It is very interesting to invest money properly, and when making big investments or life changes they should be made with your mate.

Designer Handbag

Today is my 3rd anniversary at Hubpages. I received an email from Hubpages informing me of the anniversary and suggesting that the appropriate 3rd anniversary gift is made of leather. A new designer handbag or briefcase would be in order.

I don’t have any need for a new briefcase but how could a woman have too many purses? They can’t! Most women carry a large number of necessary items that they just might need at any given moment. We realize most men do not understand our reasoning and that is okay. Of course, a designer handbag is a great choice and also a fashion statement,

Brief History of Purses

Back in the fourteenth century men and woman both carried small pouches, usually made of crude leather. They used the pouches for seeds, religious items and medicines. In the fifteenth century a purse was a gift to the bride from the groom and they had ornate embroidery with jewels quite often. In the seventeenth and eighteenth century women often used pockets that were separate from their dress but hung on their waistband underneath their skirt.

In the early nineteen century women the reticule became poplar. It is a small, decorated bag similar to today’s evening bags. Women typically carried some smelling salts, a needle with thread in care of a tear, possibly a scent bottle. In the early 1920’s, the first handbags that are similar to those used today appeared on the scene.

Fun Facts about Women and Purses

Statistics show the number of women willing to spend $150 or more on a handbag is 1 in 10, but if they could only splurge on one designer item only 9% would choose shoes.

A Hermes Birkin handbag sold on Ebay for $24,500! This shows that there is certainly a segment of the population that can afford and will spend a large amount of money on that special purse.

The Man Purse does have some negative connotations; however, back in the 1800’s purses were small and only carried by men for coins. Man bags are certainly more popular now.

The average woman has 6 handbags (guess I’m not average because I have more).

The average amount most women spent on their last handbag is $42, and the average weight is 3 pounds, (of course that is empty). When you add all the necessities most women tend to carry in their purses, the weight at least doubles.

Make a Statement with Unusual Handbags

Some women like to carry a very unique handbag, and there are some very unusual ones to be found. They shop for the type of handbag that will provoke comments from other, usually all in fun.

What Women Carry in Handbags

What things does a woman carry in her purse? Certainly a wallet or some purses that has enough slots to carry all the cards that are necessary in today’s life. That would include a driver’s license, insurance cards for health and auto, ATM card and certainly at least one major credit card, such as a visa. Many women have several credit cards for stores as there are those award points to consider.

The cards do not end there either. What about a library card? A Costco or Sam’s Club card? Business cards? Many grocery stores now issue cards, and then there is Petsmart if you happen to have a pet. Do not forget your cell phone as that is a must.

In addition, other common items are your keys,a date calendar, your check book, a brush or comb, pens, sunglasses, reading glasses, nail file or emery board, compact, lipstick, lip gloss, breath mints, gum, medications, tissues, ear piece for the cell phone and of course there should be some money.

According to a survey in Britain, 43% of woman carry sexy panties in their purse in case they think the date is going well, but 40% of the men said the underwear didn't matter to them.If you have small children there are often more things to carry when leaving the house. Some women carry cameras and emergency rations, such as chocolate!

Summary

Woman have carried purses for well over a century and the trend will certainly continue. There are many styles for everyone's taste. Tote bags, shoulder bags and leather backpacks are popular with college students. Black leather bags or brown leather bags are the most common as they match more outfits.

I plan on shopping for my new handbag soon. After three years on Hubpages and writing hundreds of articles. I think a celebration is in order!

Wow, I had no idea so many women were walking around with a spare pair of panties in their purse. I sometimes carry a spare pair of socks just in case the opportunity to go bowling on at date should arise. I guess we all have different ideas of a fun date. :-)

    Interesting hub and voted up!

LOL Enjoy your new purse. As for me, I'm an oddity. I detest purses and the need to carry them. For many years I traveled like a guy--if it didn't fit in my pockets, it stayed home.

Since I don't "do" dresses, and I'm a jeans-kind-of-gal, I always have pockets. I had a purse stolen in 2007, so now, those few things I must carry go in a hiker's fanny pack that stays attached around my waist. Hands free all the way for me, baby!

(Do you think I'm in danger of having my 'woman card' revoked?)

Congrats on three years very nice and you have been doing a good job.

I was just thinking yesterday how women never forget their purses. They carry them no matter what is going on. I love purses but I have gotten to a point where I can't carry big sizes anymore. I always carry toothpicks and hand sanitizer in my purse. Voted up.

Congratulations, Pamela~ What a great milestone...I love the puppy purses too but afraid my brats would eat them...although I have been looking into designing a backpack myself for them and hoping I can get them to leave that alone. I definitely wouldn't call that a puppy PURSE but if it helps on hikes to keep them focused or 'working'- better for all!

I've about given up on purses as mine tend to turn into suitcases since I have to bring my latest hardback book, my netbook, dog leashes, treats, pinch collars, etc., etc., etc. I found that they were killing my shoulder (gosh I have no idea why~~)--I even tried the backpack kind and that hurt my back. So now I usually bring my big all purpose bag with all the above-mentioned "tools of the trade" and just opt to carry my wallet into places with me along with keys. It has saved my back and my shoulder--and probably loads of money~

Again--congrats and good to see you are still writing!

I have so many handbags. Of all the clothing and accessories that women have I think that panties and handbags are what I can't resist. They top shoes and I do love shoes. I love my handbags big as well since I want to be able to carry my 'emergency' items in there...lol

Happy third anniversary. Sorry I haven't been visiting much, it's just a rough time for me right now. But I hope that soon I will be able to get beck to my usual reading and catching up.

$30,000 for a Hermes Birkin is not a lot. I spent $70,000 on the Croc Skin Hermes Birkin which is a lot higher-status than the one you mentioned. It's not absurd at all, if you've got that much money; there's not many things you can't afford so you can do what you want....
