The Purple Lipstick Trend

Cosmetic brands all the way from high end to fringe and indie names have been introducing their own shades of bright purple lipstick as well as other "less wearable" shades. The list of companies with notable contributions to the purple lipstick arena span a motley assortment of brands such as Illamasqua, MAC, Kat von D, Lime Crime, Urban Decay, Colourpop, Lunatick Cosmetick Labs, and Medusa's Make-Up. Drugstore brands, however, have remained conspicuously absent, preferring to remain tediously bland -- until now. Maybelline has introduced not one, but two entries into the domain of brightly colored purple lipstick.

Please Note:

Apologies for the quality of the lip swatch images in this article. I have terribly thin lips. I did my best to pucker in each photo in order to show the color to the best of my ability.

Color Sensational Creamy Matte - Vibrant Violet 681

The Color Sensational Creamy Matte line includes 20 lipsticks in its permanent line including Vibrant Violet, the shockingly bright purple shade that stands out from the rest of the pack.

Pigmentation -

Vibrant violet is highly pigmented, going on vibrantly and fully opaque in a single swipe.

Consistency -

This is a creamy matte lipstick that goes on smoothly.

Wear Time -

I found that Vibrant Violet wore for about five hours before needing serious touch-up or reapplication.

Vision in Violet

Color Elixir by Color Sensational - Vision in Violet

The Color Elixir by Color Sensational line includes 20 shades of highly pigmented gloss that each come in an attractive lipstick-like container with a doe foot applicator. Vision in Violet is a stand out color in the line.

Pigmentation -

Vision in Violet is a very highly pigmented glossy "elixir," going on vibrantly and nearly fully opaque in a single swipe. It can easily be built up to full opaquity.

Consistency -

This is not a sticky gloss and applies smoothly with the doe foot applicator.

Wear Time -

Vision in Violet lasts for two to three hours before needing touch up or reapplication.

Combining the Two

While both look good worn separately, they really shine when combined together.

A single layer of Vibrant Violet matte lipstick with a layer of Vision in Violet elixir brushed over the top gives an extremely pigmented bright purple glossy lip that really pops.

This combination lasts for several hours of wear before needing to be refreshed.

Price Point

Lipsticks in Maybelline's Color Sensational Creamy Matte line typically retail for about $7.99 each, and its Color Elixir by Color Sensational gloss can typically be found selling for between $6.99 to $8.99.

This makes Vision in Violet and Vibrant Violet some of the most affordable bright purple lipsticks that are currently available.

How Maybelline Stands Up Against Other Vibrant Purple Lip Products

So, how does Maybelline stand up to its opponents?

For the sake of comparison, I will exclude liquid lipsticks in this analysis and only focus on lipsticks and glosses since Maybelline (sadly) does not have a purple liquid lipstick.

In terms of pigmentation, Maybelline's purple lipstick is as good or better than their competitors. It is as vibrant as more expensive brands (such as Lime Crime) and far exceeds the color pay-off of brands of similar price (such as NYX's Wicked Lippies). Vision in Violet elixir also stands out as a remarkably opaque lipgloss, offering more color payoff in a single applicator swipe than Urban Decay's Bittersweet High-Color Lipgloss.

In terms of consistency, Maybelline's lipstick may not be quite as creamy as MAC's Heroine or a Kat Von D Studded Kiss lipstick, but it is also $8, not $17 or $21. When compared to comparably priced products like those of Colourpop or NYX, its consistency is far creamier and again is the clear victor. Color Elixir's consistency goes on even and does not feel sticky, unlike many similar glosses.

The Verdict

Considering the reasonable price and easy accessibility of these Maybelline products right there in your local drugstore, Vibrant Violet and Vision in Violet are great ways to rock purple lips.

Unless you're satisfied with the same boring old palette of reds and nudes that have been the drugstore stand-bys for a century, you should add these to your collection.

Wow, I remember wearing purple shades of lipstick in the 80's. So cool that it is coming back, however I am now 49 years old. I don't think I could pull this off. Maybe it is for the younger one like teenagers and early twenties. Still love the shades. Thanks for the memories.
