Taste in art and design change. The stuff I did in art school used to blow people away, because it was psychadelic and bizarre. Now, it is more conservative. I had an old award winning piece out the other day. I thought about framing it. No . . . I can't look at that everyday.

It's all good. I will hire you with a tattoo, but like lyricwriter says . . . be sure . . . and be sure you get the best artist you can find.
