How to Minimize the Appearance of Large Pores on Your Face

Pores are necessary to keep your skin hydrated and healthy, but in some cases, individuals struggle with facial pores that appear too large. Pores are more noticeable when they become clogged with oil, infected or dilated. People with naturally oily skin are more likely to experience enlarged pores, as are people who spend a lot of time in the sun. Decreased elasticity in the skin, which is typically caused by the normal aging process, can cause the pores to appear larger than they really are. Blackheads are also a primary contributor to large pores. When pores are clogged with bacteria, oil and dirt, their diameter expands. Regardless of the cause, it isn't possible to shrink large pores, although you can minimize their appearance with proper skin care and a few effective home remedies.

Practice Proper Skin Care and Hygiene

Washing your face twice a day, once in the morning and again before bed, can help keep your pores free of dirt, oil and bacteria, which lead to the development of blackheads. Use a mild facial cleanser that contains retinol for the best results, such as Skinceuticals Simply Clean Pore-Refining Gel Cleanser. Avoid harsh soaps and detergents that aren't indicated for use on the face. Follow with a  gentle facial moisturizer to prevent dryness, if necessary. Keeping your skin as clean as possible at all times will go a long way towards reducing large pores.

Exfoliate to Keep Pores Clean and Clear

Exfoliation also helps minimize the appearance of large pores, providing both instant and long-term results. If you're short on cash, purchase an inexpensive facial scrub and use according to the manufacturer's directions three to five times a week, preferably just before washing and moisturizing your face in the morning. You can also make your own facial scrub using a variety of kitchen staples. Make a simple facial scrub for large pores by combining 1 tbsp. granulated sugar, 1 tbsp. honey and 1 tsp. lemon juice. Use a washcloth to rub the mixture over your face, then rinse with tepid water.

If you can afford it, a trip to your dermatologist for a microdermabrasion treatment can work wonders for large pores. Microdermabrasion is a facial treatment in which the doctor gently scrubs away the top layer of dry skin to expose the soft, healthy, fresh skin beneath.

Cover Large Pores With Makeup

You can use cosmetics to help cover up numerous facial flaws, including large pores. Use the following routine for the best results:

  1. Use a face primer, such as L'Oreal Paris Studio Secrets Professional Magic Perfecting Base, to prevent your foundation from soaking in and clogging your pores.
  2. Allow the primer to dry completely, which generally takes no more than 5 minutes, and apply your normal foundation with a makeup sponge or foundation brush if you use mineral makeup. A cream or cream-to-powder foundation, such as Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Cream Foundation, works best for hiding large pores.
  3. After applying the primer and foundation, apply a light dusting of translucent powder to further mask large pores and even out your skin tone.

Use Home Remedies for Large Pores

In addition to keeping your skin clean and masking your pores with makeup, you can also try some of the following home remedies to minimize large pores. These treatments are wonderful for your skin and will leave your face healthy, soft and smooth. It may take numerous treatments before you begin to see results in your pores, however, so have patience. If you continue as directed, you will minimize your enlarged pores over time.

  • Buttermilk Enlarged Pores Treatment – Wash your face as usual at night, then soak an absorbent cloth in buttermilk. Dab the buttermilk all over your face and allow it to dry completely, which takes about 20 minutes. As it dries, the buttermilk tightens your pores. Rinse off with cool water and apply a gentle moisturizer. Repeat this treatment every night for a week for the best results. If you don't have buttermilk, you can use plain, whole yogurt for a similar effect.
  • Rosemary Steam for Large Pores – Rosemary has an astringent effect that helps tighten the pores, minimizing their appearance. Bring a pot of water to a rolling boil, add a few tablespoons of dried rosemary (you can use the rosemary from your kitchen spice rack if necessary), and remove the pot from the heat. Drape a towel over your head and position your face above the pot to catch the steam. Gently steam your face for 5 to 10 minutes. Wash and moisturize afterward. Repeat three times a week.
  • Witch Hazel Astringent to Minimize Pores – Witch hazel is a powerful natural astringent that can help temporarily reduce the appearance of large pores. You can purchase witch hazel extract at your local drug store or purchase it online. Combine 1 part witch hazel and 1 part water, and apply directly to your skin after washing with a gentle cleanser. Allow the solution to dry for about 5 minutes, and then apply a moisturizer to prevent drying. Repeat three times a week to daily, depending on the severity of your condition.
  • Lemon Juice Large Pores Treatment – Just like witch hazel, lemon juice is a strong natural astringent that can help minimize the appearance of enlarged pores for a short time. Freshly-squeezed lemon juice works best, but you can use the bottled variety if necessary. Simply combine equal parts juice and water and apply directly to your skin just after cleansing. Follow with a moisturizer and repeat the treatment each day, or as needed.
  • Homemade Facial Mask for Large Pores – You can always buy a facial mask formulated for tightening pores, but if you're strapped for cash or just like to make your own cosmetics, you can create your own large pores treatment at home. Combine equal parts oatmeal and orange juice, and mix until you have a thick, paste-like consistency. Apply directly to your skin, leave on 30 minutes and rinse with cool water. Follow by cleansing and moisturizing. Repeat up to three times a week. You can also use beaten egg whites and honey, or yogurt, ground almonds and lemon juice.
