My Essential Oil Journey - The Beginning
Essential Oils Found in Herbs of All Kinds
My Essential Oil Journey - The Beginning
I first really became exposed to essential oils many years ago, though I have been enjoying them for some time and didn't realize it or think about it much. As far as the bigger companies like Doterra and Young Living, however, it was just a few years back that I saw my sisters in law really introduce them to our family. I was a bit skeptical, to say the least, and still am to some degree.
Let me back up for just a moment and say that I love herbs, nature and the great outdoors so much. I have always been sensitive to the value of being in the great outdoors and taking in all of the aromas in a given area. For example, growing up in Southern California, I always loved smelling beautiful eucalyptus trees while walking through a grove of them or smelling the herbs like anise or lavender while walking along an ocean garden path. I can distinctly recall experiencing the strong scent of cedarwood when opening a hope chest, etc. You probably get an idea of where I am going. I don't believe it is just a random coincidence that we love the scents that come from nature and into our lives. My somewhat recent discovery of essential oils in bottle form seems like a natural thing, all things considered. I will touch more on all of this later. Let me jump in for now on this particular leg of the essential oil journey, and I am excited!

First Experiences with Fragrance Oils
As a lover of candles and home fragrance, I recall coming across certain blends within candles for aromatherapy use. On top of this, you could find all sorts of items within bath products like bath salts, bombs, and gels. It really wasn't all that different from using a product like Mentholatum for a chest cold, or like a Vick's Vapor Rub. Do you recall the scented potpourri that was so popular and still sometimes is? I remember buying a little bottle of cinnamon oil to freshen up some potpourri I purchased from a store at Christmas time one year. We just love these scents in our lives. Jump from there to oils found at Yankee Candle that could be put into a warmer and diffused. These were different from diffusing the higher grade of essential oils people are diffusing so often now.
So what seems new, really has been around for a very long time. Going back even further, it makes perfect sense that people have been using oils for millennia. Throughout history, one could find oils being used for a number of uses.
I am a huge fan of sensory and herb gardens as well. Ever since someone suggested touching the leaves of an herb to then smell the oils, I was hooked. There is power in these wonderful plants. My once vegetable garden that we seemed to deplete the nutrients out of, is now an herb garden. Herbs are simply amazing plants that don't seem to need a whole lot of attention. The point I am trying to make is that it seems very natural for someone like me to eventually get on the essential oils "bandwagon" even though I somewhat resisted it for a while.
Skin Cancer Surgery, Healing and My First Real Essential Oil
A few years ago I was in need of a Moh's surgery to deal with a basal cell skin cancer that turned out to need four different cuts very near my upper lip. It was right on the lip line, under my nose. I was so saddened about this. The skin cancer had migrated some as well as the doctor was making her cuts. She stayed late with me as got every last bit of cancer. Then it was time to heal. What an ordeal. It was my one sister in law that was hearing of my story and wanted to share her oils with me. She gave me a small bottle of frankincense oil to use on my lip to aid in the healing process. I didn't know what to do with it. You can see this little bottle in the picture I share of my first oils.
Frankincense is not cheap but she really wanted me to try this out to aid in my healing. I thought this was so kind of her. I wish I had used it more regularly at the time, but am now finishing up that tiny little sample to make the most of that very precious oil. Now I am realizing just how special it is. Another friend of mine also talked about essential oils and different skin problems.
I don't claim to have any kinds of oils really help with skin problems or any health problems. I know one needs to be very careful and I am just learning as I go. Bottom line, these essential oils of the very highest quality might just be a helpful thing in our lives. If nothing else, a level of pleasure through calming or uplifting with some nice scents. Not too different from what I experienced in garden areas and tree groves, or along the coast from when I was younger. I am thrilled to be at the very least, learning more about the plants, trees, resins, and shrubs that bring us these lovely bottles of precious oils.

Moving Forward on my Essential Oil Journey
Please make sure to check back as I share some of my newest essential oils that I am trying out from different companies. I am trying out Young Living in particular but others as well. Some of the others I have some exposure to and thoughts about include Doterra, Nature's Truth, Aura Cacia, and more. Florihana is another company that I have heard many great things about and can't wait to look into more. Florihana is based out of France I believe, and I love their little storage containers I have seen that keep the oils in a darker casing, ongoing. I love the quick and easy accessibility of some oils in local pharmacies and health food stores as well.
I would be curious anyone's thoughts on oils as I move through this essential oils journey. I love that there is so much to learn about. It is amazing what I have already learned!
