Pajamas: From Utilitarian To Sexy Sleepwear!

Updated on March 20, 2011

There is a wide range of many different styles and types of pajamas which would meet the requirements of virtually anyone. These pajamas types include beautiful and sensual silk teddies for women, all the way to utilitarian, but nice, warm long johns for those frigid nights. Since it is not at all unusual for individuals to have more than just a few sets of pajamas for different uses and temperatures, it becomes obvious that pajamas can make a phenomenal gift for almost anyone. It is important that the gift giver understand the recipient's particular tastes in patterns, fabrics and the other elements of sleepwear.

The Evolution Of Pajamas

The original form of pajamas were drawstring pants that were very loose fitting that were popular in Southeast Asia as every day garments which were generally worn underneath long tunics. That essential design of pajamas was adopted by designers in the Western world, but instead of making it be a form of everyday wear, it became sleepwear. Whenever anyone in the Western world today hears the word pajamas they think of a dual piece set of a top and pants, as that is what has been adopted in this culture.

Men, women and children all have different choices of pajamas available for them. The pajamas for children are generally designed to be extremely practical, durable, soft and comfortable. There is a form of pajamas called footed pajamas, also known as footie pjs; these are pajamas suits that are all one piece. They cover the person right from the neck down to their toes in order to keep them nice and warm on the coldest nights. Over and above the essentially basic pajamas for children, there are also bathrobes for after bathtime or just for relaxing around the house.

Men Have Particular PJ Requirements

Pajamas for men are generally top and bottom sets made from two separate pieces. The range of fabrics which men's pajamas are usually available in include basic, durable cotton, satin, warm flannel and fragile, but luxurious silk. The fabrics that are usually used in men's pajamas are quite soft and the fit of the garment is usually loose. This is important so the pajamas are comfy and the man to wear anywhere around the house as well as while sleeping in bed. For colder climates, very thick terry cloth and flannel pajamas are available, while in the summertime or warmer Southern climates, there are a selection of pajama T's and shorts available on the market.

Maternity PJs Adapt To The Mother's Changing Body

Pregnant women have a large selection of pajamas to choose from that are made specifically for maternity. These pajamas are designed in such a way that they can accommodate the woman's body as it changes during later stages of the pregnancy. Many women may choose more simple fabrics such as flannel, linen, wool, or cotton for their pajama sets. Of course, the sky is the limit in not only style but also expenditure, so there are many very luxurious and expensive silk and satin tops and bottoms for pajamas available. These are designed to be extremely comfortable while sleeping or lounging around the house.

While nightgowns are not technically pajamas in the conventional sense, they are extremely popular in the market of women's sleepwear. There are many different types of sensual pajama sets for the lady who wishes to look alluring or sultry. These various sets of pajamas can be custom tailored so they fit the body and accentuate all the curves or they can also be cut low to emphasize the best features. Lace and silk are commonly used in the production of these sexy pajamas.

The many different patterns make for fun pajamas, therefore, although there are simple geometrics, plain pajamas and stripes available, you can also have pajamas with pictures of almost anything on them: movie stars, dolphins, landscapes or various other images. Many of the more popular companies mix and match their solids with patterns so you can have, for example, striped bottoms and a solid top.

The world of pajamas is varied and wonderful. You certainly don't want to sleep in the buff when you can choose to sleep in comfortable and attractive pajamas.

Aarti's not my cuppa. I like 'em platinum blonde, blue eyed, fair skinned, 4'10" and borderline anorexic... but with enormous tatas! :)

I sleep in the lewd... er... I mean nude... and believe me, it's not a pretty sight. The next door neighbors bought me new bedroom shades... they nailed them to my window from the outside! :)
