Teens Have Fun With Makeup

Makeup Craft ~

Teenage girls are constantly intrigued and interested in makeup, it is a fact.

From the minute they can walk they have been intrigued by lipsticks and colour cosmetics found in their mother’s bedroom.

I have been that same teenager who has dived into my mum’s lippy and eyeshadows making a holy mess of products but having oh such much fun.

In my late teens I took that fascination to another level and channelled it in a way that was to be my profession as a Make Up Artist, both in a freelance capacity and as an Artist for several established Cosmetic Companies.

Makeup and Teenage Girls ~

Teens and in particularly the teenage girls are the ideal group to introduce makeup craft ideas to.

They are keen to learn and they are probably not earning a wage so would therefore love to know how to make their own lip glosses, cream eyeshadows and numerous other colour cosmetics and skin care products.

Teenagers cover 8 different ages, 13-19 and different cultures will have different views on makeup wearing and when it is appropriate to start wearing, if at all.

I have two nieces who fall into the teenage girls’ bracket, so having done makeup crafts and making them up for different occasions, I am very aware of the different needs of both taking on board their personalities, age and interests.

With this in mind I have put together some great ideas you can do with your teenagers on a one to one, for birthday party ideas and for gift making.

Teens love giving presents to friends and for Christmas these will make great ideas for them to make for friends and family which will save you and them money. How cool for your teens to be able to give their female relations some handmade makeup crafts!

Word of Caution - Always do a skin test on the inside of the elbow with a little of the finished product if you are very sensitive, allergy prone or usually wear hypo-allergenic products. As with all homemade products if in doubt, do seek your doctor's advice first.

How to make Lip Gloss with eyeshadows, honey and cooking oil

Luscious Lip Balms ~

Teenage girls love lip balm so I have put together a selection of different flavourings that are easily put together by teens or teens with parental supervision. The ingredients are easily sourced at your local pharmacy, supermarket or health food shop if not already in your kitchen cupboards. They will only take 5-10 minutes to make so are ideal to include for a small group of teens.

Strawberry Shortcake Lip Balm ~

Ingredients:

3 tbsp cocoa butter

1 vitamin E capsule

½ tsp cooking oil

2-3 menthol crystals

8-10 drops strawberry flavoured oil

You Will Need:

1 small plastic container with lid

I small plastic microwavable bowl

Microwave

Spoon/Spatula

Method:

  • Put the cocoa butter in the bowl and melt in the microwave on a medium setting for 10 – 20 seconds, taking care not to burn.
  • Add the drops of strawberry oil and stir until melted and mixed. You may return to the microwave for 10 seconds or so if you need to.
  • Add the oil and menthol crystals and stir well.
  • Cut open the vitamin E capsule into the bowl and stir well.
  • Pour lip balm or spoon it into the container and let rest for 10 minutes before closing lid.

Chocoholics Choccy Lip Balm ~

Ingredients:

3 tbsp cocoa butter

5 chocolate chips

1 vitamin E capsule

¼ tsp cooking oil

You Will Need:

1 small plastic container with lid

1 small plastic microwavable bowl

Spoon/spatula

Microwave

Method:

  • Melt the cocoa butter the same way as in the Strawberry Shortcake Lip Balm.
  • Add the chocolate chips and stir until melted. Use microwave for a few seconds if needed.
  • Add in the oil and stir. Cut open the vitamin E capsule and stir in well.
  • Pour the lip balm into the container and let rest for 10 minutes or so.

Other Lip Balm Suggestions:

  • Apple and Cinnamon
  • Bubblegum
  • Vanilla
  • Chocolate and Orange

Tips:

Apply Lip Balms with a lip brush or a cotton bud to transfer the balm to the back of your hand or on to the lips. Then use little finger to spread it across the lips.

Cream Eyeshadows ~

These are another must have for all teens wearing makeup. What a great way of salvaging old or broken powder shadows, which we have all had at one time or another. Cheap and dead easy to do, cream eyeshadows are ideal for young fresh wrinkle free teenage skins.

Ingredients:

Powder eyeshadow

Petroleum jelly

You Will Need:

Small clean container with lid

Tweezers, spoon or something you can use for removing powder from its compact or container

Clean Popsicle stick or toothpick that may be used for mixing eyeshadow

Method:

  • Start removing your powder out of its compact and into the new container carefully using a tweezers or spoon.
  • Add a very small amount of petroleum jelly and mix together. Always add small amounts as it is much easier to add than take away, the golden rule of cosmetics.
  • When you have mixed the two together evenly, your cream eyeshadow is ready!

Tips:

  • An old contact lens case makes a perfect container, just wash and dry thoroughly before using.
  • To help the cream eyeshadow last on the eyes you can use a primer underneath before applying OR
  • Dab the eyelids with water; allow drying, and then apply the eyeshadow.
  • Use cream eyeshadow sparingly, building up the color intensity.

Magic Mascara ~

What woman (and many men, I may add) does not feel naked without her mascara? I for one, it would be my one color cosmetic I would bring to a desert island, no question! Running out of mascara has seen me use liquid eyeliner instead in a panic of feeling naked without my lash enhancers.

Teenage girls adore mascara and it is a magic makeup product that instantly lifts a face above all others in my opinion and experience. Here is my recipe for never being caught out like I was that will be a sure fire hit with the teens.

Ingredients:

Petroleum Jelly

Eyeshadow (black, brown, navy, turquoise or any vibrant color you wish to create a unique look)

You Will Need:

Small container with lid

Glass, cup or small bowl

Popsicle stick, toothpick or even a chopstick for mixing.

Mascara Wand

Method:

  • Using a teaspoon, take a small amount of petroleum jelly (about a grape size or small coin) and put into your bowl.
  • Add your eyeshadow carefully, scraping out the amount you require.
  • Mix together well and blend evenly.
  • Pop on your lid.
  • Use an old clean mascara wand to apply or buy new wands in a packet.

Tips:

  • Never throw out old mascara wands. Wash and clean them keeping them for separating lashes or for de clumping mascara on your mascara wand. Always clean afterwards to prevent any cross infection. Mascara’s are one cosmetic item that should never ever be shared with anyone else. Eye infections are easily transferred.
  • If your mascara tube feels solid or dry, make sure it is tightly sealed before popping it into hot water holding the top of it. This will help loosen any product to become more liquid.
  • Lightly brush a little bit of lose face powder on the lashes before applying mascara. This gives a thicker look to the lashes.
  • If you have small container without a lid use saran wrap to cover it and keep it airtight.

Skin Care is Important for Teens

Teenage Skin Care in 4 simple steps ~

The importance of skin care cannot be more stressed concerning the teenage years.

No they don’t need an extensive or time consuming skin care routine but they do need the basics. Teen skin invariably shows the hormonal changes the body is undergoing and outbreaks of the dreaded spots frequently occur in boys and girls. Using products that are mild but effective will stand them good stead in later years and is vital if they are wearing makeup.

Cleansing the skin is the first step. Rather than turning to store bought products, a great selection of homemade cleansers are available using natural chemical free ingredients, often found in the home or readily available in supermarkets, health food stores or pharmacies.

Skin toners or tonics are great for removing the final traces of makeup, removing excess sebum or oil and for freshening the skin. Always choose ingredients that are suitable for your skin type. If you have oily skin tomato, cucumber and witch hazel are excellent to use. Dry skins need more oil so honey, chamomile and roes water work a treat.

Skin exfoliating once a week or every second week is a great bonus treatment for teens. This rejuvenates the skin keeping it renewed with fresh skin cells. The texture of the skin is instantly improved and noticeable. Something as simple as sugar and tomato combined makes a quick, easy and effective exfoliate for teens to make.

A light moisturizer is important for teens to start using daily. This helps keep the skin supple, nourished and conditioned during their active lives. Expensive anti aging creams are not required as there are great skin and health benefits in products found at home that are more than sufficient.

A facial mask is a treatment that does not have to be every week. A good idea is to alternate with a skin exfoliating cream. A mask can be made for any skin type using a huge amount of different and accessible yummy ingredients such as strawberries, honey, cream and yogurt. Masks will deep clean the pores helping to rid the skin of impurities and grime that cleansers may not reach.
