Men In Lingerie: How To Choose Your First Lingerie - A Beginner's Guide To Lingerie

Updated on October 13, 2009

If you're relatively new to wearing lingerie, then it can be a fairly confusing realm. There are so many different kinds of lingerie, and then within those kinds of lingerie there are a myriad of styles to chose from. When you get all this information thrown at you at once, the effect can be a little like being lost in a forest of lacy satiny garmentry, not an unpleasant prospect for sure, but one that can be very confusing when you just want to take one or two trees home.

If you're just starting out with lingerie, there are a few simple pieces that you can purchase for relatively little money and maximum reward. Here are a few suggestions for picking out lingerie that you will be happy and comfortable with.

The rule of thumb is this: Start At The Bottom And Work Your Way Up

In this case, the bottom could be a pair of stockings, or a pair of panties, depending on your interpretation (see how easily complication creeps in!) If you opt for a pair of stockings, choose a size larger than you think you'll need. Stockings that are a little on the large side can be pulled up, stockings that are too small are a nightmare and will not feel good or sexy at all, especially when you have the gusset sitting just above your knees. A one piece pair of stockings is a good place to start, you don't need to get into garter belts and thigh highs, stay ups and all the rest of it just yet. Unless you want to of course.

A nice full brief panty is also a good first choice, especially if you're a tactile man who likes the sensation of smooth material against your skin. Bikini cut and thong panties might look more exotic, but for sheer coverage, feel, and simplicity, it really is hard to beat a full brief. This cut of panty is also more forgiving of the extra space your man tackle requires.

A camisole is also a nice starter piece for a man who wants to experiment with lingerie. Easier to fit and wear than a bra, and oftentimes much more comfortable, a camisole will cover your torso with smooth silky sensations. If you get it in a light color you may even be able to get away with it under your regular clothes, which can turn even a mundane outing like running down to the shop for some milk into a naughty little adventure.

Wearing full length stockings, panties and a camisole, you will be covered from head to toe in lingerie, and very simply too. Wearing these items should give you a comfortable and sensual experience, and also help point you towards other types of lingerie you might like. For example, perhaps you like the feel of the camisole but wish it was a little tighter. Well a bustier might be a good choice for you. Or maybe you like the panties, but you'd like to show a little more cheek. In that case, a thong might be a nice addition to your wardrobe.

Start out slow and build up as you come to learn what you like and what you don't like. These basic items serve another purpose in that they will help you determine your size for future purposes, something you certainly won't regret when it comes to spending bigger money on more pricier items.

Girdle.guy, I do very much the same. Putting on my girdle - mostly obg with stockings - is the first thing in the morning after showers. I feel so good in it. And during long days at the desk or in the car I like the support it gives to my back. The feeling oft the stockings on my legs is a nice surplus.

I started with my mothers girdle and stockings long years ago. I was simply fascinated by the sheer material of the stockings. Then I started to enjoy the feeling of the girdle. Later I switched to tights. Today I wear tights occasionally but my love for the obg with stockings never vanished. So most days I wear my girdle and stockings under my male suit. And as often as possible I add a bra. Ok once in a while you get a strange look mostly from women but that´s no longer a problem for me.

Those are some very nice tips. I started with thongs back in the day because those are my favorites. Later I got a bra.

Then some time later I got some usual panties and a garter with stockings. I also got a babydoll.

My most recent purchase are some bikinis plus a bikini bra.

      I still need a camisole^^

Bombi, I agree with you. A couple of years ago I worked up the nerve to ask a sales clerk that I wanted to buy a bra and panty set for myself. Not only did she not even blink, but told me she had many male customers that bought for themselves. She took me to the changing room, measured me and I spent a long time with her finding bras and panties (and more) to try on. I believe many suspect who you are buying for based on size and maybe even styles. With that said, I have never had a clerk ever make anything like a snide comment to me. Most seem more than willing to go that extra "mile" to help you.

Hope, thanks for the advise. I would say that trying a pair of panties is a good introduction to lingerie for a man, there are so many choices. Figureing out your size can take a couple of trys but once you do a wide range of styles are available.

A camisole is a good choice as well. It can be worn as an undershirt and not as obvious as wearing a bra. For a man finding out your size can be hit or miss. there are some on line sites that can help or you can go to a thrift shop and get a couple of different size bras inexpensively to try to find what fits best.

When I first started wearing lingerie I wasted a lot of time and money buying things because they looked nice but when I got them home they fit poorly. If you have the courage it's best to have a fitting so you know it will fit. Most sales associates are very helpful so take a chance and have a discussion with them so they know it's for you.
