Nioxin...Does it Really Work?

Updated on May 2, 2013

My husband began to notice his hair thinning a few years ago and freaked out. His father and grandfather are both bald on top and he refused to look the same. Slowly his hair became thinner and he began finding hair lying on the bathroom counter. The hunt was on! He searched the internet for solutions and came across various treatments. Together we explored almost all of the available options such as, Hair Club for Men, Rogain, Propecia, hair transplants you name it. Below I will go into further detail about what we found out about treatments, the costs & the effectiveness.

What happened at Hair Club for Men?

Our visit.

My husband and I visited Hair Club for Men for a free consultaion, they had an office close by and we thought what the heck. After the assesment they offered us a package of hair care products to use for X amount of time. While using these products you are to be reassesed peridically where they take photos and what not for your personal file. Then after so much time has passed they give a prescrption for Propecia. I can't remember exactly what the membership cost was but after a student discount and the "if you accept today" discount I believe it was somewhere in the ballpark of $1200.00-$1500.00 plus monthly fees for product. (The cost of Propecia is additional $70.00 per month) My husband was so caught up in the idea of his hair growing back that he accepted. I left with a knot in my stomach....we didn't have that kind of money to spend on hair. I don't doubt that their formula works, I just can't afford it. If you ask me, when you buy the membership you are not only paying for the product, you are also paying for their infomercials and fancy office buildings etc. That's just my opinion. Hair Club for Men also offers other solutions which all depend on your analysis that consists of viewing your scalp under a microscope on a tv monitor.

What is Nioxin?

After returning home with a knot in my stomach I called my mother who I should mention is a licensed cosmetologist to tell her what we had done. She recommended to us NIOXIN. "What is Nioxin?", I asked her. Nioxin is a product used to grow and maintain thinning hair. There are eight different NIOXIN® Scalp and Hair Care Systems designed to help improve the appearance of thinning hair. In order to create and maintain an optimal scalp environment, each System is formulated to achieve maximum results for your specific hair type. Use this link to find your hair type. Nioxin works the same way as Hair Club for Men products. After speaking with my mom, I read the fine print on the contract and found a 3 day return policy. I went to the supply store and bought the Nioxin system and compared the ingredients in both the cleanser, conditioner, folicle booster and the vitamins. Lo and behold they are the same, the treatment regimen...the same. I was so excited to share this news of great savings and full hair to my husband. The next day he returned to Hair Club for Men for a refund.

The Nioxin system consists of 5 major parts, Cleanser, Scalp Therapy, Scalp Treatment, Follicle Booster and Intensive Therapy Recharging Complex (a dietary supplement) In order to see results you must first be patient, I can not say this enough and second YOU MUST USE THIS PRODUCT CONSISTENTLY FOLLOWING ALL DIRECTIONS, if you stop the treatment it will stop working for you. Results may not be noticeable for up to 6 months. This is also about how long it took for my husband to see real results.

To locate a salon near you who carries Nioxin products visit

Propecia, Biotin, Minoxidil

What else works?

PROPECIA - Propecia is prescribed in a 1mg tablet for those seeking hair growth. By simply taking a Procepia pill once a day, you can stimulate hair growth and actually prevent future hair loss. Procepia blocks the creation of DHT in the scalp. In doing so, this prevents the shrinking of hair follicles, which is one of the root causes of hair loss.

WARNING - Women should not conceive while partner is using Propecia because of possible birth defects. Women who are pregnant should not handle or consume Propecia. Propecia should not be absorbed through the skin of a woman who is or may become pregnant. (Propecia 1mg and Proscar 5mg, Merck) would cause considerable anxiety and concern. The package insert for Proscar states under the section on Contraindications: "Because of the ability of Type II 5alpha reductase inhibitors to inhibit the conversion of testosterone to DHT, finasteride may cause abnormalities of the external genitalia of a male fetus of a pregnant woman who receives finasteride". The specific birth defect they're referring to, which happens when there is no Type II 5-alpha reductase enzyme in the male embryo, is called hypospadias. Hypospadias is a birth defect in which the urinary tract opening is developed on the ventral surface (under side) of the penis rather than at the tip of the penis. There have never been congenital abnormalities observed in female fetuses at any dosage of finasteride.

Propecia cost with my insurance was $70.00 for a 30 day supply

The US now has a generic form of 1mg Propecia, Finasteride is the name.

BIOTINE - Biotin supplements are often recommended as a natural product to counteract the problem of hair loss in both children and adults. The signs and symptoms of biotin deficiency include hair loss which progresses in severity to include loss of eye lashes and eye brows in severely deficient subjects. Some shampoos are available that contain biotin, but it is doubtful whether they would have any useful effect, as biotin is not absorbed well through the skin.

Biotin can be purchased at GNC & other supplement suppliers

MINOXIDIL - (trade names Rogaine and Regaine) is a vasodilator medication known for its ability to slow or stop hair loss and promote hair regrowth. It is available over the counter for treatment of androgenic alopecia, among other baldness treatments, but measurable changes disappear within months after discontinuation of treatment.

Nioxin Reviews

What others have to say about Nioxin

I have been using nioxin for 3 yrs. My hair stopped falling out 1 week after my first use...three yrs later and my hair looks great!!! I would recommend the starter kid to see if one has a bad reaction to this product.

Really, I must admit, one of my best friends recommended Nioxin. My hair started to slowly go when I was just 16 and by the time I was 30, I had probably lost about a 3rd. I usedd Nioxin (shampoo and the #2??) anyway, those are the only products from them I have ever used. At the time, I thought I saw a change (new hairs growing) but was in the middle of a divorce and stopped. Years later, which was a few months ago, I asked her to get it for me again. Three months into it, I can't believe the difference... I'm seeing lots of new hair growing and here I am writing in this website. It really seems to work so far. I plan to keep using both products. I don't know how much new hair it will keep growing, but it seems to work. I may consider buying Minoxidil to aid it even more. Thanks for listening and I sure recommend trying it.

This stuff is great, I've been using the #2, after one week my hair quit falling out, i used to have to clean the hair out of the drain every other shower, now, I haven't had to do it in 3 weeks! This stuff is genuine, but may not work for all people, it's worth giving it a try though.

If anyone is considering using Nioxin, do it! And give it a chance to work. It may take 3-6 months for it to work although some people see results in 2 weeks. You might notice more hairloss for a little while but that is because it is cleansing the blocked follicles that are making your hair fall out in the first place. Those hairs that you lost are basically just held in by excessive build up. that is why you will lose hair before it gets better. Deffinatly give it a chance!

What Happened at Vanscoy Hair Clinic?

Our Visit.

Today we had an appointment at Vanscoy Hair Clinic, Pai Medical Group. We went back into an office where my husbands hair was assessed as it had been at Hair Club For Men. The man we had the consultation with was very knowledgeable and explained everything very well. We are not new to this so we already pretty much knew everything he was telling us. Our real reason for the visit was to once again see our options and find out the cost of them. My husband has been using Nioxin for about 4 years now and it has defiantly done its job. My husband really wants his hairline back which is only possible through hair transplant surgery and we know that. The cost for his surgery in its early thinning receded stage at Vanscoy Hair Clinic would be $6,000.00. This is not a realistic option for us at this time. He explained to us that by using Propecia and a Hair Max Comb Laser that my husband could "freeze his hair in time". What he was saying is that if you take Propecia daily and use the comb lazer 3 times a week that you would not loose anymore hair. Propecia will take 3 months to take effect in your system and will help with the crown and top of head but not the sides and front. Propecia blocks the formation of DHT in your scalp and can result in regrowth of hair or no further hairloss, both of which are good things. Blood is the only source of nutrients a hair is getting so that is where the comb lazer comes into play. A comb laser stimulates blood flood to the scalp and cell growth and has proven to be effective. My husband purchased a hair laser on eBay. The Hair Max Comb Laser is the only FDA approved laser, Vanscoy Hair Clinic sells them for $545.00. No thanks, the only difference between the Hair Max Comb Laser and other lasers out there is the approval. Vanscoy Hair Clinic said the Hair Max beeps every 4 seconds telling you to move it forward 1.5 inches until you have covered your whole head, doing this three times a week. The instructions with the one purchased from eBay say to use the laser every other day for 15 minutes at a time. You find the Hair Max Comb Laser and other hair lasers below on eBay. @wreathmaker: Nioxin can be used for women just like men. My aunt is a cancer survivor and her hair never grew in the same after chemo, it is very thin and shows scalp, she is using Nioxin now. Hope that helps :)
