My experience with the Neutrogena Blackhead Eliminating Daily Scrub

This is a review of the above product, now from the title we can clearly see that this product is designed to remove those stubborn little blackheads from the facial skin. Unfortunately my experience is not a great one but please take the time to read on as there are some good positive points to this product as well as the negative ones.

So what causes the blackheads ?

It is always good to get to know our enemy so we can have a clearer idea on how to fight it. Blackheads are caused by the pores in our skin becoming clogged with excess sebum and dead skin cells. The sebum [which is our skins natural hydrator] surfaces from the skin every so often, this then becomes exposed to air which then a process called oxidization occurs, when this happens then exposed sebum turns to the black color we know as the dreaded blackhead.

How the product is supposed to work

This product first of all alike many has certain ingredients that help open up the pores in our skin, these are normally some types of menthol ingredients, this is also the ingredient that makes our face feel energized and also fresh.

It is an important process as without the pores being open we would not be able to gain access to the blackhead. Among other ingredients this product does also contain large exfoliating beads [you might be able to see these beads in the picture as small orange dots].

This is a different step from Neutrogena as many products contain extremely small exfoliating substances instead of larger ones, I suppose different skin types complement different ingredients.

The beads are used to literally enter the pore and scoop the blackhead out, whilst at the same time removing all that sebum and dead skin cells from the pore.

The results I found

Please remember these are the results that I have found and each person will vary in results. I have found that the product does a very POOR [get it ;)] job at removing STUBBORN blackheads, however it does a very pleasing job at making your skin feel and look clean.

The product leaves your skin with a matte non shiny finish which is what the majority of us want as an end result from a facial cleaner. However we must remember that this product boasts the fact that it is designed to remove blackheads, I have found little evidence of this product actually doing just that.

I have to mention however that I have some very stubborn ones in the nose area and have came to the conclusion that only a lancet will work.

Ways you can optimize the results

The most important thing to remember about removing blackheads is that those pores hanging on to the dreaded black dot for dear life has to let go of it before we can actually extract it.

A few good ways to really help open the pores in your skin are as follows:

  • Take a steam facial
  • Take a warm to hot flannel and place it over your face until the temperature of the flannel starts to drop
  • Take a hot steam shower

There is also a way to optimize the actual product, I have found that by actually adding some table salt to the product, helps to add to the exfoliating process, however, this can hurt the skin so please do not try this if you have sensitive skin as this may leave your skin sore and uncomfortable.

Does this product cause discomfort ?

Obviously the answer to this question vastly depends on your skin type. I personally have medium sensitivity skin, when using the product I can certainly feel the beads scratching against the face, however the feeling barley registers on the uncomfortable scale. As soon as you wash this product off I'm sure you wont be left with any irritability.

Is the product worth the money ?

I personally believe that even though the product has not helped me in the fight against blackheads, it certainly outperforms in the cleansing category, because of this I would still be happy to buy it again for just that reason.

If you solely want to buy this product for removing blackheads and have had no luck with other products like myself, I would suggest you getting a lancet, you can purchase these from many online stores like amazon and also from beauty shops.
