Everyone loves being outside especially in the summer. When spring gets here especially where I live in Central Florida everyone heads to the beach for some fun in the sun. Warm sunny days brings about all sorts of outdoor activities, but with these activities everyone needs to be prepared to protect there bodies from the Ultraviolet Radiation (UV)) rays that the sun puts off. These UV rays are something that feels good but can be really unhealthy for our skin.

The sun makes us feel and look good, but over time and to much exposure to the suns rays will cause damage to our skin. The UV rays causes the damages to the fibers in our skin called elastin. When these fibers get damaged it causes the skin to look older and can cause the skin to sag and become weak. This is a slow process, so when we are young we don't see this happening, but as we age it becomes more noticeable.

Natural ways to protect your skin from radiation

Protecting your skin from the harmful UV rays from the sun is very important. Many people reach for a can or bottle of sunscreen or sun block to keep themselves from getting sunburnt. Sunscreen and sunblock is made from man made checmicals and is absorbed into the body through the skin, we take in to many chemicals daily so why add more harmful chemicals if we do not need too.

Sunscreens and sun blocks can cause major irritation to the skin, or it can cause itchy dry patches which is a side effect to using these products. If you are one that gets rashes or dry patches from using sunscreen you should seek out advice from a dermatologist. Also If you are one of these people that have side affects from sunscreen you should look at more natural solutions to protecting your skin from the sun.

Protect yourself with clothing

One of the most easiest ways to protect your body from the sun is by wearing clothing. I do a lot of fishing and swimming in the Gulf of Mexico and I have light colored skin and hair and blue eyes, so I burn in the matter of minute's when I am out on the water. I do not like having sunscreen or block on my body for many reasons, so I wear protective clothing when I am out on or in the water. Since I live in the Florida, the sunshine state I spend all my free time being on or in the water.

Last year I came across a line of clothing that is very light weight and it blocks the UV rays like wearing sunblock. During scalloping season we basically live on the water, and we are exposed to many long hours in the sun. After finding this line of clothing I was very skeptical what the label stated about blocking the UV rays. I had nothing to lose so I purchased one of these shirts and after spending ten straight hours in the sun with no sunblock on just wearing this shirt I have to admit I did not have any sunburn where my skin was covered by this shirt.

My experiences of just wearing plain clothes that did not advertise offering UV protection did not work that well for me. I myself only wear clothing when I am on or in the water that says on the label UV blocking protection,

Homemade All Natural Sunscreen

Many of us today are lacking Vitamin D in our bodies one of the better things we get from the sun. Being deficient of Vitamin D can be harmful to the body, it has been said that a person that is lacking vitamin d can lead into certain types of cancer. Also a body that is deficient in Vitamin D has been linked to problems during pregnancy such as pre-eclampsia and pre-mature labor.

In today's society and the fears running rampant about skin cancer and over exposure to the sun many people are avoiding the sun altogether. This is not the correct way to avoiding skin cancer.

I myself even though I work in a office environment I try to get outside a couple three times a day to soak in some rays from the sun. My body chemistry of being fair skin, blonde hair and blue eyes I tend to burn easy with to much sun. I let my body get just enough sun so I do not burn and cause damage to my skin.

If I know that I am going to spend a great deal of time in the sun, such as when I am out on the water I make sure I dress for the occasion. If I am going to not get wet I may apply a simple coat of all natural sunscreen to the bare areas of the body that will be exposed to the sun for long periods.

Here is a list of foods that have natural SPF ingredients:

  • Coconut oil
  • Carrot seed oil
  • Shea butter
  • Almond oil
  • Zinc oxide
  • Red raspberry seed oil
  • Beeswax
  • Vitamin D oil

Just a side note, before you try anything on your skin you should check with your dermatologist to make sure it is safe for you. Even though these ingredient's are all natural it is always best to side with caution when applying new things to your body.

Recipe for Natural Sunscreen

This is a very simple recipe for making an all natural sunscreen. One does not have to be a chemist to make this recipe, all it takes is throw some stuff in a pot and heat it and let it cool down, how simple is that.


-¼ cup shea butter
-2 tbsp. zinc oxide powder
-¼ cup coconut oil
-¼ cup cosmetic-grade beeswax granules
-20 drops carrot seed oil
-1 tsp. raspberry seed oil
-1 tsp. vanilla extract
-1 tsp. vitamin E oil

Mixing Instructions

  1. Combine shea butter, coconut oil and beeswax in a large jar something like a canning jar.
    2. Place the jar into a saucepan of water and heat on a low setting. You will want to do this on low so it does not get overheated and crack the jar.
    3. Once the ingredients have melted, remove from the heat and leave to cool for awhile so it is easier to handle.
    4. Stir in the zinc oxide powder. Be careful not to inhale it since it can be toxic when inhaled. I highly recommend wearing a face mask when handling this item.
    5. Place the mixture in fridge to cool for about thirty minuets.
    6. Add oils and extracts.
    7. Thoroughly mix all ingredients so everything is mixed together in order to get the most benefit from all the ingredients.
    8. Put it into a small container or squeeze tube to take with you out in the sun.

    This is just one of many different recipes for all natural sunscreen. I find this one to be the easiest to make and does not take a lot of special ingredient's to put this sunscreen together.

    The one thing to remember with all sunscreen, natural or manmade, make sure you apply it every hour or two and if you get wet or sweat a lot like I do you will need to apply it more often. The beeswax does help the sunscreen to stay on the skin but it is always to best to apply more if you feel you need too.

      I have had real bad sunburn twice in my life. Once when I was in third grade my sister needed a time away from our home so that renovations to the house could be done for her very severe allergies. Dad stayed back to do the work to the house, (rip up carpet etc.) I went to Florida with the rest of the family. I remember the horrible pain that was to me. I was so young yet I remember it as though it was yesterday. The second time I burned I had put on sunblock but evidently not the kind that doesn't wash off. I am shy in the water and for the first time I was jumping waves (allowing the water to lift me up and put me down). I not only burned that time but I had sun poisoning. Now I don't go into the sun at all. I guess that's why I have to take Vitamin D supplements. I guess I'm more of a woods guy than a beach person water guy.
