Natural care of dry skin

Updated on April 16, 2011

Dry skin problem can be uncomfortable and even maddening. Your skin might feel tight and painful; it might look dull or red or flaky. People of dry skin are classified into 3 categories;

1- Ordinary dry skin, which isn't a serious problem, but it can be uncomfortable and even madding and doesn't look nice, where plump cells change into shriveled ones creating fine lines and wrinkles.

2- Serious dry skin conditions, can sometimes be disfiguring, causing bad psychological effect. Most dry skin results from environmental factors especially in the periods between seasons. Exposure to hot or cold weather with low humidity levels and excessive bathing leads to the bad effect of dry skin.

3- Chronic or severe dry skin problems, and this may require a dermatologist's evaluation. But you can still do a lot on your own to improve your skin first. Here I'll give you some tips that might help you reducing the problem of having dry skin on your body and face.

How to reduce dryness of your skin?

Normal, healthy skin is coated in a thin layer of natural lipids which keep in moisture, leaving your skin soft and moistened.

To avoid losing part of these natural lipids or fats you should

1-stop using harsh soap.

2- avoid long hot showers.

3- stop using itchy cloths.

4- use suitable moisturizers.

How to clean your dry face or body

- Don't use any harsh soap or hot water on your face. Use a gentle cleanser or cleaning gel with moisturizer.

- Moisturize while your skin is moist. After washing your face or body, leave it damp. Apply moisturizer within 2-5 minutes of washing to lock moisture in your skin. You can read more about skin treatment in this hub page.

- Apply sunscreen to areas of your body that are exposed to sun.

- When you buy moisturizers for dry skin, you mustn't pay a lot, all you need is to read the label. Ingredients that may be helpful for dry skin are

  • Ceramides and Hyaluronic acid, which help skin to hold water content.
  • Lanolin, mineral oil, and petroleum jelly. Which keep water which has been absorbed during bathing.
  • Dimethicone and glycerin. They draw water from surrounding to skin and retain it there.

Thank you Cloverleaf, I know how much it hurts, my skin becomes very dry especially on changing weather. Now I can treat it but when I was young I sometimes had my lips bleeding and my face itching. Now I manage it before it goes that bad. Thanks again for reading my hub:)

I live in a climate with very low humidity, so my skin always feels so dry! Thanks for the great tips, I think I am going to get some almond oil and try your banana and almond sounds so soothing (and good enough to eat!).

Yes I know beauty products are expensive, we can use things from kitchen and get the same results, and really avocado, honey and almond oil are like magic. You can alsom mix honey with queen bee honey in 25:1 ratio, this will give you very bright healthy skin when you use on face ;)

I love this! So much cheaper than what I use! I go to Clinique and buy all of my make up and beauty products to keep my face clean and hydrated. They work really well, though, it's just extremely expensive. When I bought all my make up, facial cleansers, and moisturizers, my bill was nearly $400.. I did buy a lot, but the average cost of one product was $30
