Makeup Tips to Appear Younger

Updated on September 7, 2012

Still rocking the same look and using the same makeup tricks from high school? You might be stuck in a makeup rut and looking a lot older than you should be. At this moment we all find ourselves at different ages, but one thing is true for all of us. We are younger right now, at this moment than we will ever be again. Here are a few tried and true tips for looking fresh and youthful for as long as possible.

Starting from the top we will begin at the hair. Any hair style you choose is fine, as long as it looks healthy, shiny and seems full. For example, if you like to keep a longer hairstyle but notice that the last few inches of your hair appear thin or stringy, it may be too long for you.

Now we will move on to one of the most important areas of your face, eyebrows. Badly shaped brows can add years to your appearance. Brows that are too close together can make you appear angry, brows that are too high up on the forehead can make you appear surprised. Eyebrows should have a natural shape and a symmetrical arch that helps to frame and balance the face. If you suspect your brows could use a makeover but do not know where to begin seek the advice of a professional for shaping. Once they set the shape, it is easy to maintain by cleaning up wherever stray hairs grow over time. If your eyebrows are bushy or have wiry hairs growing this way and that, a little trim might be all you need. If your eyebrows are too thin, you may have to fill them in. Avoid drawing heavy or severe lines, a series of feathery lines, drawn with very thin brush will look natural, also you might want to look into purchasing an eyebrow kit. There are so many types available now, these can help you achieve a good shape and properly fill eyebrows.

It is said that eyes are the windows to the soul, unfortunately, they also start to age first. In order to have your eyes look as young as you feel less makeup is necessary. If you have been a fan of liquid eyeliner for years, it may be time to say goodbye, the hard line that liquid creates is too harsh. Eyeliner pencils will work best, particularly if you use a dark color to line the top lid and a lighter softer color to line the bottom. Unless you have unusually large eyes, you should avoid lining the inside of the eye, particularly on the bottom, since this will make your eye appear smaller and it will accentuate the skin directly under your eyes. Mascara should also be used sparingly and mostly on the top lashes, particularly if your eyelashes have become sparse. If you want to look nice for a special occasion, false eyelashes might be a great idea. If you’ve never tried applying false eyelashes, you should practice using them before your event, it takes a little practice.

The wrong eye shadow can also make you appear older. Avoid glittery eye shadows completely and if you have crows’ feet avoid using light colored and shimmery eye shadows that will highlight that outer eye area. The powder will settle into the creases and in a few hours those little wrinkles will appear magnified. To brighten the eyes, apply light colored highlighting shades to the inner corners of the eye and over the brow bone.

Brightening up the complexion is another way to freshen your look. Luckily, with the introduction of BB Creams to the market this is easy to do. There are so many brands and price points for this new technology that you can basically pick whichever you like. Most of them address the same skin concerns, discoloration, dryness and dull skin. A BB Cream will transform your skin in seconds. The skin looks more even toned, smooth and has a dewy radiant quality. I find that you have to reapply after about 3 hours or so, but it is worth it. Another added bonus is that most of the have a built-in SPF which protects you from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays.

The wrong lipstick can also make you appear older than you are. Very dark colors can make you appear harsh and if you have vertical lines around your mouth, the color can slowly bleed into those lines. The best lipstick shades are soft colors just a few shades off from your natural color. The easiest way to determine your natural color is to check the inside of your lip, you can go a few shades warmer or cooler. If do you have vertical lip lines, get a lip pencil that is either the same color or a little lighter than your lipstick color, outline your lips with the lip liner pencil and then use the lipstick to fill in the lips, avoiding your already outlined lips. If your lips are very thin, skip the lipstick and liner and use a gloss or tinted balm.

Finally, the last thing important detail that makes you appear older is facial hair. For some of us it grows so slowly and quietly that one day we look in the mirror we are shocked to see hair sprouting in various places. For some of us it is something we have dealt with most of our lives, the dreaded moustache or few stray hairs on the chin. For all of us however, as we age we will see more and more hairs where there were none before. The best way to get ahead of this is by purchasing a magnifying mirror. This is a useful tool for eyebrow maintenance and for examining the skin from time to time. For just a few stray hairs a quick tweeze can take care of the problem, if you have more than that waxing, bleaching or depilatories might be more effective.

So if you are looking in the mirror and starting to think you appear older or maybe you just look tired, try making a few changes to your makeup routine. Before you decide to call a surgeon or see a dermatologist, try incorporating some of these simple and easy techniques to your day. Unfortunately, many people do not try making simple changes and make the mistake of going for surgical treatments or getting injected with botox or fillers before they really need to. Take an honest look at yourself and give some of these tips a try. A little time and practice is all it takes to change your makeup application technique. You may be surprised about how easy it is to freshen your look.
